Title | Radioactivity and Radiation : What They Are, What They Do, and How to Harness Them |
Author(s) | Grupen, Claus;Rodgers, Mark |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XI, 248 p. 137 illus., 26 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book lays the foundations for you to understand all that you always wanted to know about radioactivity. It begins by setting out essential information about the structure of matter, how radiation occurs and how it can be measured. It goes on to explore the substantial benefits of radioactivity through its many applications, and also the possible risks associated with its use. The field of radioactivity is explained in layman???s terms, so that everybody who is interested can improve their understanding of issues such as nuclear power, radiation accidents, medical applications of radiation and radioactivity from the environment. Everything is radioactive. There is natural radioactivity in the homes that we live in, the food that we eat and the air that we breath. For over 100 years, people have recognised the potential for radioactivity to help solve problems and improve our standard of living. This has led to the creation of radioactivity levels in some places that are much higher than naturally-occurring background levels. Such high levels of radiation can be harmful to people and the environment, so there is a clear need to manage this potential harm and to make the risk worth the benefits mankind can achieve from radioactive materials |

Title | Search for Supersymmetry in pp Collisions at ???s = 8 TeV with a Photon, Lepton, and Missing Transverse Energy |
Author(s) | Iiyama, Yutaro |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XIII, 174 p. 68 illus., 59 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This Ph.D. thesis is a search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) of particle physics, which successfully describes the interactions and properties of all known elementary particles. However, no particle exists in the SM that can account for the dark matter, which makes up about one quarter of the energy-mass content of the universe. Understanding the nature of dark matter is one goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The extension of the SM with supersymmetry (SUSY) is considered a promising possibilities to explain dark matter. The nominated thesis describes a search for SUSY using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. It utilizes a final state consisting of a photon, a lepton, and a large momentum imbalance probing a class of SUSY models that has not yet been studied extensively. The thesis stands out not only due to its content that is explained with clarity but also because the author performed more or less all aspects of the thesis analysis by himself, from data skimming to limit calculations, which is extremely rare, especially nowadays in the large LHC collaborations |

Title | Study of Double Parton Scattering in Photon + 3 Jets Final State : In Proton-Proton Collisions at ???s = 7TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC |
Author(s) | Chang, You-Hao |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2017. |
Description | XIV, 101 p. 49 illus., 43 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book mainly focuses on the study of photon + 3 jets final state in Proton-Proton Collisions at ???s = 7TeV, searching for patterns of two (or more) distinct hard scatterings in the same collision, i.e the so-called Double Parton Scattering (DPS). A new method by using Monte Carlo generators was performed and provides higher order corrections to the description of the Single Parton Scattering (SPS) background. Further it is investigated whether additional contributions from DPS can improve the agreement between the measured data and the Monte Carlo predictions. The current theoretical uncertainties related to the SPS background are found to be larger than expectation. At the same time a rich set of DPS-sensitive measurements is reported for possible further interpretation |

Title | Relativistic Nonlinear Electrodynamics : The QED Vacuum and Matter in Super-Strong Radiation Fields |
Author(s) | Avetissian, Hamlet Karo |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XVII, 506 p. 59 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This revised edition of the author???s classic 2006 text offers a comprehensively updated review of the field of relativistic nonlinear??electrodynamics. It explores the interaction of strong and super-strong electromagnetic/laser radiation with the electromagnetic quantum vacuum and diverse types of matter ??? including free charged particles and antiparticles, acceleration beams, plasma and plasmous media.?? The appearance of laser sources of relativistic and ultra-relativistic intensities over the last decade has stimulated investigation of a large class of processes under such super-strong radiation fields. Revisions for this second edition reflect these developments and the book includes new chapters on Bremsstrahlung and nonlinear absorption of superintense radiation in plasmas, the nonlinear interaction of relativistic atoms with intense laser radiation, nonlinear interaction of strong laser radiation with Graphene, and relativistic nonlinear phenomena in solid-plasma targets under supershort laser pulses of ultrarelativistic intensities. The only book devoted to the subject of relativistic nonlinear electrodynamics, this second edition will be a valuable resource for??graduate students and researchers involved in any aspect of the field, including those working with intense x-ray ??? gamma-ray lasers, the new generation of small size laser-plasma accelerators of superhigh energies and high-brightness particle beams |

