Title | More Things in Heaven and Earth : A Celebration of Physics at the Millennium |
Author(s) | Bederson, Benjamin |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1999. |
Description | XXI, 841 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The 20th century has been the century of physics,a period of unparalleled scientific advances fueled primarily by discoveries by physicists. The 20th century also represents the life span of the American Physical Society, not coincidentally, and to celebrate both its own centennial and this remarkable century, the APS has prepared a book highlighting the seminal discoveries of the 20th century, with invited articles by the world's most eminent living physicists, including 12 physics Nobel Prize winners. Included will be chapters by R. Richardson on superfludity, J. Lebowitz on statistical mechanics, P. deGennes on granular material, J. Hopfield on neural networks, C. Wieman on matter waves, A. Pais on high energy physics in the early 20th century . The book will contain about 40 chapters on a broad range of topics in physics written in an engaging and personal style. While the technical level is high, these are not review articles, but rather perspectives on discoveries written by those scientists most closely assoicated with the original work as well future directions of research. The book will be promoted to the meeting attendees in advance of the March meeting, and should be of interest to the broad scientific community. Ben Bederson, professor of physics at NYU, was editor in chief of the APS journals from 1986-1997. He is also editor of the Advances in Atomic Physics Series (Academic Press) |

Description | VIII, 619 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | IAU Transactions are published as a volume corresponding to each General Assembly. Volume A is produced prior to the Assembly and contains Reports on Astronomy, prepared by each Commission President. The intention is to summarize the astronomical results that have affected the work of the Commission since the production of the previous Reports up to a time which is about one year prior to the General Assembly. Volume B is produced after the Assembly and contains accounts of Commission Meetings which were held, together with other material. The reports included in the present volume range from outline summaries to lengthy compilations and references |

Title | Gravity and the Quantum: Pedagogical Essays on Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Quantum Gravity |
Author(s) | Jasjeet Singh Bagla (ed.);Sunu Engineer (ed.) |
Publication | Switzerland, Springer, 2017. |
Description | XII, 494 p. 54 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides a compilation of in-depth articles and reviews on key topics within gravitation, cosmology and related issues. It is a celebratory volume dedicated to Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan ("Paddy"), the renowned relativist and cosmologist from IUCAA, India, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The authors, many of them leaders of their fields, are all colleagues, collaborators and former students of Paddy, who have worked with him over a research career spanning more than four decades. Paddy is a scientist of diverse interests, who attaches great importance to teaching. With this in mind, the aim of this compilation is to provide an accessible pedagogic introduction to, and overview of, various important topics in cosmology, gravitation and astrophysics. As such it will be an invaluable resource for scientists, graduate students and also advanced undergraduates seeking to broaden their horizons |
