Title | Physics of Liquid Matter: Modern Problems : Proceedings, Kyiv, Ukraine, 23-27 May 2014 |
Author(s) | Bulavin, Leonid;Lebovka, Nikolai |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2015. |
Description | XI, 374 p. 156 illus., 115 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | These proceedings comprise invited and contributed papers presented at PLMMP-2014, addressing modern problems in the fields of liquids, solutions and confined systems, critical phenomena, as well as colloidal and biological systems. The book focuses on state-of-the-art developments in contemporary physics of liquid matter. The papers presented here are organized into four parts: (i) structure of liquids in confined systems, (ii) phase transitions, supercritical liquids and glasses, (iii) colloids, and (iv) medical and biological aspects and cover the most recent developments in the broader field of liquid state including interdisciplinary problems |

Title | X-Ray Scattering from Soft-Matter Thin Films : Materials Science and Basic Research |
Author(s) | Tolan, Metin |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | IX, 198 p. 28 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The properties of soft-matter thin films (e.g. liquid films, polymer coatings, Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers) nowadays play an important role in materials science. They are also very exciting with respect to fundamental questions: When liquids and polymers form thin films, they may be considered as trapped in a quasi-two-dimensional geometry. This confined geometry is expected to alter the properties and structures of these materials considerably. This volume is dedicated to the scattering of x-rays by soft-matter interfaces. X-ray scattering under grazing angles is the only tool for investigating these materials on atomic and mesoscopic length scales. A review of the field is presented with many examples |

Title | Physics of Planetary Rings : Celestial Mechanics of Continuous Media |
Author(s) | Fridman, Alexei M;Gorkavyi, Nikolai N |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XXI, 437 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Physics of Planetary Rings describes striking structures in the planetary rings of Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune. In Saturn, the rings are stratified into thousands of ringlets united in a complex hierarchical structure with spiral waves and gaps; in Uranus, they are compressed into narrow streams; and in Neptune, one observes a chain of clumps. This abundance of dynamical structures is the result of unique instabilities and the resonance action of satellites. The authors have made decisive contributions to research into collisional, collective and resonance phenomena in planetary rings. They correctly predicted the existence of unknown Uranian satellites prior to the Voyager 2 fly-by. The combination of a high quality description, interesting illustrations and a fascinating and natural presentation will make this book of great interest to a broad readership, including astronomers, physicists, mathematicians, students and amateur astronomers |

Title | Soft Matter Physics |
Author(s) | Daoud, Mohamed;Williams, Claudine E |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XVI, 320 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | What do colloids, fractals, liquid crystals, and polymers have in common? Nothing at first sight. Yet the distance scales, the energy transfers, the way these objects react to an external field are very similar. For the first time, this book offers an introduction to the physics of these soft materials in one single volume. A variety of experiments and concepts are presented, including the phenomena of capillarity and wetting, fractals, small volumes and large surfaces, colloids, surfactants, giant micelles and fluid membranes, polymers, and liquid crystals. Each chapter is written by experts in the field with the aim of making the book accessible to the widest possible scientific audience: graduate students, lecturers, and research scientists in physics, chemistry, and other disciplines. Nobel Prize winner Pierre-Gilles de Gennes inspired this book and has written a foreword |
