TitleOld and New Questions in Physics, Cosmology, Philosophy, and Theoretical Biology : Essays in Honor of Wolfgang Yourgrau
Author(s)Van der Merwe, Alwyn
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionXV, 920 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSimply to say that this is a collection of essays in honor of the late Wolfgang Yourgrau (1908-1979) is to explain, at least for-the obviously many-"insiders," the unusually wide-ranging title of the present volume. In a Foreword to the Proceedings of the First International Colloquium (focusing on logic, physical reality, and history), held at the University of Denver in May of 1966 under their leadership, Wolfgang Y ourgrau and Allen Breck wrote, in an oblique reference to C. P. Snow: "Indeed there are not two or three or four cultures: there is only one culture; our generation has lost its awareness of this . . . . Historians, logicians, physicists-all are banded in one common enterprise, namely in their des ire to weave an enlightened fabric of human knowledge. " Augment, if you will, the foregoing categories of scholars with biologists, philos?? ophers, cosmologists, and theologians-all of whom, in addition to historians, Wolf?? gang Yourgrau, by dint of his inextinguishable enthusiasm and charismatic qualities, assembled in Denver for the Second and Third International Colloquia (in 1967 and 1974, respectively)-and a few other besides, and one arrives at a statement of the credo wh ich Y ourgrau not only professed, but consistently exemplified throughout his adult life

TitleFrontiers of Physics: 1900???1911 : Selected Essays
Author(s)MILLER
PublicationBoston, MA, 1. Birkh??user Boston 2. Imprint: Birkh??user, 1986.
DescriptionXXVI, 294 p : online resource
Abstract NoteP. W. Bridgman and the Special Theory oj Relativity Ey W. Bridgman wrote A S,phi, ticati< him" (1962) for the reader "who feels the need to stand back a little for a critical scrutiny of what he has really got" (SP, p. 3). * This was his personal trademark as physicist and philoso?? pher and it is present everywhere in Bridgman's precis of special relativity theory. The reissue of Sophisticate's Primer is particularly wel?? come for it exhibits a quest for clarity in foundations in the style of Ernst Mach and Henri Poincare, in whose philo- ??? N.B. Papers and books are here cited as follows. Bridgman (1927) refers to Bridgman's book The Logic of Modern Physics in the bibliography. Cross-references to Sophisticate's Primer are indicated with the code (SP, p. "'). Bridgman's extant manuscripts are on deposit at the Harvard University Archives, and here cited by date, for example (MS 2 August 1959, p .... ). Some of the manuscripts were written over a period of days, with sequential paging, with the actual dates indicated. Full citations are given in the bibliography. I am grateful to the Harvard University Archives for permission to quote from these materials, and to Bridgman's daughter, Mrs. Jane Koopman, for permitting me to quote from the draft manuscripts of Sophisticate's Primer, which will be deposited in the Harvard Archives. Reprinted from P. W. Bridgman. Sophisticate's Primer of Relativity, Second Edition. Middletown, CT: Wesleyan University Press, 1983

TitleApplication of Short-Term Bioassays in the Fractionation and Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures
Author(s)Waters, Michael D
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1979.
DescriptionXIII, 588 p : online resource
Abstract Notevi Williamsburg, Virginia, February 21-23, 1978. This symposium was sponsored by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Energy Minerals and Industry, Washington, DC, and Office of Health and Ecological Effects, Health Effects Re?? search Laboratory, Biochemistry Branch, Research Triangle Park, NC. The symposium consisted of 24 formal presentations that amplify the three major topics discussed during the symposium: an overview of short-term bioassay systems; current methodology involving the collection and chemical analysis of environmental samples; and current research in?? volving the use of short-term bioassays in the fractionation and analysis of complex environmental mixtures. The purpose of this symposium was to present the state-of-the-art tech?? niques in bioassay and chemical analysis as applied to com?? plex mixtures and to foster continued advancement of this important area. Complex mixtures discussed include ambient air and water, waste water, drinking water, shale oil, syn?? thetic fuels, automobile exhaust, diesel particulate, coal fly ash, cigarette smoke condensates, and food products. It is our hope that this volume will serve as a refer?? ence to catalyze and encourage further research in this field. Michael D. Waters, Ph. D. Stephen Nesnow, Ph. D. vii Acknowledgment We would like to thank Gerald Rausa, Office of Energy Minerals and Industry, for his advice, encouragement, and support of this program. We would also like to express our appreciation to Wendy A. Martin, Peter A. Murphy, and David F. Wright of Kappa Systems, Inc

