Title | Nuclear Power and Energy Security |
Author(s) | Apikyan, Samuel;Diamond, David |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2010. |
Description | XVI, 282 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The basic logic is very simple. Countries around the globe have a need for more electrical generating capacity because of increases in population and increases in energy use per capita. The needs are constrained by the requirement that the ba- load energy source be economical, secure, and not emit climate-changing gases. Nuclear power fits this description. Therefore, many countries that have not had a nuclear power program (or only had a small program) see a need to develop one in the future. However, the development of a national nuclear energy program is not so simple. The purpose of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Nuclear Power and Energy Security was to contribute to our understanding of how these programs might evolve. The workshop took place 26???29 May 2009 in Yerevan, Armenia. Approximately 50 participants discussed the infrastructure that is needed and some of the reactor options that might be considered. The papers in this book helped define the discussion that took place. The infrastructure that is needed includes a legal framework, a functioning regulator, a plan for waste disposal, a plan for emergency response, etc. These needs were explained and just as importantly, it was explained what international, bilateral, and regional cooperation is available. Although there were many co- tries represented, the Armenian experience was of particular interest because of where the meeting was located. The papers on reactor options covered both innovative and evolutionary designs |

Title | Particle Accelerator Physics II : Nonlinear and Higher-Order Beam Dynamics |
Author(s) | Wiedemann, H |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XVIII, 472 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Particle Accelerator Physics II continues the discussion of particle accelerator physics beyond the introductory Particle Accelerator Physics I. Aimed at students and scientists who plan to work or are working in the field of accelerator physics. Basic principles of beam dynamics already discussed in Vol.I are expanded into the nonlinear regime in order to tackle fundamental problems encountered in present-day accelerator design and development. Nonlinear dynamics is discussed both for the transverse phase space to determine chromatic and geometric aberrations which limit the dynamic aperture as well as for the longitude phase space in connection with phase focusing at very small values of the momentum compaction. Effects derived theoretically are compared with observations made at existing accelerators |

Title | High-Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure : Proceedings of the Third International Conference on High Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, held at Columbia University, New York City, September 8???12, 1969 |
Author(s) | Devons, S |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1970. |
Description | XLII, 860 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In preparing the program for this Conference, the third in the series, it soon became evident that it was not possible to in?? clude in a conference of reasonable duration all the topics that might be subsumed under the broad title, "High Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure. " From their initiation, in 1963, it has been as much the aim of these Conferences to provide some bridges between the steadily separating domains of particle and nuclear physics, as to explore thoroughly the borderline territory between the two -?? the sort of no-man's-land that lies unclaimed, or claimed by both sides. The past few years have witnessed the rapid development of many new routes connecting the two major areas of 'elementary par?? ticles' and 'nuclear structure', and these now spread over a great expanse of physics, logically perhaps including the whole of both subjects. (As recently as 1954, an International Conference on 'Nuclear and Meson Physics' did, in fact, embrace both fields!) Since it is not now possible to traverse, in one Conference, this whole network of connections, still less to explore the entire ter?? ritory it covers, the choice of topics has to be in some degree arbitrary. It is hoped that ours has served the purpose of fairly exemplifying many areas where physicists, normally separated by their diverse interests, can find interesting and important topics which bring them together |

Title | Particle Accelerator Physics I : Basic Principles and Linear Beam Dynamics |
Author(s) | Wiedemann, Helmut |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XVIII, 449 p. 37 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this second edition of Particle Accelerator Physics, Vol. 1, is mainly a reprint of the first edition without significant changes in content. The bibliography has been updated to include more recent progress in the field of particle accelerators. With the help of many observant readers a number of misprints and errors could be eliminated. The author would like to express his sincere appreciation to all those who have pointed out such shortcomings and wel?? comes such information and any other relevant information in the future. The author would also like to express his special thanks to the editor Dr. Helmut Lotsch and his staff for editorial as well as technical advice and support which contributed greatly to the broad acceptance of this text and made a second edition of both volumes necessary. Palo Alto, California Helmut Wiedemann November 1998 VII Preface to the First Edition The purpose of this textbook is to provide a comprehensive introduction into the physics of particle accelerators and particle beam dynamics. Parti?? cle accelerators have become important research tools in high energy physics as well as sources of incoherent and coherent radiation from the far infra red to hard x-rays for basic and applied research. During years of teaching accelerator physics it became clear that the single most annoying obstacle to get introduced into the field is the absence of a suitable textbook |

