Title | Holographic Entanglement Entropy |
Author(s) | Rangamani, Mukund;Takayanagi, Tadashi |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | IX, 246 p. 133 illus., 66 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides a comprehensive overview of developments in the field of holographic entanglement entropy. Within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, it is shown how quantum entanglement is computed by the area of certain extremal surfaces. The general lessons one can learn from this connection are drawn out for quantum field theories, many-body physics, and quantum gravity. An overview of the necessary background material is provided together with a flavor of the exciting open questions that are currently being discussed. The book is divided into four main parts. In the first part, the concept of entanglement, and methods for computing it, in quantum field theories is reviewed. In the second part, an overview of the AdS/CFT correspondence is given and the holographic entanglement entropy prescription is explained. In the third part, the time-dependence of entanglement entropy in out-of-equilibrium systems, and applications to many body physics are explored using holographic methods. The last part focuses on the connection between entanglement and geometry. Known constraints on the holographic map, as well as, elaboration of entanglement being a fundamental building block of geometry are explained. The book is a useful resource for researchers and graduate students interested in string theory and holography, condensed matter and quantum information, as it tries to connect these different subjects linked by the common theme of quantum entanglement |

Title | Nonlinear Systems, Vol. 2 : Nonlinear Phenomena in Biology, Optics and Condensed Matter |
Author(s) | Archilla, Juan F. R;Palmero, Faustino;Lemos, M. Carmen;S??nchez-Rey, Bernardo;Casado-Pascual, Jes??s |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XIX, 340 p. 144 illus., 95 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents an overview of the most recent advances in nonlinear science. It provides a unified view of nonlinear properties in many different systems and highlights many?? new developments. While volume 1 concentrates on mathematical theory and computational techniques and challenges, which are essential for the study of nonlinear science, this second volume deals with nonlinear excitations in several fields. These excitations can be localized and transport energy and matter in the form of breathers, solitons, kinks or quodons with very different characteristics, which are discussed in the book. They can also transport electric charge, in which case they are known as polarobreathers or solectrons. Nonlinear excitations can influence function and structure in biology, as for example, protein folding. In crystals and other condensed matter, they can modify transport properties, reaction kinetics and interact with defects. There are also engineering applications in electric lattices, Josephson junction arrays, waveguide arrays, photonic crystals and optical fibers. Nonlinear excitations are inherent to Bose-Einstein Condensates, constituting an excellent benchmark for testing their properties and providing a pathway for future discoveries in fundamental physics.?? |

Title | Statistical Physics : A Prelude and Fugue for Engineers |
Author(s) | Piazza, Roberto |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XV, 453 p. 59 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book, provides a general introduction to the ideas and methods of statistical mechanics with the principal aim of meeting the needs of Master???s students in chemical, mechanical, and materials science engineering. Extensive introductory information is presented on many general physics topics in which students in engineering are inadequately trained, ranging from the Hamiltonian formulation of classical mechanics to basic quantum mechanics, electromagnetic fields in matter, intermolecular forces, and transport phenomena. Since engineers should be able to apply physical concepts, the book also focuses on the practical applications of statistical physics to material science and to cutting-edge technologies, with brief but informative sections on, for example, interfacial properties, disperse systems, nucleation, magnetic materials, superfluidity, and ultralow temperature technologies. The book adopts a graded approach to learning, the opening four basic-level chapters being followed by advanced ???starred??? sections in which special topics are discussed. Its relatively informal style, including the use of musical metaphors to guide the reader through the text, will aid self-learning. |

Title | Beyond Classical Physics |
Author(s) | Cunningham, Mark A |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XXI, 358 p. 157 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This undergraduate textbook discusses the nature of the microscopic universe from a modern perspective, based on Einstein's notions of relativity and Noether's proof of the emergence of conservation laws from symmetries of the equations of motion. These ideas drove the development of the Standard Model of particle physics and string theory. The second half of the book explores various aspects of many-body physics, ranging from chemical systems to plasmas to black holes. Like the previous textbook authored by by Mark Cunningham, Neoclassical Physics, this text uses a guided discovery approach of instruction, highlighting the experimental results that drove development of our modern picture of subatomic physics. Many problems utilize Mathematica software to enable students to explore the meaning of different equations in a graphical manner. Students will gain an appreciation of the current state of physical theory, in preparation for more detailed, advanced study as upperclassmen |

Title | Skyrmions in Condensed Matter |
Author(s) | Han, Jung Hoon |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XV, 177 p. 25 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book summarizes some of the most exciting theoretical developments in the topological phenomena of skyrmions in noncentrosymmetric magnetic systems over recent decades. After presenting pedagogical backgrounds to the Berry phase and homotopy theory, the author systematically discusses skyrmions in the order of their development, from the Ginzburg-Landau theory, CP1 theory, Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert theory, and Monte Carlo numerical approaches. Modern topics, such as the skyrmion-electron interaction, skyrmion-magnon interaction, and various generation mechanisms of the skyrmion are examined with a focus on their general theoretical aspects. The book concludes with a chapter on the skyrmion phenomena in the cold atom context. The topics are presented at a level accessible to beginning graduate students without a substantial background in field theory. The book can also be used as a text for those who wish to engage in the physics of skyrmions in magnetic systems, or as an introduction to the various theoretical methods used in studying current condensed-matter systems |