TitleHydrocarbons and Halogenated Hydrocarbons in the Aquatic Environment
Author(s)MacKay, D;Afghan, B.K
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1980.
DescriptionXIII, 593 p. 37 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains papers selected from those presented at the International Symposium on the Analysis of Hydrocarbons and Halogenated Hydrocarbons in the Aquatic Environment, May 23-25, 1978. The Symposium was organized by the National Water Research Institute of Environment Canada and the Institute for Environmental Studies of the University of Toronto. The purpose of the Symposium and of this volume was to bring together information on the analyses, behaviour and effects of hydro?? carbons and halogenated hydrocarbons on the aquatic environment. This class of contaminants presents many difficult analytical pro?? blems, and to a large extent our ability to identify environmental problems and assess their severity, depends on the availability of proved analytical techniques. By exposing workers in this field to the techniques and results of others we hope that progress can be made towards solving the many problems caused by these substances. The papers in this volume are divided into five categories: two plenary session addresses given by J.P. Bruce and O. Hutzinger, 11 papers describing quantitative analytical results, 12 papers on analytical methods, 9 papers on incidence, monitoring and pathways; and finally, 13 papers on drinking water, health and biological effects. We were fortunate in having the support of the many organizations and individuals listed after this preface. In particular we thank B.F. Scott and R. Knechtel for their help in organizing the Symposium, S. Paterson, C. Straka, B. Reuber, A. Bobra, R. Wan, S. Austin, G.E

TitleTurbulent Fluxes Through the Sea Surface, Wave Dynamics, and Prediction
Author(s)Favre, A
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1978.
DescriptionXIII, 677 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA primary aim of the NATO Science Committee since its estab?? lishment in 1958 has been to?? further international scientific co?? operation among scientists from the member countries of the Alliance. Almost all fields of basic science have received sub?? stantial support for the purposes of enhancing exchange of inform?? ation, providing opportunities for advanced instruction and collaborative research. Up to 1977, more than 10,000 fellowships have been awarded to allow scientists to complete their scientific education in another country and more than 1,500 joint research projects involving scientists in at least two different countries per project have been financed by the Committee. In addition, more than 800 advanced study institutes have been held under NATO auspices which have allowed more than sixty thousand scientists to get together to hear leading scientists lecture on advanced research topics on the frontier of research of many disciplines and to discuss the most recent results of their research activi?? ties. The Science Committee also identifies specific areas as deserving special encouragement or preferential support for limited periods. A variety of mechanisms - research grants, study visits, conferences, etc. - is utilized to stimulate greater international activity. This effort is embodied in several individual programmes, each guided by a special programme panel of internationally eminent experts. Air-sea interaction is one of these programmes

TitleThe Breakdown and Restoration of Ecosystems : Proceedings of the Conference on the Rehabilitation of Severely Damaged Land and Freshwater Ecosystems
Author(s)Holdgate, M.W;Woodman, M.J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1978.
Description496 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the papers presented at a conference on "The rehabilitation of severely damaged land and freshwater eco?? systems in temperate zones", held at Reykjavik, Iceland, from 4th to 11th July, 1976. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Ecosciences Panel of the N.A.T.O. Science Committee, and the organising expenses and greater part of the expenses of the speakers and chairmen were provided by N.A.T.O. The scientific programme was planned by M. W. Holdgate and M. J. Woodman, in consultation with numerous colleagues, and especially with the Administrative Director of the Conference in Iceland, Dr. Sturla Fridriksson. Iceland proved a particularly suitable location for such a Conference. Geologically, it is one of the youngest countries 1n the world, owing its origin to the up-welling of volcanic rock along the spreading zone of the mid-Atlantic ridge within the past 20 million years. Its structure, northern oceanic situation, recent glaciation and continuing volcanic activity make it distinct as a habitat and have given it a flora and fauna of especial interest. It is also a land of great natural beauty with its ice caps, waterfalls, volcanic landforms, geothermal features and dramatic coasts. In addition, its ecosystems have proved except?? ionally vulnerable to man's impact and it presents the kind of problem with which the Conference was concerned in an acute form

