TitleAbsolute Therapeutic Medical Physics Review : Questions and Detailed Answers
Author(s)Heard, Malcolm;Boopathy, Raghavendiran;Thomas, Jr., Charles R
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionX, 129 p. 21 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a comprehensive study guide for the therapeutic medical physicist pursuing initial board certification and those participating in continuing education. Medical physics is an evolving field as a result of rapidly developing technology and the focus on evidence-based care in radiation oncology. Recently, the certification body has mandated an online question and answer system to allow practicing physicist to receive continuing education credits. The questions are designed to test the walking around knowledge of the clinical physicist. Many physicists specialize in specific treatment modalities, thus limiting their exposure to other areas of clinical physics. This handbook allows these physicists to stay up-to-date and satisfy the requirements of the certification body. The text is divided into 2 main sections: Questions & Detailed Answers. Question chapters are divided by the ABR content guide and are composed of 15-35 questions. Questions are primarily multiple choice in nature with 4-5 possible answers, but there are also matching questions. Questions review the scope of medical physics, spanning from medical physics theories to day-to-day applications in clinic. The questions and detailed answers will be set in such a way to address most relevant and commonly tested topics of dosimetry, treatment machine, treatment planning, protection, radiobiology, radiation safety and professionalism and ethics. The questions will most closely fit to what is done in clinical practice. Detailed answers not only explain the correct answer, but also discuss the erroneous remaining answers with the appropriate citation of the most recent protocols, guidelines, publications and task group recommendations. This is an ideal study guide for therapeutic medical physicists in training and in practice, who need to pass a written board examination or prepare themselves for their continuing education requirements

Author(s)Jain, Sudhir Ranjan;Paradkar, Bhooshan S;Chitre, Shashikumar M
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXVIII, 279 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook is a pedagogic introduction to a number of phenomena employing fluid mechanics. Beginning with basic concepts and conservation laws for neutral and charged fluids, the authors apply and develop them to understand aerodynamics, locomotion of micro-organisms, waves in air and water, shock waves, hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic instabilities, stars and black holes, blood flow in humans, and superfluids. The approach is to consider various striking topics on fluid mechanics, without losing necessary mathematical rigor. The book balances the qualitative explanations with formal treatment, in a compact manner. A special focus is given to the important and difficult subject of turbulence and the book ends with a discussion on turbulence in quantum fluids. The textbook is dotted by a number of illustrative examples, mostly from real life, and exercises. The textbook is designed for a one semester course and addresses students at undergraduate and graduate level in physics or engineering, who want to research in the fields as diverse as aeronautics, meteorology, cosmology, biomechanics, and mathematical physics. It is requested knowledge of an undergraduate level course on mathematical methods to better understand the topics presented here

TitleRadiological and Nuclear Terrorism : Their Science, Effects, Prevention, and Recovery
Author(s)Karam, P. Andrew
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXXI, 290 p. 58 illus., 47 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses multiple aspects of radiological and nuclear terrorism. Do you know what to do if there is a radiological or nuclear emergency in your city? These accidents are not common, but they have happened ??? and even though we have not seen an attack using these weapons, governments around the world are making plans for how to prevent them ??? and for how to respond if necessary. Whether you are an emergency responder, a medical caregiver, a public health official ??? even a member of the public wanting to know how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe ??? there is a need to understand how these weapons work, how radiation affects our health, how to stop an attack from taking place, how to respond appropriately in the event of an emergency, and much more. Unfortunately, the knowledge that is needed to accomplish all of this is lacking at all levels of society and government. In this book, Dr. Andrew Karam, an internationally respected expert in radiation safety and multiple aspects of radiological and nuclear emergencies, discusses how these weapons work and what they can do, how they can affect our health, how to keep yourself safe, and how to react appropriately whether you are a police officer investigating a suspect radiological weapon, a firefighter responding to a radiological or nuclear attack, a nurse or physician caring for potentially contaminated patients, or a governmental official trying to keep the public safe. To do this, he draws upon his extensive experience in the military, the several years he worked directly with emergency responders, his service on a number of advisory committees, and multiple trips overseas in the aftermath of the Fukushima accident and on behalf of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Interpol, and the Health Physics Society.

TitleRadioactivity and Radiation : What They Are, What They Do, and How to Harness Them
Author(s)Grupen, Claus;Rodgers, Mark
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXI, 248 p. 137 illus., 26 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book lays the foundations for you to understand all that you always wanted to know about radioactivity. It begins by setting out essential information about the structure of matter, how radiation occurs and how it can be measured. It goes on to explore the substantial benefits of radioactivity through its many applications, and also the possible risks associated with its use. The field of radioactivity is explained in layman???s terms, so that everybody who is interested can improve their understanding of issues such as nuclear power, radiation accidents, medical applications of radiation and radioactivity from the environment. Everything is radioactive. There is natural radioactivity in the homes that we live in, the food that we eat and the air that we breath. For over 100 years, people have recognised the potential for radioactivity to help solve problems and improve our standard of living. This has led to the creation of radioactivity levels in some places that are much higher than naturally-occurring background levels. Such high levels of radiation can be harmful to people and the environment, so there is a clear need to manage this potential harm and to make the risk worth the benefits mankind can achieve from radioactive materials

TitleAn Intraoperative Beta???Probe for Cancer Surgery
Author(s)Collamati, Francesco
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXIV, 100 p. 55 illus., 24 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis focuses on a novel radio-guided surgery technique for complete tumor resections. It describes all aspects of the intraoperative probe, as well as testing and simulation of the novel technique. The presentation develops the technique from the initial idea to realistic feasibility studies that have been the subject of a press release of the American Society of Nuclear Medicine. Just a year after completing this work, the technique has now been tested for the first time on a meningioma patient, confirming all of the predictions made in this thesis
