Title | Molecular and Cellular Signaling |
Author(s) | Beckerman, Martin |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2005. |
Description | XXXIV, 582 p. 227 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | A small number of signaling pathways, no more than a dozen or so, form a control layer that is responsible for all signaling in and between cells of the human body. The signaling proteins belonging to the control layer determine what kinds of cells are made during development and how they function during adult life. Malfunctions in the proteins belonging to the control layer are responsible for a host of human diseases ranging from neurological disorders to cancers. Most drugs target components in the control layer, and difficulties in drug design are intimately related to the architecture of the control layer. Molecular and Cellular Signaling provides an introduction to molecular and cellular signaling in biological systems with an emphasis on the underlying physical principles. The text is aimed at upper-level undergraduates, graduate students and individuals in medicine and pharmacology interested in broadening their understanding of how cells regulate and coordinate their core activities and how diseases arise when these regulatory systems malfunction, as well as those in chemistry, physics and computer science interested in pursuing careers in biological and medical physics, bioinformatics and systems biology. To that end, the book includes background information and review sections, and chapters on signaling in the immune, endocrine (hormonal) and nervous systems. It has chapters on cancer, apoptosis and gene regulation, and contains chapters on bacteria and viruses. In those chapters not specifically devoted to pathogens, connections between diseases, drugs and signaling are made. Each chapter also features a problem set to facilitate further discussion and understanding. Title | Anthropometry and Biomechanics : Theory and Application |
Author(s) | Easterby, Ronald |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1982. |
Description | X, 328 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Assessment of the physical dimensions of the human body and application of this knowledge to the design of tools, equip?? ment, and work are certainly among the oldest arts and sciences. It would be an easy task if all anthropometric dimensions, of all people, would follow a general rule. Thus, philosophers and artists embedded their ideas about the most aesthetic proportions into ideal schemes of perfect proportions. "Golden sections" were developed in ancient India, China, Egypt, and Greece, and more recently by Leonardo DaVinci, or Albrecht Durer. However, such canons are fictive since actual human dimensions and proportions vary greatly among individuals. The different physical appearances often have been associated with mental, physiological and behavioral characteristics of the individuals. Hypocrates (about 460-377 BC) taught that there are four temperaments (actually, body fluids) represented by four body types. The psychiatrist Ernst Kretchmer (1888-1964) proposed that three typical somatotypes (pyknic, athletic, aesthenic) could reflect human character traits. Since the 1940's, W. H. Sheldon and his coworkers devised a system of three body physiques (endo-, meso-, ectomorphic). The classification was originally qualitative, and only recently has been developed to include actual measurements |

Title | Brain Function and Oscillations : Volume II: Integrative Brain Function. Neurophysiology and Cognitive Processes |
Author(s) | Ba??ar, Erol |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XXXIX, 476 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book establishes a brain theory based on neural oscillations with a temporal relation to a well-defined event. New findings about oscillations at the cellular level show striking parallels with EEG and MEG measurements. The authors embrace both the level of single neurons and that of the brain as a whole, showing how this approach advances our knowledge about the functional significance of the brain's electrical activity. They are related to sensory and cognitive tasks, leading towards an "integrative neurophysiology". The book will appeal to scientists and graduate students. This two-volume treatise has the special features that: - powerful mathematical algorithms are used; - concepts of synergetics, synchronization of cell assemblies provide a new theory of evoked potentials; - the EEG frequencies are considered as a type of alphabet of brain function; - based on the results described, brain oscillations are correlated with multiple functions, including sensory registration, perception, movement and cognitive processes related to attention, learning and memory; - the superposition principle of event-related oscillations and brain Feynmann diagrams are introduced as metaphors from quantum theory |

Title | Laser Systems for Photobiology and Photomedicine |
Author(s) | Chester, Arthur N;Martellucci, S;Verga Scheggi, A.M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1991. |
Description | 320 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the Proceedings of a two-week NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Laser Systems for Photobiology and Photomedicine", conducted from May 11 to 20, 1990 in Erice, Italy. This is the 15th annual course of the International School of Quantum Electronics (ISQE), organized under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. The application of lasers to medicine and surgery has made amazing progress since the last ISQE Course on this subject in 1983. The present Proceedings give a tutorial introduction to today's most important areas, as well as a review of current results by leading researchers. Among the possible approaches to a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Laser Systems for Photobiology and Photomedicine, we chose to emphasize the scientific and technological aspects of advanced laser systems when applied to laboratory and clinical tests. Since it is the policy of the School to stress the advanced scientific and techn??ological achievements in the field of Quantum Electronics, the Course broadly covers performance already achieved and potential applications |

Title | Biodynamics : Circulation |
Author(s) | Fung, Y. C |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1984. |
Description | XI, 404 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is a continuation ofmy Biomechanics. The first volume deals with the mechanical properties of living tissues. The present volume deals with the mechanics ofcirculation. A third volume willdeal with respiration, fluid balance, locomotion, growth, and strength. This volume is called Bio?? dynamics in order to distinguish it from the first volume. The same style is followed. My objective is to present the mechanical aspects ofphysiology in precise terms ofmechanics so that the subject can become as lucid as physics. The motivation of writing this series of books is, as I have said in the preface to the first volume, to bring biomechanics to students ofbioengineer?? ing, physiology, medicine, and mechanics. I have long felt a need for a set of books that willinform the students ofthe physiological and medical applica?? tions ofbiomechanics, and at the same time develop their training in mechan?? ics. In writing these books I have assumed that the reader already has some basic training in mechanics, to a level about equivalent to the first seven chapters of my First Course in Continuum Mechanics (Prentice Hall, 1977). The subject is then presented from the point of view of life science while mechanics is developed through a sequence of problems and examples. The main text reads like physiology, while the exercises are planned like a mechanics textbook. The instructor may filla dual role :teaching an essential branch of life science, and gradually developing the student's knowledge in mechanics |

Abstract Note | The book gives a comprehensive survey of the analytical treatment of MRI physics and engineering. It aims to bring the reader to a position to cope with the problems that arise when applying MRI to medical problems or when (sub)systems or sequences for new applications are designed. Special attention is paid to the treatment of intrinsic artifacts of the different sequences, which can be described in a mathematically uniform way for the different scan methods. The book contains many images, especially showing specific properties of the different scan methods. The methods discussed include RARE, GRACE, EPI, and Spiral Scan. The book is a textbook aimed at helping the reader reach the required level for independent research or development in the field of MRI applications or system design |
