TitleDevelopment of a Numerical Simulation Method for Rocky Body Impacts and Theoretical Analysis of Asteroidal Shapes
Author(s)Sugiura, Keisuke
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXIII, 134 p. 57 illus., 55 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes numerical simulations of collisions between asteroids, based on a unique numerical code developed by the author. The code accurately solves the elastic dynamic equations and describes the effects of fracture and friction, which makes it possible to investigate the shapes of impact outcomes produced by asteroid collisions and subsequent gravitational accumulation of fragments. The author parallelizes the code with high parallelization efficiency; accordingly, it can be used to conduct high-resolution simulations with the aid of supercomputers and clarify the shapes of small remnants produced through the catastrophic destruction of asteroids. The author demonstrates that flat asteroids can only be produced by impacts involving objects with similar mass and low velocity, which suggests that the flat asteroids in our solar system were created in the planet formation era and have kept their shapes until today. The author also shows that asteroid collisions under certain conditions can produce the extremely elongated shape of an interstellar minor body, 1I/???Oumuamua. In brief, the book offers a comprehensive investigation of asteroid impacts and shapes, making it a uniquely valuable resource

TitleULF Waves??? Interaction with Cold and Thermal Particles in the Inner Magnetosphere
Author(s)Ren, Jie
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXXI, 106 p. 61 illus., 52 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis focuses on ULF (Ultra-low-frequency) waves' interaction with plasmasphere particles and ring current ions in the inner magnetosphere. It first reports and reveals mutual effect between ULF waves and plasmasphere using Van Allen Probes data. The differences and similarities of different ring current ions interacting with ULF waves are extensively explored using Cluster data, which provides a potential explanation for O+-dominated ring current during the magnetic storms. Furthermore, this thesis finds a method to study the phase relationship between ULF waves and drift-bounce resonant particles, and proposes that the phase relationship can be used to diagnose the parallel structure of standing wave electric field and energy transfer directions between waves and particles. The findings in this thesis can significantly promote our understanding of ULF waves' role in the dynamics of inner magnetosphere

TitleExomoons to Galactic Structure : High Precision Studies with the Microlensing and Transit Methods
Author(s)Awiphan, Supachai
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXXVI, 187 p. 72 illus., 54 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents three major studies covering exomoon and exoplanet detection and characterisation. Firstly, it reports the observations and analysis of the atmosphere of the hot Neptune GJ3470b, one of the lowest-mass planets with a measured atmosphere, using transmission spectroscopy techniques. The result provided improved measurements of Rayleigh scattering in the atmosphere and the first limits on additional planetary companions in the system. The second part discusses modeling a Kepler-like satellite???s ability of a to detect exomoons by looking for transit timing variations and transit duration variations, demonstrating how exomoons can unambiguously be identified from such data.Lastly, the book examines the development of a state-of-the-art Galactic microlensing simulator, which has been made publicly available. It was used to compare with the largest published sample of microlensing events from the MOA-II survey

TitleThe Dynamics of Small Solar System Bodies
Author(s)Wood, Jeremy
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXI, 124 p. 49 illus., 15 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis SpringerBrief summarizes the latest relevant research and discoveries that have been made in the area of ringed small bodies and small body taxonomy, including those that lay the groundwork for future discoveries. Before 2013, ringed small bodies were only theoretical. Thus, there are very limited publications available on this relatively new subfield of astronomy. With the introduction of the GAIA catalogue, star positions are now known better than ever before. Since rings are discovered through the use of starlight occultation, we could very well be looking at an explosion of discoveries of ringed small bodies in the near future. Each chapter is accompanied by exercises, and an end-of-book answer key is provided. As such, this brief will benefit students and researchers alike who wish to have a single document and quick access to the latest information on ringed small bodies and small body taxonomy

TitleExploring the Ocean Worlds of Our Solar System
Author(s)Henin, Bernard
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXXIV, 303 p. 45 illus., 34 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the last 25 years, planetary science experienced a revolution, as vast oceans of liquid water have been discovered within the heart of the icy moons of our Solar System. These subsurface oceans lie hidden under thick layers of ice. We call them ocean worlds. Some of these icy moons, such as Ganymede, may hold two to three times more liquid water than all the water present on Earth, while others, such as Enceladus and Europa, are thought by astrobiologists to be our best hope of finding extraterrestrial life. In this book, we will explore and compare a variety of Solar System ocean worlds, meeting in the process 22 of the most intriguing objects, from the giant asteroid Ceres to the enigmatic, distant Sedna. In doing so, we will also encounter the multiple spacecraft that brought back most of what we know of these worlds (Pioneers, Voyagers, Cassini-Huygens, etc.), as well as the latest scientific research on this new topic. We will also entertain the possibility of life on each of these ocean worlds by assessing their habitability, as ultimately, these ocean worlds might hold the key to answering the fundamental questions in life: How did life appear? Where do we come from? Is there life out there?

PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVII, 609 p. 343 illus., 207 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis second, revised and thoroughly updated edition of the successful textbook by Claus Grupen describes the branch of astrophysics known as astroparticle physics. Using experimental methods known from cosmic ray and particle physics, astroparticle physics investigates processes of highest energies taking place in the universe. The new edition reports on progress made by recent discoveries in gravitational wave astronomy and neutrino astronomy (including all details needed to understand recent discoveries in multi-messenger experiments) and also astrobiology. After a historical introduction to the basics of elementary particles the author describes their interactions and the relevant detection techniques. The main body of the book concerns cosmic rays as well as particle processes in astrophysics and cosmology including the physics of the early universe. The book provides an orientation in the field of astroparticle physics that many beginners might be looking for. It also presents new sections exploring the interface between particle physics and cosmic radiation and illustrates the impact of particle physics discoveries to astroparticle physics. The physics is presented using little mathematics, and the results are illustrated by many diagrams and illustrative scientific cartoons which ease the reading of the book. Closing the gap between expert and popular level, the book is highly recommended for undergraduate students in physics or astronomy. It also includes an extensive glossary and a detailed index

TitleIce Worlds of the Solar System : Their Tortured Landscapes and Biological Potential
Author(s)Carroll, Michael
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXIII, 166 p. 90 illus., 68 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteAlthough there is a chance that certain planets may be habitable for life, the moons of planets might have even more to offer. The ice moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune have taught us important lessons about new volcanic forms???cryovolcanism???and the bizarre landscapes sculpted by those erupting geysers. Glaciers, ice mountains, and vast canyons mold the faces of these worlds of ice and thunder. Yet, many ice moons and dwarf planets, including Ceres and Pluto, are in fact sea worlds, hiding deep oceans beneath their ice crusts. This book explores the frozen worlds beyond Mars, delving into the interior forces of migrating ice diapirs, seafloor volcanism and tidal friction, which help form the landscapes found above and biologically friendly environs buried below. It covers the latest research in the field and includes interviews with today???s foremost authorities, including astrobiologists Chris McKay (NASA Ames), Ralph Lorenz (Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory) and Karl Mitchell (Jet Propulsion Laboratory). Original art by the author enhances the concepts explored in the text, recreating some of the most remarkable landscapes on icy planets and moons

TitleExploring the Architecture of Transiting Exoplanetary Systems with High-Precision Photometry
Author(s)Masuda, Kento
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXIV, 160 p. 52 illus., 36 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis develops and establishes several methods to determine the detailed geometric architecture of transiting exoplanetary systems (planets orbiting around, and periodically passing in front of, stars other than the sun) using high-precision photometric data collected by the Kepler space telescope. It highlights the measurement of stellar obliquity ??? the tilt of the stellar equator with respect to the planetary orbital plane(s) ??? and presents methods for more precise obliquity measurements in individual systems of particular interest, as well as for measurements in systems that have been out of reach of previous methods. Such information is useful for investigating the dynamical evolution of the planetary orbit, which is the key to understanding the diverse architecture of exoplanetary systems. The thesis also demonstrates a wide range of unique applications of high-precision photometric data, which expand the capability of future space-based photometry

TitleThe Three-Body Problem and the Equations of Dynamics : Poincar?????s Foundational Work on Dynamical Systems Theory
Author(s)Poincar??, Henri
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXXII, 248 p. 9 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteHere is an accurate and readable translation of a seminal article by Henri Poincar?? that is a classic in the study of dynamical systems popularly called chaos theory. In an effort to understand the stability of orbits in the solar system, Poincar?? applied a Hamiltonian formulation to the equations of planetary motion and studied these differential equations in the limited case of three bodies to arrive at properties of the equations??? solutions, such as orbital resonances and horseshoe orbits.?? Poincar?? wrote for professional mathematicians and astronomers interested in celestial mechanics and differential equations. Contemporary historians of math or science and researchers in dynamical systems and planetary motion with an interest in the origin or history of their field will find his work fascinating.??