Title | Neutron Physics |
Author(s) | Beckurts, Karl-Heinrich;Wirtz, Karl |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1964. |
Description | X, 444 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is based upon a series of lectures I have occasionally given at the University of Gottingen since 1951. They were meant to introduce the students of experimental physics to the work in a neutron physics laboratory dealing with the problem of measuring neutron flux, diffusion length, Fermi age, effective neutron temperature, absorption cross sections and similar problems. Moreover, these lectures were intended to prepare the students for a subsequent lecture covering the physics of nuclear reactors. The original character of this series of lectures has been retained in the book. It is intended for use by students as well as anyone desiring to work on neutron physics measurements. The first half mainly covers the theory of neutron fields, i. e. essentially diffusion and slowing down theory. The second half is largely concerned with measurements in neutron fields. The appendix contains information and data which, in our experience, are frequently required in a neutron laboratory. The field of nuclear physics proper is briefly touched upon in the first two chapters, but only to the extent necessary for the understanding of the following chapters. The multitude of applications of neutron radiation has not been covered. The conclusion of this manuscript coincided with the end of my long period of activity with the Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik at Gottingen. To Professor HEISENBERG lowe thanks for his advice and suggestions for many of the subjects treated here |

Title | Particle Accelerator Physics : Basic Principles and Linear Beam Dynamics |
Author(s) | Wiedemann, Helmut |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | XVI, 445 p. 16 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Particle Accelerator Physics is designed to serve as an introduction to the field of high-energy particle accelerator physics and particle-beam dynamics. It covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed. Basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. The discussions specifically concentrate on relativistic particle beams and the physics of beam optics in beam transport systems and circular accelerators such as synchrotrons and storage rings. This book is aimed at students and scientists who are interested in an introduction to particle-beam optics and accelerator physics. It provides a general understanding of particle-beam physics and forms a broad basis for further, more detailed studies of nonlinear beam dynamics and associated accelerator physics problems to be discussed in a subsequent volume |

Title | Particle Accelerator Physics II : Nonlinear and Higher-Order Beam Dynamics |
Author(s) | Wiedemann, Helmut |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XVI, 464 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This text is a continuation of the first volume of "Particle Accelerator Physics" on "Basic Principles and Linear Beam Dynamics". While the first volume was written as an introductory overview into beam dynamics, it does not include more detailled discussion of nonlinear and higher-order beam dynamics or the full theory of synchrotron radiation from relativistic electron beams. Both issues are, however, of fundamental importance for the design of modern particle accelerators. In this volume, beam dynamics is formulated within the realm of Hamil?? tonian dynamics, leading to the description of multiparticle beam dynamics with the Vlasov equation and including statistical processes with the Fokker Planck equation. Higher-order perturbations and aberrations are discussed in detail, including Hamiltonian resonance theory and higher-order beam dynamics. The discussion of linear beam dynamics in Vol. I is completed here with the derivation of the general equation of motion, including kine?? matic terms and coupled motion. To build on the theory of longitudinal motion in Vol. I, the interaction of a particle beam with the rf system, in?? cluding beam loading, higher-order phase focusing, and the combination of acceleration and transverse focusing, is discussed. The emission of syn?? chrotron radiation greatly affects the beam quality of electron or positron beams and we therefore derive the detailled theory of synchrotron radiation, including spatial and spectral distribution as well as properties of polariza?? tion |
