DescriptionX, 348 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSingularities in Fluids, Plasmas and Optics, which contains the proceedings of a NATO Workshop held in Heraklion, Greece, in July 1992, provides a survey of the state of the art in the analysis and computation of singularities in physical problems drawn from fluid mechanics, plasma physics and nonlinear optics. The singularities include curvature singularities on fluid interfaces, the onset of turbulence in 3-D inviscid flows, focusing singularities for laser beams, and magnetic reconnection. The highlights of the book include the nonlinear Schr??dinger equation for describing laser beam focusing, the method of complex variables for the analysis and computation of singularities on fluid interfaces, and studies of singularities for the 3-D Euler equations. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in these areas

TitleMathematics and Physics of Neutron Radiography
Author(s)Harms, A.A;Wyman, D.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1986.
DescriptionXIV, 164 p : online resource
Abstract NoteNeutron radiography has in recent years emerged as a useful and complementary technology for radiation diagnosis. It is now routinely used in industrial quality assurance and in support of selected research and developmental activities. Conferences are held on the subject, pertinent handbooks exist, and technical papers appear regularly reporting on new developments. While neutron radiography has indeed passed through the transition from a scientific curiosity to technological relevance, it is a sign of its continuing dynamic evolution that little material has appeared which provides an integrated mathematical and physical analysis of the subject possessing both an instructional as well as reference function. It is our hope that this monograph will fill this need. The distinctiveness of neutron radiography rests on the unique interactions between neutrons and nuclei. This leads to some special relationships between the material and geometrical properties of an object and the neutron radiographic image. The evolution of a technical discipline demands that specific conceptual constructs be developed and their mathematical representations examined and compared with controlled experiments. Experience has convinced us that a particular and substantial body of knowledge has accumulated endowing neutron radiography with the essential foundations of a unique mathematical and physical science. Our scientific and professional involvement in neutron radiography began some 15 years ago when the senior author (A.A.H.) found himself with convenient access to the McMaster University Nuclear Reactor and research support from the Government of Canada

TitleSpacecraft Attitude Determination and Control
Author(s)Wertz, J.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1978.
DescriptionXVIII, 858 p : online resource
Abstract NoteRoger D. Werking Head, Attitude Determination and Control Section National Aeronautics and Space Administration/ Goddard Space Flight Center Extensiye work has been done for many years in the areas of attitude determination, attitude prediction, and attitude control. During this time, it has been difficult to obtain reference material that provided a comprehensive overview of attitude support activities. This lack of reference material has made it difficult for those not intimately involved in attitude functions to become acquainted with the ideas and activities which are essential to understanding the various aspects of spacecraft attitude support. As a result, I felt the need for a document which could be used by a variety of persons to obtain an understanding of the work which has been done in support of spacecraft attitude objectives. It is believed that this book, prepared by the Computer Sciences Corporation under the able direction of Dr. James Wertz, provides this type of reference. This book can serve as a reference for individuals involved in mission planning, attitude determination, and attitude dynamics; an introductory textbook for stu?? dents and professionals starting in this field; an information source for experimen?? ters or others involved in spacecraft-related work who need information on spacecraft orientation and how it is determined, but who have neither the time nor the resources to pursue the varied literature on this subject; and a tool for encouraging those who could expand this discipline to do so, because much remains to be done to satisfy future needs

DescriptionXVIII, 436 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThese three volumes constitute the edited Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work held at the University of Calgary from July 29 to August 10, ~. 974. The general title of the volumes is "Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work". The individual volumes are: Volume 1 - Models and Structures; Volume 2 - Model Building and Model Selection; and Volume 3 - Characterizations and Applications. These correspond to the three advanced seminars of the Institute devoted to the respective subject areas. The planned activities of the Institute consisted of main lectures and expositions, seminar lectures and study group dis?? cussions, tutorials and individual study. The activities included meetings of editorial committees to discuss editorial matters for these proceedings which consist of contributions that have gone through the usual refereeing process. A special session was organized to consider the potential of introducing a course on statistical distributions in scientific modeling in the curriculum of statistics and quantitative studies. This session is reported in Volume 2. The overall perspective for the Institute is provided by the Institute Director, Professor G. P. Pati1, in his inaugural address which appears in Volume 1. The Linnik Memorial Inaugural Lecture given by Professor C. R. Rao for the Characterizations Seminar is included in Volume 3. As discussed in the Institute inaugural address, not mL

