TitleAcoustic Waves in Periodic Structures, Metamaterials, and Porous Media : From Fundamentals to Industrial Applications
Author(s)Jim??nez, No??;Umnova, Olga;Groby, Jean-Philippe
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVII, 443 p. 180 illus., 108 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book delivers a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of practical applications of metamaterials, structured media, and conventional porous materials. With increasing levels of urbanization, a growing demand for motorized transport, and inefficient urban planning, environmental noise exposure is rapidly becoming a pressing societal and health concern. Phononic and sonic crystals, acoustic metamaterials, and metasurfaces can revolutionize noise and vibration control and, in many cases, replace traditional porous materials for these applications. In this collection of contributed chapters, a group of international researchers reviews the essentials of acoustic wave propagation in metamaterials and porous absorbers with viscothermal losses, as well as the most recent advances in the design of acoustic metamaterial absorbers. The book features a detailed theoretical introduction describing commonly used modelling techniques such as plane wave expansion, multiple scattering theory, and the transfer matrix method. The following chapters give a detailed consideration of acoustic wave propagation in viscothermal fluids and porous media, and the extension of this theory to non-local models for fluid saturated metamaterials, along with a description of the relevant numerical methods. Finally, the book reviews a range of practical industrial applications, making it especially attractive as a white book targeted at the building, automotive, and aeronautic industries

TitleModern Singular Spectral-Based Denoising and Filtering Techniques for 2D and 3D Reflection Seismic Data
Author(s)Tiwari, R. K;Rekapalli, R
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVI, 157 p. 104 illus., 43 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses the latest advances in singular spectrum-based algorithms for seismic data processing, providing an update on recent developments in this field. Over the past few decades, researchers have extensively studied the application of the singular spectrum-based time and frequency domain eigen image methods, singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and multichannel SSA for various geophysical data. This book addresses seismic reflection signals, which represent the amalgamated signals of several unwanted signals/noises, such as ground roll, diffractions etc. Decomposition of such non-stationary and erratic field data is one of the multifaceted tasks in seismic data processing. This volume also includes comprehensive methodological and parametric descriptions, testing on appropriately generated synthetic data, as well as comparisons between time and frequency domain algorithms and their applications to the field data on 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D data sets. Lastly, it features an exclusive chapter with MATLAB coding for SSA

TitleVibro-Acoustics, Volume 2
Author(s)Nilsson, Anders;Liu, Bilong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2016.
DescriptionX, 452 p. 213 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis three-volume book gives a thorough and comprehensive presentation of vibration and acoustic theories. Different from traditional textbooks which typically deal with some aspects of either acoustic or vibration problems, it is unique of this book to combine those two correlated subjects together. Moreover, it provides fundamental analysis and mathematical descriptions for several crucial phenomena of Vibro-Acoustics which are quite useful in noise reduction, including how structures are excited, energy flows from an excitation point to a sound radiating surface, and finally how a structure radiates noise to a surrounding fluid. Many measurement results included in the text make the reading interesting and informative. Problems/questions are listed at the end of each chapter and the solutions are provided. This will help the readers to understand the topics of Vibro-Acoustics more deeply. The book should be of interest to anyone interested in sound and vibration, vehicle acoustics, ship acoustics and interior aircraft noise. This is the second volume, and covers the following topics: Hamilton???s principle and some other variational methods, Structural coupling between simple systems including resilient mountings, Waves in fluids, Fluid structure interaction and radiation of sound to light and heavy fluids, Sound transmission loss of panels and shells, Waveguides and sandwich structures, Random and TBL excitation of plates and shells, Energy flow in built up structures

TitleComputational Atmospheric Acoustics
Author(s)Salomons, E.M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2001.
DescriptionXI, 335 p : online resource
Abstract NoteNoise from cars, trains, and aeroplanes can be heard at large distances from the source. Accurate predictions of the loudness of the noise require accurate computations of sound propagation in the atmosphere. This book describes models that can be used for these computations. The models take into account complex effects of the atmosphere and the ground surface on sound waves, including the effects of wind and temperature distributions, atmospheric turbulence, irregular terrain, and noise barriers. The main text of the book focuses on physical effects in atmospheric acoustics. The effects are illustrated by many numerical examples. The main text requires a very limited mathematical background from the reader; detailed mathematical descriptions of the models, developed from the basic principles of acoustics, are presented in appendices. Models for moving media are compared with models that are based on the effective sound speed approach. Both two-dimensional models and three-dimensional models are presented. As meteorological effects play an important role in atmospheric acoustics, selected topics from boundary layer meteorology and the theory of turbulence are also presented

TitleAcoustics, Information, and Communication : Memorial Volume in Honor of Manfred R. Schroeder
Author(s)Xiang, Ning;Sessler, Gerhard M
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXVIII, 461 p. 226 illus., 91 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explores the life and scientific legacy of Manfred Schroeder through personal reflections, scientific essays, and Schroeder???s own memoirs. Reflecting the wide range of Schroeder???s activities, the first part of the book contains thirteen articles written by his colleagues and former students. Topics discussed include his early, pioneering contributions to the understanding of statistical room acoustics and to the measurement of reverberation time; his introduction of digital signal processing methods into acoustics; his use of ray tracing methods to study sound decay in rooms; and his achievements in echo and feedback suppression and in noise reduction. Other chapters cover his seminal research in speech processing including the use of predictive coding to reduce audio bandwidth which led to various code-excited linear prediction schemes, today used extensively for speech coding. Several chapters discuss Schroeder???s work in low-peak factor signals, number theory, and maximum-length sequences with key applications in hearing research, diffraction gratings, artificial reverberators, and de-correlation techniques for enhancing subjective envelopment in surround sound. In style, the articles range from truly scientific to conversationally personal. In all contributions, the relationship between the current research presented and Manfred Schroeder???s own fields of interest is, in general, evident. The second part of the book consists of Schroeder???s own memoirs, written over the final decade of his life. These recollections shed light on many aspects not only of Schroeder???s life but also on that of many of his colleagues, friends, and contemporaries. They portray political, social, and scientific events over a period that extends from pre-war to the present. These memoirs, written in an inimitable and witty style, are full of information, entertaining, and fun to read, providing key insight into the life and work of one of the greatest acousticians of the 20th century. Reflects on the life, work, and legacy of one of the greatest acousticians of the 20th century Features articles by leading researchers on the implications of Schroeder???s research today Covers a wide range of topics, from room acoustics, noise reduction, physical acoustics, and underwater acoustics to transducers, speech signal processing, and number-theory applications
