Title | Semiconductor Physics : An Introduction |
Author(s) | Seeger, Karlheinz |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XIV, 504 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Televisions, telephones, watches, calculators, robots, airplanes and space vehicles all depend on silicon chips. Life as we know it would hardly be possible without semiconductor devices. An understanding of how these devices work requires a detailed knowledge of the physics of semiconductors, including charge transport and the emission and absorption of electromagnetic waves. This book may serve both as a university textbook and as a reference for research and microelectronics engineering. Each section of the book begins with a description of an experiment. The theory is then developed as far as necessary to understand the experimental results. Everyone with high-school mathematics should be able to follow the calculations. The band structure calculations for the diamond and zinc blende types of lattice are supplemented with a personal computer program. Semiconductor physics developed most rapidly in the two decades following the invention of the transistor, and naturally most of the references date from this time. But recent developments such as the Gunn effect, the acoustoelectric effect, superlattices, quantum well structures, and the quantum Hall effect are also discussed. The exercises provided (answers to which are available) will greatly assist the student in consolidating the material presented. From the reviews:"This book is a must for any theoretical and experimental physicist working in the area of semiconductor physics." #Physicalia#1 |

Title | Computational Electromagnetics and Its Applications |
Author(s) | Campbell, Thomas G;Nicolaides, Roy A;Salas, Manuel D |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997. |
Description | VIII, 320 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the proceedings of the first ICASE/LaRC Work?? shop on Computational Electromagnetics and Its Applications conducted by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering and NASA Langley Research Center. We had several goals in mind when we decided, jointly with the Elec?? tromagnetics Research Branch, to organize this workshop on Computa?? tional Electromagnetics ( CEM). Among our goals were a desire to obtain an overview of the current state of CEM, covering both algorithms and ap?? plications and their effect on NASA's activities in this area. In addition, we wanted to provide an attractive setting for computational scientists with expertise in other fields, especially computational fluid dynamics (CFD), to observe the algorithms and tools of CEM at work. Our expectation was that scientists from both fields would discover mutually beneficial inter?? connections and relationships. Another goal was to learn of progress in solution algorithms for electromagnetic optimization and design problems; such problems make extensive use of field solvers and computational effi?? ciency is at a premium. To achieve these goals we assembled the renowned group of speakers from academia and industry whose talks are contained in this volume. The papers are printed in the same order in which the talks were pre?? sented at the meeting. The first paper is an overview of work currently being performed in the Electromagnetic Research Branch at the Langley Research Center |

Title | Radio Techniques for Probing the Terrestrial Ionosphere |
Author(s) | Hunsucker, Robert D |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XIV, 293 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the years since the pioneering efforts of Sir Edward Appleton, M. A. F. Barnett, G. Breit, and M. A. Thve, many radio techniques have been employed to investigate the terrestrial ionosphere. The purposes of this book are to exam?? ine the basic physical interaction process of radio waves with the ionosphere, scrutinize each of the radio techniques currently in use, and describe the elements of each technique, as well as assess their capabilities and limitations. I have included some of the history of each technique, since we often tend to forget the efforts of the "pioneers". The interaction of radio waves with the terrestrial ionosphere has been described in considerable detail in several "classic" treatments, e.g., Ratcliffe (1959), Al'pert (1963), Budden (1961) and Davies (1965), Rishbeth and e.g., Flock (1979), Davies Garriott (1969), and in other more recent books, (1990), Hargreaves (1979), and Budden (1985). A few of the radio techniques have been described by Hargreaves (1979) and a book by Giraud and Petit (1978) has also included discussion of several of the techniques. The "WITS" handbook No. 2 (1989) also contains description of several radio techniques |

