| Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
| Description | XX, 436 p : online resource |
| Abstract Note | Thin Films on Glass. This book is one of a series reporting on international research and development activities conducted by the Schott Group companies. With the series Schott aims to provide an overview of its activites for scientists, engineers, and managers from all branches of industry worldwide where glass and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends relating to the subject treated. This volume describes the development of active and passive thin films on glass at Schott. Design strategies, the use of conventional and newly developed production technologies of thin films on glass, and the application of characterization methods for the structure of thin films and their properties are reported. Several examples illustrate how the the best suited film materials and deposition and processing parameters. may be selected. Particular chapters treat the topics of flip-flop layers (coatings consisting of very thin high- and low-index layers), wave-guiding films, Rugate filters and gradient devices, optical transducers, laser coatings, cold light mirrors, sol-gel solutions for thin film production with dip coating processes, the coating of window panes with solar reflection coatings, and rear-view mirrors for cars. The book is conceived as a monograph. The individual chapters, however, are written by leading Schott experts on the corresponding subjects. In all the chapters, tables and examples are chosen to introduce the reader to thin film science and technology. Numerous references are given to more detailed literature |

| Abstract Note | This book is one of a series reporting on international research and development activities conducted by the Schott Group companies. With the series Schott aims to provide an overview of its activities for scientists, engineers, and managers from all branches of industry worldwide where glass and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends relating to the subject treated. This volume gives background knowledge about the difficult matter of electrochemical behaviour of glass melts and solid glasses, laying the foundations for - a sound understanding of physicochemical redox and ion transfer processes in solid or liquid glasses and the interpretation of experimental results; - control of production processes, including fining, interface reactions and thermodynamic equilibria of glass melts with refractories and the surrounding atmosphere; - the field-driven ion exchange between solutions and glasses or within electrochromic thin-film systems; - fundamentals and application of glass electrodes for pH measurements, as well as information about the presently ongoing redefinition by a IUPAC committee; - mechanisms responsible for glass corrosion; - the concept of optical basicity. The book is conceived as a monograph. The individual chapters, however, are written by experts from the Schott R & D department or their external partners in research. Many practical examples provide the reader with facts to study the various aspects of electrochemical processes in ion-conducting materials |

| Description | XVIII, 248 p. 156 illus., 33 illus. in color : online resource |
| Abstract Note | This book appears in the authoritative series reporting the international research and development activities conducted by the Schott group of companies. This series provides an overview of Schott's activities for scientists, engineers, and managers from all branches of industry worldwide in which glasses and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends relating to the subjects treated. This new extended edition describes the fundamental principles, the manufacturing process, and applications of low thermal expansion glass ceramics. The composition, structure, and stability of polycrystalline materials having a low thermal expansion are described, and it is shown how low thermal expansion glass ceramics can be manufactured from appropriately chosen glass compositions. Examples illustrate the formation of this type of glass ceramic by utilizing normal production processes together with controlled crystallization. Thus glass ceramics with thermal coefficients of expansion of less than 0.3 x 10(-6)K(-1) can be obtained. Even for the mass production of high-quality cooktop panels (Ceran??., oven windows, and other household appliances a high reproducibility of the properties is achieved. Special glass ceramics (Zerodur??. for technological and scientific applications such as high-precision optics or large astronomical mirrors are likewise discussed. The completely revised edition also features new sections on glass-ceramic applications, with details on their performance, CDC-grinding, and laser gyroscopes containing Zerodur?? |

| Abstract Note | This book is one of a series reporting on international research and development activities conducted by the Schott Group companies. With the series Schott aims to provide an overview of its activities for scientists, engineers, and managers from all branches of industry worldwide where glass and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends relating to the subject treated. This volume lays the foundations for - supervision of production processes, including raw materials, evaporation from the melt, exhaust gases, and environmental concerns; - troubleshooting in case of glass defects in combination with research for the design of faultless (in the ppm range) or at least high-yield processes; - understanding the origin of customer complaints because of unfulfilled expectations concerning material properties or product behaviour. The book is conceived as a monograph. The individual chapters, however, are written by leading Schott experts on the corresponding subjects. Many figures, tables, and examples are chosen to introduce the reader to thin-film science and technology |

| Title | The Properties of Optical Glass |
| Author(s) | Bach, Hans;Neuroth, Norbert |
| Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998. |
| Description | XVII, 414 p : online resource |
| Abstract Note | This book, entitled The Properties of Optical Glass, is one of a series reporting on research and development activities on products and processes conducted by the Schott Group. The scientifically founded development of new products and technical processes has traditionally been of vital importance at Schott and has always been per?? formed on a scale determined by the prospects for application of our special glasses. The scale has increased enormously since the reconstruction of the Schott Glaswerke in Mainz. The range of expert knowledge required for that could never have been supplied by Schott alone. It is also a tradition in our company to cultivate collaboration with customers, universities, and research institutes. Publications in numerous technical journals, which since 1969 we have edited to a regular timeplan as Forschungsberichte - 'research reports' - formed the basis of this cooperation. They contain up-to-date information on the most var?? ious topics for the expert but are not suited as survey material for those whose standpoint is more remote. This is the point where we would like to place our series, to stimulate the exchange of thoughts, so that we can consider from different points of view the possibilities offered by those incredibly versatile materials, glass and glass ceramics. We would like to show scientists and engineers, interested customers, and friends and employees of our firm the knowledge that has been won through our research and development at Schott in cooperation with the users of our materials |