TitleEnergy for the Year 2000
Author(s)Wilson, Richard
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1980.
Description401 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Third International School on Energetics was devoted to the subject of Energy for the Year 2000. By this title we hoped to avoid discussion of such matters as the role of OPEC in raising oil prices. In one sense, therefore, our task was made easier; we could merely look into our crystal balls. The choice of lecturers was made with the idea that no reason?? able source of energy can be overlooked. We omitted detailed lectures on oil and natural gas because we took it as a given fact that we would continue to use as much of these fuels as we can get at a reasonable price. To give us an overview we started the School by discussing U.S. energy policy and possible U.S. energy scenarios. As might be ex?? pected, there was some disagreement about the current energy program in the U.S., but little disagreement about the facts presented

TitleThe Response of Nuclei under Extreme Conditions
Author(s)Broglia, R.A;Bertsch, G.F
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1988.
DescriptionX, 412 p. 137 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn recent years, a new field of nuclear research has been opened through the possibility of studying nuclei wi\h very large values of angular momentum, temperature, pressure and number of particles. This development has been closely associated with heavy ion reactions, since collisions between two heavy nuclei are especially effective in producing metastable compound systems with large angular momentum, and in transferring energy which is distributed over the whole nuclear volume. Under the strain of temperature and of the Coriolis and centrifugal forces, the nucleus displays structural changes which can be interpreted in terms of pairing and shape phase transit?? ions. This was the subject of the lectures of J. D. Garrett, P. J. Twin and S. Levit. While the rotational motion is, at zero temperature un?? damped, the width of giant resonances indicate that the nucleus only oscillates through few periods before the motion is damp?? ed by particle decay, and through coupling to the compound nucleus. Temperature and angular momentum influence in an im?? portant way the properties of both giant resonances and rotatio?? nal motion. These subjects were developed by K. Snover, and by P. F. Bortignon and R. A. Broglia, as well as by A. Bracco, A. Dellafiore and F. Matera

TitleWomen and the World of Work
Author(s)Hoiberg, Anne
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1982.
DescriptionXIII, 390 p. 6 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteFrom August 4 to 8, 1980, the Science Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sponsored the symposium, "Women and the World of Work," which was held at the Hotel Sintra Estoril in the coastal area south of Lisbon, Portugal. This symposium hatl been "in progress" since 1977 when the idea to prepare a proposal for a NATO?? sponsored symposium on the topic of women and the military was first suggested by Dr. Walter Wilkins, then Scientific Director of the Naval Health Research Center, San Diego, California. At that time and during the previous 5 years, increasing numbers of women were being recruited into military service not only in the United States but also in several NATO-allied countries. Few research projects on the utilization of women in the military had been reported in the scientific literature with the exception of work conducted at the University of Chicago and Naval Health Research Center. Several investigators, however, were identified who had recently initiated research in this area-and who expressed interest in participating in the proposed symposium. A few months after submitting the proposal, Dr. B. A. Bayraktar, Director of the Scientific Affairs Division responded that the members of the Science Committee recommended the deletion of those segments of the tentative program which pertained to women and the military. The reason given for this suggested change was that the topic chosen was similar to the theme of other recent international conferences

TitleTutorials on Motion Perception
Author(s)Wertheim, Alexander H
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1982.
Description263 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFrom August 24-29, 1980 the international "Symposium on the Study of Motion Perception; Recent Developments and Applications", sponsored by NATO and organized by the editors of this book, was held in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. The meeting was attended by about eighty scholars, including psychologists, neurologists, physicists and other scientists, from fourteen different countries. During the symposium some fifty research papers were presented and a series of tutorial review papers were read and discussed. The research presentations have been published in a special issue of the international journal of psychonomics "Acta Psychologica" (Vol. 48, 1981). The present book is a compilation of the tutorial papers. The tutorials were arranged around early versions of the chapters now appearing in this book. The long discussions at the Veldhoven tutorial sessions resulted in extensive revisions of the texts prior to this publication. Unfortunately this led to a delay in publication, but we feel that this was justified by a greater depth of understanding which, in our opinion, has significantly increased the quality of the book. As they now stand, the chapters cover most of the issues relevant to the study of motion perception. Also they clearly reflect the intensive exchange of knowledge that took place during the symposium. As such we think that this book can be used both as an advanced text for students and scientists alike and as a comprehensive reference source
