TitleDavid Hilbert and the Axiomatization of Physics (1898???1918) : From Grundlagen der Geometrie to Grundlagen der Physik
Author(s)Corry, L
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2004.
DescriptionXVII, 513 p. 36 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteDavid Hilbert (1862-1943) was the most influential mathematician of the early twentieth century and, together with Henri Poincar??, the last mathematical universalist. His main known areas of research and influence were in pure mathematics (algebra, number theory, geometry, integral equations and analysis, logic and foundations), but he was also known to have some interest in physical topics. The latter, however, was traditionally conceived as comprising only sporadic incursions into a scientific domain which was essentially foreign to his mainstream of activity and in which he only made scattered, if important, contributions. Based on an extensive use of mainly unpublished archival sources, the present book presents a totally fresh and comprehensive picture of Hilbert???s intense, original, well-informed, and highly influential involvement with physics, that spanned his entire career and that constituted a truly main focus of interest in his scientific horizon. His program for axiomatizing physical theories provides the connecting link with his research in more purely mathematical fields, especially geometry, and a unifying point of view from which to understand his physical activities in general. In particular, the now famous dialogue and interaction between Hilbert and Einstein, leading to the formulation in 1915 of the generally covariant field-equations of gravitation, is adequately explored here within the natural context of Hilbert???s overall scientific world-view. This book will be of interest to historians of physics and of mathematics, to historically-minded physicists and mathematicians, and to philosophers of science

TitleSymbol and Physical Knowledge : On the Conceptual Structure of Physics
Author(s)Ferrari, M;Stamatescu, I.-O
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXV, 230 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book tackles the question of the symbolic structure of physics, a topic which is implicit in any theory of knowledge, but one that often seems to be ignored as an explicit and central element in today's epistemological debates. The elucidation of this problem should benefit a number of ongoing discussions and can help to avoid much recurring confusion. The contributions to the book have been chosen so as to provide a coherent view, ultimately addressing the relation between the concepts used in science and the real world. The first part provides an introduction to the problem as it arises in physics, and to the modern history of symbols. The subject of the second part is the epistemological discussion taking place between physicists and philosophers about the role of symbols in our knowledge of Nature. The third part addresses key issues related to the methodology of physics and the character of its symbolic structures. The aim of this book is to provide a consistent, if not comprehensive, view, emphasizing aspects that are paradigmatic for the natural sciences as a whole

TitleExperts in Science and Society
Author(s)Kurz-Milcke, Elke;Gigerenzer, Gerd
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2004.
DescriptionVIII, 314 p. 19 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn today's complex world, we have come to rely increasingly on those who have expertise in specific areas and can bring their knowledge to bear on crucial social, political and scientific questions. Taking the viewpoint that experts are consulted when there is something important at stake for an individual, a group, or society at large, Experts in Science and Society explores expertise as a relational concept. How do experts balance their commitment to science with that to society? How does a society actually determine that a person has expertise? What personal traits are valued in an expert? From where does the expert derive authority? What makes new forms of expertise emerge? These and related questions are addressed from a wide range of areas in order to be inclusive, as well as to demonstrate similarities across areas. Likewise, in order to be culturally comparative, this volume includes examples and discussions of experts in different countries and even in different time periods. The topics include the roles of political experts, scientific experts, medical experts, legal experts, and more

TitleFoundations of Quantum Mechanics, an Empiricist Approach
Author(s)de Muynck, W.M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2002.
DescriptionXXIV, 684 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOld and new problems of the foundations of quantum mechanics are viewed from the new perspective provided by a generalization of the mathematical formalism encompassing positive operator-valued measures. One objective is to demonstrate the crucial role the generalized formalism plays in fundamental issues as well as in practical applications, and to contribute to the development of the operational approach. A second objective is the development of an empiricist interpretation of this approach, duly taking into account the role played by the measuring instrument in quantum mechanical measurements. Copenhagen and anti-Copenhagen interpretations are critically assessed, and found to be wanting due to insufficiently taking into account the measurement interaction. The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen problem and the problem of the Bell inequalities are discussed, starting from this new perspective. An explanation of violation of the Bell inequalities is developed, providing an alternative to the usual explanation on the basis of non-locality. This treatise is based on lecture notes of an advanced course on the foundations of quantum mechanics

