TitleGrid Generation Methods
Author(s)Liseikin, Vladimir D
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXVI, 363 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is an introduction to structured and unstructured grid methods in scientific computing, addressing graduate students, scientists as well as practitioners. Basic local and integral grid quality measures are formulated and new approaches to mesh generation are reviewed. In addition to the content of the successful first edition, a more detailed and practice oriented description of monitor metrics in Beltrami and diffusion equations is given for generating adaptive numerical grids. Also, new techniques developed by the author are presented, in particular a technique based on the inverted form of Beltrami???s partial differential equations with respect to control metrics. This technique allows the generation of adaptive grids for a wide variety of computational physics problems, including grid clustering to given function values and gradients, grid alignment with given vector fields, and combinations thereof. Applications of geometric methods to the analysis of numerical grid behavior as well as grid generation based on the minimization of functionals of smoothness, conformality, orthogonality, energy, and alignment complete the second edition of this outstanding compendium on grid generation methods

TitleNonlinear MHD Waves and Turbulence : Proceedings of the Workshop Held in Nice, France, 1???4 December 1998
Author(s)Passot, Thierry;Sulem, Pierre-Louis
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionX, 385 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe workshop "Nonhnear MHD Waves and Turbulence" was held at the - servatoire de Nice, December 1-4, 1998 and brought together an international group of experts in plasma physics, fluid dynamics and applied mathematics. The aim of the meeting was to survey the current knowledge on two main topics: (i) propagation of plasma waves (like Alfven, whistler or ion-acoustic waves), their instabilities and the development of a nonlinear dynamics lea?? ding to solitonic structures, wave collapse or weak turbulence; (ii) turbulence in magnetohydrodynamic flows and its reduced description in the presence of a strong ambient magnetic fleld. As is well known, both aspects play an important role in various geophysical or astrophysical media such as the - gnetospheres of planets, the heliosphere, the solar wind, the solar corona, the interplanetary and interstellar media, etc. This volume, which includes expanded versions of oral contributions pre?? sented at this meeting, should be of interest for a large community of resear?? chers in space plasmas and nonlinear sciences. Special effort was made to put the new results into perspective and to provide a detailed literature review. A main motivation was the attempt to relate more closely the theoretical un?? derstanding of MHD waves and turbulence (both weak and strong) with the most recent observations in space plasmas. Some papers also bring interesting new insights into the evolution of hydrodynamic or magnetohydrodynamic structures, based on systematic asymptotic methods

TitleEUROSHOCK - Drag Reduction by Passive Shock Control : Results of the Project EUROSHOCK, AER2-CT92-0049 Supported by the European Union, 1993 ??? 1995
Author(s)Stanewsky, Egon;Delery, Jean;Fulker, John;Gei??ler, Wolfgang
PublicationWiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Vieweg+Teubner Verlag 2. Vieweg+Teubner Verlag, 1997.
DescriptionXVII, 414 p. 66 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIt has been recognized by the European Union (EU) that the survival of the Aeronautical Industries of Europe in the highly competitive World Aviation Market is strongly dependent on such factors as time-to-market of a new or derivative aircraft and on its manufacturing costs but also on the achievement of a competitive technological advantage by which an increased market share can be gained. Cooperative research is therefore continuously encouraged and co-financed by the European Union in order to strengthen the scientific and technological base of the Aeronautical Industries thus facilitating the future design and manufacture of civil air?? craft products and providing the technological edge needed for survival. Targets of research within Area 3, Aeronautics, of the Industrial and Materials Technology Programme (1991 - 1993) have been identified to be aircraft efficiency, cost effectiveness and environmental im?? pact. Concerning aircraft efficiency - relevant to the present research - a reduction in aircraft drag of 10010, a reduction in aircraft fuel consumption of 30010 and a reduction in airframe, en?? gine and system weight of 20% are envisaged. Meeting these objectives has, of course, also a strong positive impact on the environment. In order to further technology, the philosophy is to avoid spreading the available resources too thinly and rather concentrate on the feasibility demonstration of a limited number of tech?? nologies of high economic and industrial impact