Title | Silicon-Based Millimeter-Wave Devices |
Author(s) | Luy, Johann-Friedrich;Russer, Peter |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994. |
Description | XVI, 343 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Silicon-Based Millimeter-Wave Devices describes field-theoretical methods for the design and analysis of planar waveguide structures and antennas. The principles and limitations of transit-time devices with different injection mechanisms are discussed, as are aspects of fabrication and characterization. The physical properties of silicon Schottky contacts and diodes are treated in a separate chapter. Two chapters cover the silicon/germanium devices: physics and RF properties of the heterobipolar transistor and quantum effect devices such as the resonant tunneling element are described. The integration of devices in monolithic circuits is explained and advanced technologies are presented along with the self-mixing oscillator operation. Finally sensor and system applications are considered |

Title | Fundamentals of Semiconductor : Physics and Materials Properties |
Author(s) | YU, Peter;Cardona, Manuel |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1996. |
Description | XIV, 617 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Fundamentals of Semiconductors attempts to fill the gap between a general solid-state physics textbook and research articles by providing detailed explanations of the electronic, vibrational, transport, and optical properties of semiconductors. The approach is physical and intuitive rather than formal and pedantic. Theories are presented to explain experimental results. This textbook has been written with both students and researchers in mind. Its emphasis is on understanding the physical properties of Si and similar tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors. The explanations are based on physical insights. Each chapter is enriched by an extensive collection of tables of material parameters, figures and problems. Many of these problems 'lead the student by the hand' to arrive at the results |

Title | Electron Transport in Compound Semiconductors |
Author(s) | Nag, B.R |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1980. |
Description | XVI, 464 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Discovery of new transport phenomena and invention of electron devices through exploitation of these phenomena have caused a great deal of interest in the properties of compound semiconductors in recent years. Extensive re?? search has been devoted to the accumulation of experimental results, par?? ticularly about the artificially synthesised compounds. Significant ad?? vances have also been made in the improvement of the related theory so that the values of the various transport coefficients may be calculated with suf?? ficient accuracy by taking into account all the complexities of energy band structure and electron scattering mechanisms. Knowledge about these deve?? lopments may, however, be gathered only from original research contributions, scattered in scientific journals and conference proceedings. Review articles have been published from time to time, but they deal with one particular material or a particular phenomenon and are written at an advanced level. Available text books on semiconductor physics, do not cover the subject in any detail since many of them were written decades ago. There is, there?? fore, a definite need for a book, giving a comprehensive account of electron transport in compound semiconductors and covering the introductory material as well as the current work. The present book is an attempt to fill this gap in the literature. The first chapter briefly reviews the history of the developement of compound semiconductors and their applications. It is also an introduction to the contents of the book |

Title | Electron-Electron Correlation Effects in Low-Dimensional Conductors and Superconductors |
Author(s) | Ovchinnikov, Alexandr A;Ukrainskii, Ivan I |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | IX, 161 p. 4 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Advances in the physics and chemistry of low-dimensional systems have been really magnificent in the last few decades. Hundreds of quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional systems have been synthesized and studied. The most popular representatives of quasi-one-dimensional materials are polyacethylenes CH [1] and conducting donor-acceptor molecular crystals TIF?? z TCNQ. Examples of quasi-two-dimensional systems are high temperature su?? perconductors (HTSC) based on copper oxides LA2CU04, YBa2Cu306+y and organic superconductors based on BEDT -TIP molecules. The properties of such one- and two-dimensional materials are not yet fully understood. On the one hand, the equations of motion of one-dimensional sys?? tems are rather simple, which facilitates rigorous solutions of model problems. On the other hand, manifestations of various interactions in one-dimensional systems are rather peculiar. This refers, in particular, to electron--electron and electron-phonon interactions. Even within the limit of a weak coupling con?? stant electron--electron correlations produce an energy gap in the spectrum of one-dimensional metals implying a Mott transition from metal to semiconductor state. In all these cases perturbation theory is inapplicable. Which is one of the main difficulties on the way towards a comprehensive theory of quasi-one-dimensional systems. - This meeting held at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kiev May 15-18 1990 was devoted to related problems. The papers selected for this volume are grouped into three sections |
