Title | Frustrated Materials and Ferroic Glasses |
Author(s) | Lookman, Turab;Ren, Xiaobing |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XIII, 276 p. 153 illus., 133 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides a comprehensive introduction to ferroics and frustrated materials. Ferroics comprise a range of materials classes with functionalities such as magnetism, polarization, and orbital degrees of freedom and strain. Frustration, due to geometrical constraints, and disorder, due to chemical and/or structural inhomogeneities, can lead to glassy behavior, which has either been directly observed or inferred in a range of materials classes from model systems such as artificial spin ice, shape memory alloys, and ferroelectrics to electronically functional materials such as manganites. Interesting and unusual properties are found to be associated with these glasses and have potential for novel applications. Just as in prototypical spin glass and structural glasses, the elements of frustration and disorder lead to non-ergodocity, history dependence, frequency dependent relaxation behavior, and the presence of inhomogeneous nano clusters or domains. In addition, there are new states of matter, such as spin ice; however, it is still an open question as to whether these systems belong to the same family or universality class. The purpose of this work is to collect in a single volume the range of materials systems with differing functionalities that show many of the common characteristics of geometrical frustration, where interacting degrees of freedom do not fit in a lattice or medium, and glassy behavior is accompanied by additional presence of disorder. The chapters are written by experts in their fields and span experiment and theory, as well as simulations. Frustrated Materials and Ferroic Glasses will be of interest to a wide range of readers in condensed matter physics and materials science. Brings together experts in glasses, geometrical frustration, and functional materials Covers theory, experiment, and simulations of ferroics Features an easy-to-read introduction in each chapter to make specialized topics accessible to a broad readership in condensed matter physics and materials science |

Author(s) | Yatsui, Takashi |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XV, 205 p. 51 illus., 15 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents important topics in nanophotonics in review-style chapters written by world leading scientists. The book sketches the history of dressed photon science and technology and explains why advanced theories of dressed photons are required. To meet this requirement, the recent results of theoretical studies and the theory of dressed photons are displayed by modifying the conventional electromagnetic theory. The classical theoretical model of spatiotemporal vortex dynamics is explained by treating the dressed photon as a space-like virtual photon. Also discussed in the book is the energy transfer of dressed photons, based on a quantum walk model and a quantum mechanical measurement process of dressed photons for connecting the nano- and macro-systems. Dressed photons are explained as quantum fields by characterizing them in momentum space. |

Title | Nanomechanics in van der Waals Heterostructures |
Author(s) | Holwill, Matthew |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XVII, 97 p. 50 illus., 49 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Micro/nano-mechanical systems are a crucial part of the modern world providing a plethora of sensing and actuation functionalities used in everything from the largest cargo ships to the smallest hand-held electronics; from the most advanced scientific and medical equipment to the simplest household items. Over the past few decades, the processes used to produce these devices have improved, supporting dramatic reductions in size, but there are fundamental limits to this trend that require a new production paradigm. The 2004 discovery of graphene ushered in a new era of condensed matter physics research, that of two-dimensional materials. Being only a few atomic layers thick, this new class of materials exhibit unprecedented mechanical strength and flexibility and can couple to electric, magnetic and optical signals. Additionally, they can be combined to form van der Waals heterostructures in an almost limitless number of ways. They are thus ideal candidates to reduce the size and extend the capabilities of traditional micro/nano-mechanical systems and are poised to redefine the technological sphere. This thesis attempts to develop the framework and protocols required to produce and characterise micro/nano-mechanical devices made from two-dimensional materials. Graphene and its insulating analogue, hexagonal boron nitride, are the most widely studied materials and their heterostructures are used as the test-bed for potential device architectures and capabilities. Interlayer friction, electro-mechanical actuation and surface reconstruction are some of the key phenomena investigated in this work |

Title | Nanotechnology Research Directions for Societal Needs in 2020 : Retrospective and Outlook |
Author(s) | Roco, Mihail C;Mirkin, Chad A;Hersam, Mark C |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2011. |
Description | XLI, 690 p. 214 illus., 190 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume presents a comprehensive perspective on the global scientific, technological, and societal impact of nanotechnology since 2000, and explores the opportunities and research directions in the next decade to 2020.?? The vision for the future of nanotechnology presented here draws on scientific insights from U.S. experts in the field, examinations of lessons learned, and international perspectives shared by participants from 35 countries in a series of high-level workshops organized by??Mike Roco of the National Science Foundation (NSF), along with a team of American co-hosts that includes Chad Mirkin, Mark Hersam, Evelyn Hu, and several other eminent U.S. scientists.?? The study performed in support of the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) aims to redefine the R&D goals for nanoscale science and engineering integration and to establish nanotechnology as a general-purpose technology in the next decade. It intends to provide decision makers in academia, industry, and government with a nanotechnology community perspective of productive and responsible paths forward for nanotechnology R&D. ???Nanotechnology Research Directions for Societal Needs in 2020 is a wonderful piece of work. This book reflects the bible for nanotechnology for the next decades for the whole world.?? Well done.????? (Prof. Marcel van de Voorde, Delft University of Technology, Delft, November 2010) "This book provides a comprehensive vision and an overarching roadmap for the nanotechnology community. It comes at a great time as we move into the next decade of nano-enabled commercialization."?? (Vincent Caprio, Executive Director, NanoBusiness Commercialization Association, November 2010). ???The National Nanotechnology Initiative story could provide a useful case study for newer research efforts into fields such as synthetic biology, renewable energy or adaptation to climate change.????? (David Rejeski, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, September 2010) ???Some of these [nanotechnology] research goals will take 20 or more years to achieve. But that is why there is such a critical role for the federal government.??? (President Bill Clinton, Speech announcing NNI at Caltech, January 2000) |

Title | Quantum Physics in the Nanoworld : Schr??dinger's Cat and the Dwarfs |
Author(s) | L??th, Hans |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013. |
Description | XII, 466 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The book deals with all essential aspects of non-relativistic quantum physics up to the quantization of fields. In contrast to common textbooks of quantum mechanics, modern experiments are described both for the purpose of foundation of the theory and in relation to recent applications. In this respect applications to nano-electronics as well as the realization of quantum-bits are presented and discussed. Furthermore, links are made to other important research fields and applications, such as elementary particle physics, solid state physics and nuclear magnetic resonance tomography in medicine. Even though the representation of the topics is largely performed in terms of Dirac??s bra-ket notation and by use of commutator algebra, the concrete description of the physical basis and the corresponding theoretical concepts are emphasized. Because of little requirement of complex mathematics, the book is suitable as an introduction into quantum physics, not only for physicists but also for chemists, biologists, engineers, computer scientists and even for philosophers as far as they are interested in natural philosophy and epistomology |