Title | CMS Pixel Detector Upgrade and Top Quark Pole Mass Determination |
Author(s) | Spannagel, Simon |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XXVII, 274 p. 136 illus., 74 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern high-energy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential cross-section of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new front-end electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new front-end in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpol ation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production cross-sections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method |

Title | From Tracking Code to Analysis : Generalised Courant-Snyder Theory for Any Accelerator Model |
Author(s) | Forest, Etienne |
Publication | Tokyo, Springer Japan, 2016. |
Description | XXIII, 347 p. 11 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book illustrates a theory well suited to tracking codes, which the author has developed over the years. Tracking codes now play a central role in the design and operation of particle accelerators. The theory is fully explained step by step with equations and actual codes that the reader can compile and run with freely available compilers. In this book, the author pursues a detailed approach based on finite ???s???-maps, since this is more natural as long as tracking codes remain at the centre of accelerator design. The hierarchical nature of software imposes a hierarchy that puts map-based perturbation theory above any other methods. The map-based approach, perhaps paradoxically, allows ultimately an implementation of the Deprit-Guignard-Schoch algorithms more faithful than anything found in the standard literature. This hierarchy of methods is not a personal choice: it follows logically from tracking codes overloaded with a truncated power series algebra package. After defining abstractly and briefly what a tracking code is, the author illustrates most of the accelerator perturbation theory using an actual code: PTC. This book may seem like a manual for PTC; however, the reader is encouraged to explore other tools as well. The presence of an actual code ensures that readers will have a tool with which they can test their understanding. Codes and examples will be available from various sites since PTC is in MAD-X (CERN) and BMAD (Cornell) |

Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XV, 252 p. 109 illus., 35 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this book, renowned scientists describe the various techniques used to detect and characterize extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, with a view to unveiling the ???tricks of the trade??? of planet detection to a wider community. The radial velocity method, transit method, microlensing method, and direct imaging method are all clearly explained, drawing attention to their advantages and limitations and highlighting the complementary roles that they can play in improving the characterization of exoplanets??? physical and orbital properties. By probing the planetary frequency at different distances and in different conditions, these techniques are helping astrophysicists to reconstruct the scenarios of planetary formation and to give robust scientific answers to questions regarding the frequency of potentially habitable worlds. Twenty years have passed since the discovery of a Jupiter-mass companion to a main sequence star other than the Sun, heralding the birth of extrasolar planetary research; this book fully conveys the exciting progress that has been achieved during the intervening period |

Title | Observation of ??_???????_e Oscillation in the T2K Experiment |
Author(s) | Ieki, Kei |
Publication | Tokyo, Springer Japan, 2016. |
Description | XIII, 199 p. 156 illus., 12 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this thesis the author contributes to the analysis of neutrino beam data collected between 2010 and 2013 to identify ?????????e events at the Super-Kamiokande detector. In particular, the author improves the pion???nucleus interaction uncertainty, which is one of the dominant systematic error sources in T2K neutrino oscillation measurement. In the thesis, the measurement of ?????????e oscillation in the T2K (Tokai to Kamioka) experiment is presented and a new constraint on ??CP is obtained. This measurement and the analysis establish, at greater than 5?? significance, the observation of ?????????e oscillation for the first time in the world. Combining the T2K ?????????e oscillation measurement with the latest findings on oscillation parameters including the world average value of ??13 from reactor experiments, the constraint on the value of ??CP at the 90% confidence level is obtained. This constraint on ??CP is an important step towards the discovery of CP violation in the lepton sector. |
