Title | Microscopic Foundations of Relativistic Fluid Dynamics |
Author(s) | Denicol, Gabriel S;Rischke, Dirk H |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XVI, 292 p. 35 illus., 24 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides an introduction to relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics, with particular emphasis on its derivation from microscopic transport theory. After a phenomenological derivation of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics from the second law of thermodynamics, the intrinsic instabilities of relativistic Navier-Stokes theory are discussed. In turn, analytical solutions of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics are presented. Following, the authors discuss several theories and approaches to derive transport coefficients in dissipative fluid dynamics such as the Chapman-Enskog theory, the theory of Israel and Stewart, and a more recent derivation of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics based on kinetic theory, which constitutes the main focus of the second part of this book. This book is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers in physics and requires basic knowledge of the theory of special and general relativity. It should be of particular interest to researchers that apply relativistic fluid dynamics in cosmology, astrophysics, and high-energy nuclear physics |

Title | Acoustic Waves in Periodic Structures, Metamaterials, and Porous Media : From Fundamentals to Industrial Applications |
Author(s) | Jim??nez, No??;Umnova, Olga;Groby, Jean-Philippe |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XVII, 443 p. 180 illus., 108 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book delivers a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of practical applications of metamaterials, structured media, and conventional porous materials. With increasing levels of urbanization, a growing demand for motorized transport, and inefficient urban planning, environmental noise exposure is rapidly becoming a pressing societal and health concern. Phononic and sonic crystals, acoustic metamaterials, and metasurfaces can revolutionize noise and vibration control and, in many cases, replace traditional porous materials for these applications. In this collection of contributed chapters, a group of international researchers reviews the essentials of acoustic wave propagation in metamaterials and porous absorbers with viscothermal losses, as well as the most recent advances in the design of acoustic metamaterial absorbers. The book features a detailed theoretical introduction describing commonly used modelling techniques such as plane wave expansion, multiple scattering theory, and the transfer matrix method. The following chapters give a detailed consideration of acoustic wave propagation in viscothermal fluids and porous media, and the extension of this theory to non-local models for fluid saturated metamaterials, along with a description of the relevant numerical methods. Finally, the book reviews a range of practical industrial applications, making it especially attractive as a white book targeted at the building, automotive, and aeronautic industries |

Title | Lectures on the Mechanical Foundations of Thermodynamics |
Author(s) | Campisi, Michele |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XV, 91 p. 17 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This brief provides a modern pedagogical exposition of the mechanical approach to statistical mechanics initiated by Boltzmann with his early works (1866-1871). Despite the later contribution by Helmholtz, Boltzmann himself (1884-1887), Gibbs, P. Hertz, and Einstein, the mechanical approach remained almost unknown to the modern reader, in favour of the celebrated combinatorial approach, developed by Boltzmann himself during his probabilistic turn (1876-1884). The brief constitutes an ideal continuation of a graduate course of classical mechanics and requires knowledge of basic calculus in many dimension (including differential forms), thermodynamics, probability theory, besides Hamiltonian mechanics. The cornerstone of the whole presentation is the ergodic hypothesis. Special attention is devoted to Massieu potentials (the Legendre transforms of the entropy) which are most natural in statistical mechanics, and also allow for a more direct treatment of the topic of ensemble equivalence |

Title | Statistical Approach to Quantum Field Theory : An Introduction |
Author(s) | Wipf, Andreas |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XXIV, 554 p. 133 illus., 47 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This new expanded second edition has been totally revised and corrected. The reader finds two complete new chapters. One covers the exact solution of the finite temperature Schwinger model with periodic boundary conditions. This simple model supports instanton solutions ??? similarly as QCD ??? and allows for a detailed discussion of topological sectors in gauge theories, the anomaly-induced breaking of chiral symmetry and the intriguing role of fermionic zero modes. The other new chapter is devoted to interacting fermions at finite fermion density and finite temperature. Such low-dimensional models are used to describe long-energy properties of Dirac-type materials in condensed matter physics. The large-N solutions of the Gross-Neveu, Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and Thirring models are presented in great detail, where N denotes the number of fermion flavors. Towards the end of the book corrections to the large-N solution and simulation results of a finite number of fermion flavors are presented. Further problems are added at the end of each chapter in order to guide the reader to a deeper understanding of the presented topics. This book is meant for advanced students and young researchers who want to acquire the necessary tools and experience to produce research results in the statistical approach to Quantum Field Theory |