Title | Guerrilla Science : Survival Strategies of a Cuban Physicist |
Author(s) | Altshuler, Ernesto |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | X, 147 p. 71 illus., 50 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Full of drama, dedication, and humor, this book narrates the author???s often frustrating experiences working as an experimental physicist in Cuba after the disintegration of the so-called socialist block. Lacking finance and infrastructure, faced with makeshift equipment, unpredictable supplies, and unreliable IT, Altshuler tells how he and his students overcame numerous challenges to make novel and interesting contributions to several fields of science. Along the way, he explains the science - from studies of ant colonies to superconductivity - either qualitatively or quantitatively, but always at a level fully understandable to an undergraduate student of natural sciences or engineering. An even wider audience, however, may skip the technical sections without missing the essence. With numerous anecdotes, photographs and the author???s own delightful cartoons, the book tells a remarkable, and often amusing story of how successful science can be performed against all odds |

Title | Nanoscale AFM and TEM Observations of Elementary Dislocation Mechanisms |
Author(s) | Vesel??, Jozef |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XIV, 100 p. 86 illus., 21 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis addresses elementary dislocation processes occurring in single-crystalline alloys based on Fe-Al, and investigates correspondences between dislocation distribution inside crystals characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and surface patterns observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fe-Al alloys with different degrees of ordering were prepared and deformed in compression at ambient temperature in-situ inside the AFM device. The evolution of slip line structures was captured in the sequences of AFM images and wavy slip bands, while cross slip at the tip of the slip band and homogeneous fine slip lines were also identified. Further, the thesis develops a technique for constructing 3D representations of dislocations observed by TEM without the prohibitive difficulties of tomography, and creates 3D models of dislocation structures. Generally speaking, the thesis finds good agreement between AFM and TEM observations, confirming the value of AFM as a relevant tool for studying dislocations |

Title | Advanced Quantum Mechanics : Materials and Photons |
Author(s) | Dick, Rainer |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | XXI, 811 p. 64 illus., 42 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This textbook, now in an expanded third edition, emphasizes the importance of advanced quantum mechanics for materials science and all experimental techniques which employ photon absorption, emission, or scattering. Important aspects of introductory quantum mechanics are covered in the first seven chapters to make the subject self-contained and accessible for a wide audience. Advanced Quantum Mechanics: Materials and Photons can therefore be used for advanced undergraduate courses and introductory graduate courses which are targeted towards students with diverse academic backgrounds from the Natural Sciences or Engineering. To enhance this inclusive aspect of making the subject as accessible as possible, introductions to Lagrangian mechanics and the covariant formulation of electrodynamics are provided in appendices. This third edition includes 60 new exercises, new and improved illustrations, and new material on interpretations of quantum mechanics. Other special features include an introduction to Lagrangian field theory and an integrated discussion of transition amplitudes with discrete or continuous initial or final states. Once students have acquired an understanding of basic quantum mechanics and classical field theory, canonical field quantization is easy. Furthermore, the integrated discussion of transition amplitudes naturally leads to the notions of transition probabilities, decay rates, absorption cross sections and scattering cross sections, which are important for all experimental techniques that use photon probes |

Title | Avalanches in Functional Materials and Geophysics |
Author(s) | Salje, Ekhard K.H;Saxena, Avadh;Planes, Antoni |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XVII, 298 p. 171 illus., 80 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides the state-of-the art of the present understanding of avalanche phenomena in both functional materials and geophysics. The main emphasis of the book is analyzing these apparently different problems within the common perspective of out-of-equilibrium phenomena displaying spatial and temporal complexity that occur in a broad range of scales. Many systems, when subjected to an external force, respond intermittently in the form of avalanches that often span over a wide range of sizes, energies and durations. This is often related to a class of critical behavior characterized by the absence of characteristic scales. Typical examples are magnetization processes, plastic deformation and failure occuring in functional materials. These phenomena share many similarities with seismicity arising from the earth crust failure due to stresses that originate from plate tectonics |

Title | Transport and Turbulence in Quasi-Uniform and Versatile Bose-Einstein Condensates |
Author(s) | Guillaume, Gauthier |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | XX, 177 p. 70 illus., 68 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Advancing the experimental study of superfluids relies on increasingly sophisticated techniques. This work develops and demonstrates the loading of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) into nearly arbitrary trapping potentials, with a resolution improved by a factor of seven when compared to reported systems. These advanced control techniques have now been adopted by several cold atoms labs around the world. The book describes how this BEC system was used to study 2D superfluid dynamic. In particular, negative temperature vortex states in a two-dimensional quantum fluid were observed. These states were first predicted by Lars Onsager 70 years ago and have significance to 2D turbulence in quantum and classical fluids, long-range interacting systems, and defect dynamics in high-energy physics. These experiments have established dilute-gas BECs as the prototypical system for the experimental study of point vortices and their nonequilibrium dynamics. Also presented is a new approach to superfluid circuitry based on classical acoustic circuits, whose conceptual and quantitative superiority over previous lumped-element models is demonstrated. This approach has established foundational principles of superfluid circuitry that will impact the design of future transport experiments and new generation quantum devices, such as atomtronics circuits and superfluid sensors |
