Title | Particle Detection with Drift Chambers |
Author(s) | Blum, Walter;Rolandi, Luigi |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | XV, 348 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume presents a thorough introduction to the theory and operation of drift chambers, one of the most important modern methods of elementary particle detection. The topics, presented in a text-book style with many illustrations, include the basics of gas ionization, electronic drift and signal creation and discuss in depth the fundamental limits of accuracy and the issue of particle identification. The book also surveys all types of drift chambers and the various drift-chamber gases in use. The calculation of the device parameters and physical processes are presented in some detail, as is all necessary background material. Thus the treatment, well byeond addressing the specialist in the field, is well suited to graduate physics students and nuclear engineers seeking a both thorough and pedagogical introduction to the field. The second edition presents an thoroughly revised and updated version of this classic text and includes a new chapter on electronic amplification and signal shaping |

Title | The Electron : New Theory and Experiment |
Author(s) | Hestenes, D;Weingartshofer, A |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1991. |
Description | XI, 403 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | techniques, and raises new issues of physical interpretation as well as possibilities for deepening the theory. (3) Barut contributes a comprehensive review of his own ambitious program in electron theory and quantum electrodynamics. Barut's work is rich with ingenious ideas, and the interest it provokes among other theorists can be seen in the cri tique by Grandy. Cooperstock takes a much different approach to nonlinear field-electron coupling which leads him to conclusions about the size of the electron. (4) Capri and Bandrauk work within the standard framework of quantum electrodynamics. Bandrauk presents a valuable review of his theoretical approach to the striking new photoelectric phenomena in high intensity laser experiments. (5) Jung proposes a theory to merge the ideas of free-free transitions and of scattering chaos, which is becoming increasingly important in the theoretical analysis of nonlinear optical phenomena. For the last half century the properties of electrons have been probed primarily by scattering experiments at ever higher energies. Recently, however, two powerful new experimental techniques have emerged capable of giving alternative experimental views of the electron. We refer to (1) the confinement of single electrons for long term study, and (2) the interaction of electrons with high intensity laser fields. Articles by outstanding practitioners of both techniques are included in Part II of these Proceedings. The precision experiments on trapped electrons by the Washington group quoted above have already led to a Nobel prize for the most accurate measurements of the electron magnetic moment |

Title | Physics at KAON : Hadron Spectroscopy, Strangeness, Rare Decays Proceedings of the International Meeting, Bad Honnef, 7???9 June 1989 |
Author(s) | Frekers, Dieter;Gill, David R;Speth, Josef |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990. |
Description | VIII, 203 p. 10 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | "Physics at KAON", an international meeting jointly organized by the KFA Jillich and TRI?? UMF, was held in the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef from June 7 through June 9, 1989. This was one of a series of meetings - the first one in Europe - in which plans for the medium energy physics laboratory KAON were presented and some aspects of the physics at this new facility were discussed. The meeting focussed mainly on the topics of hadron spectroscopy, J{ -meson scattering, strangeness in nuclei, and rare decays. Also presented were some of the research programs at SATURNE and COSY which may well lead to KAON physics in the future. These proceed?? ings include articles which summarize our current experimental and theoretical knowledge in the various areas, as well as papers which describe lines of research feasible with KAON. The large number of participants - limited, in fact, by the capacity of the Physikzentrum - clearly demonstrates the great interest of the European physics community in the research avenues which will be opened by the high-intensity hadron facilities. Title | Advanced Quantum Theory and Its Applications Through Feynman Diagrams |
Author(s) | Scadron, Michael D |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1979. |
Description | XIV, 386 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The fundamental goal of physics is an understanding of the forces of nature in their simplest and most general terms. Yet the scientific method inadver?? tently steers us away from that course by requiring an ever finer subdivision of the problem into constituent components, so that the overall objective is often obscured, even to the experts. The situation is most frustrating and acute for today's graduate students, who must try to absorb as much general knowledge as is possible and also try to digest only a sm all fraction of the ever increasing morass of observational data or detailed theories to write a dissertation. This book is based on the premise that to study a subject in depth is only half the battle; the remaining struggle is to put the pieces together in a broad but comprehensive manner. Accordingly, the primary purpose of this text is to cut across the barriers existing between the various fields ofmodern physics (elementary particles; nuclear, atomic, and solid state physics; gravitation) and present a unified description of the quantum nature of forces encountered in each field at the level of the second-year physics graduate student. This unification is based on one-body perturbation techniques, covariantly generalized to what are now called "Feynman diagrams," and is formulated aS,a simple (but nontriv?? ial) extension of ordinary nonrelativistic, one-particle quantum theory |

Title | Solutions Manual for Particle Physics at the New Millennium |
Author(s) | Roe, Byron P |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1996. |
Description | IV, 96 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Intended for beginning graduate students or advanced undergraduates, this text provides a thorough introduction to the phenomena of high-energy physics and the Standard Model of elementary particles. It should thus provide a sufficient introduction to the field for experimeters, as well as sufficient background for theorists to continue with advanced courses on field theory. The text develops the Standard Model from the bottom up, showing the experimental evidence for each theoretical assumption and emphasizing the most recent results. It includes thorough discussions of electromagnetic interactions (of interest in particle detection), magnetic monopoles, and extensions of the Standard Model |

Title | Finite Quantum Electrodynamics |
Author(s) | Scharf, G |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989. |
Description | X, 224 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this book the author carefully analyses the role of the concept of causality in Quantum Electrodynamics. This approach makes it possible for the first time to publish a textbook on QED which not only includes full proofs and detailed calculations but is also mathematically rigorous. The book begins with Dirac's theory in part one, followed in part two by the quantum theory of free fields including a new approach to the concept of exterior fields. The third part is devoted to the study of the S-matrix of QED avoiding ultraviolet divergence. The most important physical results of QED are derived, and significant themes such as unitarity and renormalizability of the theory are discussed. This slim book addresses graduate students in physics. From the reviews: "In the summary on the back cover the unheard-of statement appears that now the first (mathematically) rigorous textbook on Quantum Electrodynamics was on hand. ... In fact, "Finite Quantum Electrodynamics" does justice to this claim. And, in addition, in a pregnant, lifely form. On 220 pages G. Scharf (Zurich) succeeds in presenting a concise description of QED ... As promised, only finite quantities appear ... In Russia I often feel frustrated that I studied Latin in school and Russian was not offered. Now I have the same feeling after reading Scharf's book. I studied the wrong grammar up to now." #Translated from a review by Thomas Sch??cker in Physik in unserer Zeit#1 |