Title | Equations and Analytical Tools in Mathematical Physics : A Concise Introduction |
Author(s) | Zhu, Yichao |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021. |
Description | XII, 252 p. 37 illus., 29 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book highlights a concise and readable introduction to typical treatments of partial differential equations in mathematical physics. Mathematical physics is regarded by many as a profound discipline. In conventional textbooks of mathematical physics, the known and the new pieces of knowledge often intertwine with each other. The book aims to ease readers' struggle by facilitating a smooth transition to new knowledge. To achieve so, the author designs knowledge maps before each chapter and provides comparative summaries in each chapter whenever appropriate. Through these unique ways, readers can clarify the underlying structures among different equations and extend one's vision to the big picture. The book also emphasizes applications of the knowledge by providing practical examples. The book is intended for all those interested in mathematical physics, enabling them to develop a solid command in using partial differential equations to solve physics and engineering problems in a not-so-painful learning experience |

Title | Quantum Mechanics : Introduction to Mathematical Formulation |
Author(s) | Pieper, Martin |
Publication | Wiesbaden, Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2021. |
Description | XIII, 33 p. 8 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Anyone who has always wanted to understand the hieroglyphs on Sheldon's blackboard in the TV series The Big Bang Theory or who wanted to know exactly what the fate of Schr??dinger's cat is all about will find a short, descriptive introduction to the world of quantum mechanics in this essential. The text particularly focuses on the mathematical description in the Hilbert space. The content goes beyond popular scientific presentations, but is nevertheless suitable for readers without special prior knowledge thanks to the clear examples. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Quantenmechanik by Martin Pieper published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2019.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The content Quantum mechanics in Hilbert spaces Postulates of quantum mechanics Discrete energy levels with degeneracy Particles in the potential box, Stern-Gerlach experiment and Schr??dinger's cat The target groups Lecturers and students of engineering as well as natural and economic sciences Physically interested people from business and industry The author Prof. Dr. Martin Pieper has been Professor of Mathematics and Simulation at the FH Aachen since 2011. Before joining the FH Aachen, he was a research assistant in the Optimization department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics. |

Title | Deformations of Spacetime Symmetries : Gravity, Group-Valued Momenta, and Non-Commutative Fields |
Author(s) | Arzano, Michele;Kowalski-Glikman, Jerzy |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2021. |
Description | XIII, 192 p. 10 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This monograph provides an introduction to deformations of Poincar?? symmetries focusing on models with a Lie group momentum space and associated non-commutative space-times. The emphasis is put on the emergence of such structures from quantum gravity, their mathematical features described in terms of Hopf algebras and applications to particle kinematics and field theory. Part I of this work focuses on the link between gravity and deformed symmetries in the case of 2+1 and 3+1 space-time dimensions. Part II is devoted to the description of classical particles with group valued momenta, their phase spaces and kinematics. The last part of these notes provides an introduction to the basic features of classical and quantum field theory on ??-Minkowski space-time, the prototypical example of non-commutative space-time exhibiting deformed Poincar?? symmetry. The text, being the first providing a detailed overview of these topics, is primarily intended for researchers and graduate students interested in non-commutative field theories and quantum gravity phenomenology |

Title | Symmetry Breaking |
Author(s) | Strocchi, Franco |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2021. |
Description | XIII, 286 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The third edition of the by now classic reference on rigorous analysis of symmetry breaking in both classical and quantum field theories adds new topics of relevance, in particular the effect of dynamical Coulomb delocalization, by which boundary conditions give rise to volume effects and to energy/mass gap in the Goldstone spectrum (plasmon spectrum, Anderson superconductivity, Higgs phenomenon). The book closes with a discussion of the physical meaning of global and local gauge symmetries and their breaking, with attention to the effect of gauge group topology in QCD. From the reviews of the first edition: It is remarkable to see how much material can actually be presented in a rigorous way (incidentally, many of the results presented are due to Strocchi himself), yet this is largely ignored, the original heuristic derivations being, as a rule, more popular. - At each step he strongly emphasizes the physical meaning and motivation of the various notions introduced [...] a book that fills a conspicuous gap in the literature, and does it rather well. It could also be a good basis for a graduate course in mathematical physics. J.-P. Antoine, Physicalia 28/2, 2006 Despite many accounts in popular textbooks and a widespread belief, the phenomenon is rather subtle, requires an infinite set of degrees of freedom and an advanced mathematical setting of the system under investigation. [...] The mathematically oriented graduate student will certainly benefit from this thorough, rigorous and detailed investigation. G. Roepstorff, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1075, 2006 From the reviews of the second edition: This second edition of Strocchi???s Symmetry Breaking presents a complete, generalized and highly rigorous discussion of the subject, based on a formal analysis of conditions necessary for the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking to occur in classical systems, as well as in quantum systems. [???] This book is specifically recommended for mathematical physicists interested in a deeper and rigorous understanding of the subject, and it should be mandatory for researchers studying the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking.
