TitleProbability and Stochastic Processes for Physicists
Author(s)Cufaro Petroni, Nicola
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXIII, 373 p. 51 illus., 43 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book seeks to bridge the gap between the parlance, the models, and even the notations used by physicists and those used by mathematicians when it comes to the topic of probability and stochastic processes. The opening four chapters elucidate the basic concepts of probability, including probability spaces and measures, random variables, and limit theorems. Here, the focus is mainly on models and ideas rather than the mathematical tools. The discussion of limit theorems serves as a gateway to extensive coverage of the theory of stochastic processes, including, for example, stationarity and ergodicity, Poisson and Wiener processes and their trajectories, other Markov processes, jump-diffusion processes, stochastic calculus, and stochastic differential equations. All these conceptual tools then converge in a dynamical theory of Brownian motion that compares the Einstein???Smoluchowski and Ornstein???Uhlenbeck approaches, highlighting the most important ideas that finally led to a connection between the Schr??dinger equation and diffusion processes along the lines of Nelson???s stochastic mechanics. A series of appendices cover particular details and calculations, and offer concise treatments of particular thought-provoking topics

TitleToward Inertial-Navigation-on-Chip : The Physics and Performance Scaling of Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Resonant MEMS Gyroscopes
Author(s)Wen, Haoran
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXIII, 127 p. 92 illus., 83 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis develops next-generation multi-degree-of-freedom gyroscopes and inertial measurement units (IMU) using micro-electromechanical-systems (MEMS) technology. It covers both a comprehensive study of the physics of resonator gyroscopes and novel micro/nano-fabrication solutions to key performance limits in MEMS resonator gyroscopes. Firstly, theoretical and experimental studies of physical phenomena including mode localization, nonlinear behavior, and energy dissipation provide new insights into challenges like quadrature errors and flicker noise in resonator gyroscope systems. Secondly, advanced designs and micro/nano-fabrication methods developed in this work demonstrate valuable applications to a wide range of MEMS/NEMS devices. In particular, the HARPSS+ process platform established in this thesis features a novel slanted nano-gap transducer, which enabled the first wafer-level-packaged single-chip IMU prototype with co-fabricated high-frequency resonant triaxial gyroscopes and high-bandwidth triaxial micro-gravity accelerometers. This prototype demonstrates performance amongst the highest to date, with unmatched robustness and potential for flexible substrate integration and ultra-low-power operation. This thesis shows a path toward future low-power IMU-based applications including wearable inertial sensors, health informatics, and personal inertial navigation

TitleBifurcation and Stability in Nonlinear Discrete Systems
Author(s)Luo, Albert C. J
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionX, 313 p. 43 illus., 16 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book focuses on bifurcation and stability in nonlinear discrete systems, including monotonic and oscillatory stability. It presents the local monotonic and oscillatory stability and bifurcation of period-1 fixed-points on a specific eigenvector direction, and discusses the corresponding higher-order singularity of fixed-points. Further, it explores the global analysis of monotonic and oscillatory stability of fixed-points in 1-dimensional discrete systems through 1-dimensional polynomial discrete systems. Based on the Yin-Yang theory of nonlinear discrete systems, the book also addresses the dynamics of forward and backward nonlinear discrete systems, and the existence conditions of fixed-points in said systems. Lastly, in the context of local analysis, it describes the normal forms of nonlinear discrete systems and infinite-fixed-point discrete systems. Examining nonlinear discrete systems from various perspectives, the book helps readers gain a better understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of such systems

TitleVibro-Acoustics, Volume 2
Author(s)Nilsson, Anders;Liu, Bilong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2016.
DescriptionX, 452 p. 213 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis three-volume book gives a thorough and comprehensive presentation of vibration and acoustic theories. Different from traditional textbooks which typically deal with some aspects of either acoustic or vibration problems, it is unique of this book to combine those two correlated subjects together. Moreover, it provides fundamental analysis and mathematical descriptions for several crucial phenomena of Vibro-Acoustics which are quite useful in noise reduction, including how structures are excited, energy flows from an excitation point to a sound radiating surface, and finally how a structure radiates noise to a surrounding fluid. Many measurement results included in the text make the reading interesting and informative. Problems/questions are listed at the end of each chapter and the solutions are provided. This will help the readers to understand the topics of Vibro-Acoustics more deeply. The book should be of interest to anyone interested in sound and vibration, vehicle acoustics, ship acoustics and interior aircraft noise. This is the second volume, and covers the following topics: Hamilton???s principle and some other variational methods, Structural coupling between simple systems including resilient mountings, Waves in fluids, Fluid structure interaction and radiation of sound to light and heavy fluids, Sound transmission loss of panels and shells, Waveguides and sandwich structures, Random and TBL excitation of plates and shells, Energy flow in built up structures

TitleAdvances in Synchronization of Coupled Fractional Order Systems : Fundamentals and Methods
Author(s)Mart??nez-Guerra, Rafael;P??rez-Pinacho, Claudia Alejandra
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXIX, 185 p. 66 illus., 59 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteAfter a short introduction to the fundamentals, this book provides a detailed account of major advances in applying fractional calculus to dynamical systems. Fractional order dynamical systems currently continue to gain further importance in many areas of science and engineering. As with many other approaches to mathematical modeling, the first issue to be addressed is the need to couple a definition of the fractional differentiation or integration operator with the types of dynamical systems that are analyzed. As such, for the fundamentals the focus is on basic aspects of fractional calculus, in particular stability analysis, which is required to tackle synchronization in coupled fractional order systems, to understand the essence of estimators for related integer order systems, and to keep track of the interplay between synchronization and parameter observation. This serves as the common basis for the more advanced topics and applications presented in the subsequent chapters, which include an introduction to the 'Immersion and Invariance' (I&I) methodology, the masterslave synchronization scheme for partially known nonlinear fractional order systems, Fractional Algebraic Observability (FAO) and Fractional Generalized quasi-Synchronization (FGqS) to name but a few. This book is intended not only for applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists, but also for anyone in applied science dealing with complex nonlinear systems.