TitleOrthogonal Polynomials : Theory and Practice
Author(s)Nevai, Paul
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1990.
Description488 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Orthogonal Polynomials and Their Applications" held at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. between May 22,1989 and June 3,1989. The Advanced Study Institute primarily concentrated on those aspects of the theory and practice of orthogonal polynomials which surfaced in the past decade when the theory of orthogonal polynomials started to experience an unparalleled growth. This progress started with Richard Askey's Regional Confer?? ence Lectures on "Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions" in 1975, and subsequent discoveries led to a substantial revaluation of one's perceptions as to the nature of orthogonal polynomials and their applicability. The recent popularity of orthogonal polynomials is only partially due to Louis de Branges's solution of the Bieberbach conjecture which uses an inequality of Askey and Gasper on Jacobi polynomials. The main reason lies in their wide applicability in areas such as Pade approximations, continued fractions, Tauberian theorems, numerical analysis, probability theory, mathematical statistics, scattering theory, nuclear physics, solid state physics, digital signal processing, electrical engineering, theoretical chemistry and so forth. This was emphasized and convincingly demonstrated during the presentations by both the principal speakers and the invited special lecturers. The main subjects of our Advanced Study Institute included complex orthogonal polynomials, signal processing, the recursion method, combinatorial interpretations of orthogonal polynomials, computational problems, potential theory, Pade approximations, Julia sets, special functions, quantum groups, weighted approximations, orthogonal polynomials associated with root systems, matrix orthogonal polynomials, operator theory and group representations

TitleParallel Numerical Algorithms
Author(s)Keyes, David E;Sameh, Ahmed;Venkatakrishnan, V
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionXI, 395 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this volume, designed for computational scientists and engineers working on applications requiring the memories and processing rates of large-scale parallelism, leading algorithmicists survey their own field-defining contributions, together with enough historical and bibliographical perspective to permit working one's way to the frontiers. This book is distinguished from earlier surveys in parallel numerical algorithms by its extension of coverage beyond core linear algebraic methods into tools more directly associated with partial differential and integral equations - though still with an appealing generality - and by its focus on practical medium-granularity parallelism, approachable through traditional programming languages. Several of the authors used their invitation to participate as a chance to stand back and create a unified overview, which nonspecialists will appreciate

TitleGenerating Families in the Restricted Three-Body Problem
Author(s)Henon, Michel
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997.
DescriptionXI, 280 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe classical restricted problem of three bodies is of fundamental importance for its applications to astronomy and space navigation, and also as a simple model of a non-integrable Hamiltonian dynamical system. A central role is played by periodic orbits, of which a large number have been computed numerically. In this book an attempt is made to explain and organize this material through a systematic study of generating families, which are the limits of families of periodic orbits when the mass ratio of the two main bodies becomes vanishingly small. The most critical part is the study of bifurcations, where several families come together and it is necessary to determine how individual branches are joined. Many different cases must be distinguished and studied separately. Detailed recipes are given. Their use is illustrated by determining a number of generating families, associated with natural families of the restricted problem, and comparing them with numerical computations in the Earth-Moon and Sun-Jupiter case

TitleError Control and Adaptivity in Scientific Computing
Author(s)Bulgak, Haydar;Zenger, Christoph
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999.
DescriptionXVI, 354 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOne of the main ways by which we can understand complex processes is to create computerised numerical simulation models of them. Modern simulation tools are not used only by experts, however, and reliability has therefore become an important issue, meaning that it is not sufficient for a simulation package merely to print out some numbers, claiming them to be the desired results. An estimate of the associated error is also needed. The errors may derive from many sources: errors in the model, errors in discretization, rounding errors, etc. Unfortunately, this situation does not obtain for current packages and there is a great deal of room for improvement. Only if the error can be estimated is it possible to do something to reduce it. The contributions in this book cover many aspects of the subject, the main topics being error estimates and error control in numerical linear algebra algorithms (closely related to the concept of condition numbers), interval arithmetic and adaptivity for continuous models
