Title | The Perceptual Structure of Sound |
Author(s) | Hermes, Dik J |

2. Springer International Publishing, 2023. |
Description | XIX, 827 p. 289 illus., 247 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents a comprehensive review of how acoustic waves are processed by the auditory system into structured sounds such as musical melodies, speech utterances, or environmental sounds. After an introduction, an overview is given of how the ears distribute acoustic information over a large array of frequency channels that contain the auditory information used by the central nervous system to generate a mental image of what is happening around the listener. This process, called auditory scene analysis, consists of two stages. In the first stage, auditory units are formed such as musical tones and speech syllables. Each auditory unit is perceived at a well-defined moment in time, the beat location of that auditory unit. Moreover, from this process of auditory-unit formation, the auditory attributes of these auditory units emerge, such as their timbre, their pitch, their loudness, and their perceived location. Each of these attributes is discussed in the corresponding chapter. In the second stage of auditory scene analysis, auditory-stream formation, the successive auditory units are integrated into auditory streams, i.e., temporally structured sequences of auditory units that are perceived as emanating from one and the same sound source. Examples of such auditory streams are musical melodies and the utterances of one speaker. The temporal structure of an auditory stream, its rhythm, is determined by the beat locations of its auditory units. The role played by the auditory attributes of the consecutive auditory units is discussed. The melodies of musical streams and the intonation contours of spoken utterances emerge from this process. In music, the beats of parallel streams generally fit into a metric pattern, and, depending on harmony, simultaneous tones can be perceived as consonant or dissonant. Finally, the book contains many sound examples including the MATLAB scripts with which theyare generated |

Title | Design Acoustics : Primary and Secondary Noise Mitigation |
Author(s) | Sinambari, Gh. Reza |
Publication | Wiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2023. |
Description | XIX, 302 p. 216 illus., 148 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This technical book helps the design engineer and acoustician to understand the noise development of machines and systems in a comprehensible way, based on an acoustic weak point analysis. It is essential to distinguish between airborne and structure-borne sound radiation. This knowledge enables the designer to develop targeted primary and secondary noise reduction measures. Selected application examples from practice support the user in developing his own ideas for the implementation of product-related noise reduction. The content - Physical principles of the generation, transmission and radiation of machine noise - Mechanisms of noise generation - Measurement techniques - Various noise reduction options for primary and secondary measures - Field-tested application examples The target groups - Engineers, plant designers and acousticians involved in primary, secondary and design noise abatement. - Students of mechanical engineering, process engineering and technical physics at technical colleges, universities and universities of applied sciences. The author Professor Dr.-Ing. Gh. Reza Sinambari taught, among other things, the subjects of sound and vibration protection, emission technology acoustics and construction acoustics at the FH Bingen. He was managing director of the company IBS, Ingenieurb??ro f??r Schall- und Schwingungstechnik GmbH, Frankenthal, for approx. 27 years, where he currently works as a consultant. Title | Slopes and Levels : Spice Models to Simulate Vintage Op-Amp Noise |
Author(s) | Vogel, Burkhard |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XXX, 333 p. 337 illus., 175 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book features an extensive index and all Mathcad worksheets. Vinyl is back, tubes/valves are back, on the high-end field SMD-free analog amplification surpasses digitalized chains, and top microphone manufacturers still set on good old op-amps or on fully discrete BJT, FET, and/or tube-driven amplifiers. There is only one problem that is not satisfyingly well solved by the manufacturers: It is the noise production of the active components and the useful reflection in simulation tools, in tables or graphs of the datasheets/data books. Nowadays, mostly surrounded by many digital helping tools, it makes sense using them???also by analog aficionados. It saves cost and time simulating first before spending money. Presented in this book the software tool LTSpice which is the free software solution from Linear Technology (today Analog Devices) that could also be used by full analog lovers to simulate the noise production of their amplifier design. All we need is the right creation approach to develop simulation models for the active components. Inter alia this is already done for tubes and BJTs in the 2nd editions of my ???How to Gain Gain??? and ???Balanced Phono-Amps??? books. For op-amps, the missing approaches are presented in the book on hand. It cannot be denied that mathematical software like Mathcad is extremely helpful to find the right equations for graphically presented noise curves which we can find in the literature. Nevertheless, it also works well with other types of math software to fulfill the parameter needs of the here presented modeling approaches for the input referred voltage and current noise of???not only???excellent sounding vintage op-amps, applicable in the audio range from 1 Hz to 100 kHz |

Title | Loudspeaker Physics and Forced Vibration |
Author(s) | Watkins, William H |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XIX, 130 p. 54 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is a study of the workings of dynamic loudspeakers and dynamically forced vibration. With its wealth of practical observations and real-life examples, this work will prove invaluable to the practicing motor design or loudspeaker design engineer, as well as researchers and students in electroacoustics. The book is based on a lifetime???s accumulated knowledge by acclaimed speaker designer William H. (Bill) Watkins. It differs from the usual tone of most technical books on this subject by initially presenting, and analyzing in full, the function of each key parameter of a reference dynamic loudspeaker. Each parameter???s value is then calculated and also confirmed via lab measurements to vividly illustrate all energy-transduction facets of loudspeaker operation and the forced vibration. This presentation style makes the analysis both more engaging, intuitive, and easier to comprehend compared to most previous works in the field. The principles of this book apply to all direct reciprocating motors, not just those in a dynamic loudspeaker. Unique to the book is an entire chapter dedicated to the discussion of back-EMF voltage, discussed from several technical points of view and analyzed in depth as related to the dynamic transfer of energy between the mechanical and electrical domains. Another unique feature is a detailed discussion of Watkins??? patented dual-motor concept to achieve high dynamic speaker performance in the region of its low-frequency resonance |

Title | Acoustic Guitar Design |
Author(s) | French, Richard Mark |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XIII, 347 p. 1 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is for experienced luthiers and guitar designers in the industry, novice builders wishing to improve their designs, and guitar owners interested in knowing more about their instruments. It includes the most important technical information gathered from many sources, including the academic literature and the author???s own work, presented here in a clear, actionable form with a minimum of mathematics. The book begins with a historical survey on how important features of the acoustic guitar evolved over centuries. The review leads up to a chapter focusing on three iconic instruments that represent the most important types of acoustic guitars: classical, steel string flat top and archtop. As the guitar market is so strongly conditioned by familiar, traditional instruments, a successful builder must have a thorough working understanding of the most important designs to underpin their own work. Through this volume, Professor French lays out the design process and collects detailed information in one convenient source. Luthiers quite often compile notebooks of measurements, part numbers, specific design features and other details they routinely need. This book organizes much of that information, with tables of dimensions, material properties, and other details in one essential final chapter. The book also features concise side bar contributions by top guitar designers and builders including Tim Shaw, Chief Engineer - Guitars at Fender Music; and Andy Powers, Master Guitar Designer and Partner at Taylor Guitars |