TitleDiscrete Transforms
Author(s)Firth, J.M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992.
Description187 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe analysis of signals and systems using transform methods is a very important aspect of the examination of processes and problems in an increasingly wide range of applications. Whereas the initial impetus in the development of methods appropriate for handling discrete sets of data occurred mainly in an electrical engineering context (for example in the design of digital filters), the same techniques are in use in such disciplines as cardiology, optics, speech analysis and management, as well as in other branches of science and engineering. This text is aimed at a readership whose mathematical background includes some acquaintance with complex numbers, linear differen?? tial equations, matrix algebra, and series. Specifically, a familiarity with Fourier series (in trigonometric and exponential forms) is assumed, and an exposure to the concept of a continuous integral transform is desirable. Such a background can be expected, for example, on completion of the first year of a science or engineering degree course in which transform techniques will have a significant application. In other disciplines the readership will be past the second year undergraduate stage. In either case, the text is also intended for earlier graduates whose degree courses did not include this type of material and who now find themselves, in a professional capacity, requiring a knowledge of discrete transform methods

TitleSolving Frontier Problems of Physics: The Decomposition Method
Author(s)Adomian, G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXIV, 354 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Adomian decomposition method enables the accurate and efficient analytic solution of nonlinear ordinary or partial differential equations without the need to resort to linearization or perturbation approaches. It unifies the treatment of linear and nonlinear, ordinary or partial differential equations, or systems of such equations, into a single basic method, which is applicable to both initial and boundary-value problems. This volume deals with the application of this method to many problems of physics, including some frontier problems which have previously required much more computationally-intensive approaches. The opening chapters deal with various fundamental aspects of the decomposition method. Subsequent chapters deal with the application of the method to nonlinear oscillatory systems in physics, the Duffing equation, boundary-value problems with closed irregular contours or surfaces, and other frontier areas. The potential application of this method to a wide range of problems in diverse disciplines such as biology, hydrology, semiconductor physics, wave propagation, etc., is highlighted. For researchers and graduate students of physics, applied mathematics and engineering, whose work involves mathematical modelling and the quantitative solution of systems of equations

TitleGeometry, Fields and Cosmology : Techniques and Applications
Author(s)Iyer, B.R;Vishveshwara, C.V
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionXVI, 558 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume is based on the lectures given at the First Inter University Graduate School on Gravitation and Cosmology organized by IUCAA, Pune, in 1989. This series of Schools have been carefully planned to provide a sound background and preparation for students embarking on research in these and related topics. Consequently, the contents of these lectures have been meticulously selected and arranged. The topics in the present volume offer a firm mathematical foundation for a number of subjects to be de?? veloped later. These include Geometrical Methods for Physics, Quantum Field Theory Methods and Relativistic Cosmology. The style of the book is pedagogical and should appeal to students and research workers attempt?? ing to learn the modern techniques involved. A number of specially selected problems with hints and solutions have been included to assist the reader in achieving mastery of the topics. We decided to bring out this volume containing the lecture notes since we felt that they would be useful to a wider community of research workers, many of whom could not participate in the school. We thank all the lecturers for their meticulous lectures, the enthusiasm they brought to the discussions and for kindly writing up their lecture notes. It is a pleasure to thank G. Manjunatha for his meticulous assistence over a long period, in preparing this volume for publication

TitleWavelets and Their Applications
Author(s)Byrnes, J.S;Hargreaves, Kathryn A;Berry, Karl
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXII, 415 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIt is probably true quite generally that in the history of human thinking the most fruitful developments frequently take place at those points where two different lines of thought meet. Hence, if they actually meet, that is, if they are at least so much related to each other that a real interaction can take place, then one may hope that new and interesting developments may follow. Werner Heisenberg This volume contains papers presented at the August 1992 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Wavelets and Their Applications. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy. Once again we gathered at this idyllic spot to explore and extend the reciprocity between mathematics and engineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usu?? ally disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied scientists, which occurred at our 1989 and 1991 ASI's, continued at this meeting. Wavelet theory and technology is in an important growth stage at which theoretical and practical results are being compared with existing methods. There have been spectacular wavelet successes and sobering comparisons with traditional ideas-but still there is a wide expanse of scientific problems to explore. Since these problems lie at the forefront of both pure mathematics and applied science, our NATO ASI was especially pertinent at this time

TitleExercises in Quantum Mechanics : A Collection of Illustrative Problems and Their Solutions
Author(s)Mavromatis, H.A
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1987.
DescriptionXI, 181 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis monograph is written within the framework of the quantum mechanical paradigm. It is modest in scope in that it is restricted to some obser?? vations and solved illustrative problems not readily available in any of the many standard (and several excellent) texts or books with solved problems that have been written on this subject. Additionally a few more or less standard problems are included for continuity and purposes of comparison. The hope is that the points made and problems solved will give the student some additional insights and a better grasp of this fascinating but mathematically somewhat involved branch of physics. The hundred and fourteen problems discussed have intentionally been chosen to involve a minimum of technical complexity while still illus?? trating the consequences of the quantum-mechanical formalism. Concerning notation, useful expressions are displayed in rectangular boxes while calculational details which one may wish to skip are included in square brackets