TitleQuantum Theory: Concepts and Methods
Author(s)Peres, A
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2002.
DescriptionXIV, 450 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThere are many excellent books on quantum theory from which one can learn to compute energy levels, transition rates, cross sections, etc. The theoretical rules given in these books are routinely used by physicists to compute observable quantities. Their predictions can then be compared with experimental data. There is no fundamental disagreement among physicists on how to use the theory for these practical purposes. However, there are profound differences in their opinions on the ontological meaning of quantum theory. The purpose of this book is to clarify the conceptual meaning of quantum theory, and to explain some of the mathematical methods which it utilizes. This text is not concerned with specialized topics such as atomic structure, or strong or weak interactions, but with the very foundations of the theory. This is not, however, a book on the philosophy of science. The approach is pragmatic and strictly instrumentalist. This attitude will undoubtedly antagonize some readers, but it has its own logic: quantum phenomena do not occur in a Hilbert space, they occur in a laboratory

TitleCompendium of Quantum Physics : Concepts, Experiments, History and Philosophy
Author(s)Greenberger, Daniel;Hentschel, Klaus;Weinert, Friedel
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2009.
DescriptionXVI, 901 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWith contributions by many of today's leading quantum physicists, philosophers and historians, including three Nobel laureates, this comprehensive A to Z of quantum physics provides a lucid understanding of the key concepts of quantum theory and experiment. It covers technical and interpretational aspects alike, and includes both traditional topics and newer areas such as quantum information and its relatives. The central concepts that have shaped contemporary understanding of the quantum world are clearly defined, with illustrations where helpful, and discussed at a level suitable for undergraduate and graduate students of physics, history of science, and philosophy of physics. All articles share three main aims: (1) to provide a clear definition and understanding of the term concerned; (2) where possible, to trace the historical origins of the concept; and (3) to provide a small but optimal selection of references to the most relevant literature, including pertinent historical studies. Also discussed are the often contentious philosophical implications derived from quantum theory and its associated experimental findings. This compendium will be an indispensable resource for all those seeking concise up-to-date information about the many facets of quantum physics

TitleHeaven and Earth in Ancient Greek Cosmology : From Thales to Heraclides Ponticus
Author(s)Couprie, Dirk L
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2011.
DescriptionXXXIV, 262 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn Miletus, about 550 B.C., together with our world-picture cosmology was born. This book tells the story. In Part One the reader is introduced in the archaic world-picture of a flat earth with the cupola of the celestial vault onto which??the celestial bodies are attached. One of the subjects treated in that context is the riddle of the tilted celestial axis. This part also contains an extensive chapter on archaic astronomical instruments.??Part Two??shows how Anaximander (610-547 B.C.) blew up this archaic world-picture and replaced it by a new one that is essentially still ours. He taught that the celestial bodies orbit at different distances and that the earth floats unsupported in space. This makes him the founding father of cosmology.??Part Three??discusses topics that completed the new picture??described by Anaximander. Special attention is paid to the confrontation between Anaxagoras and Aristotle on the question whether the earth is flat or spherical, and on the battle??between Aristotle and Heraclides Ponticus on the question whether the universe is finite or infinite. ???In this book, Dirk L. Couprie presents his efforts at clarifying the views of the pioneers of theoretical cosmology. It covers the crucial period from about the middle of the sixth until the middle of the fourth century B.C., with its focus on the magnificent figure of Anaximander. The book by Dirk Couprie constitutes an important and in several respects indispensable contribution to this field.??? Dmitri Panchenko St. Petersburg State University

TitleThe Unknown as an Engine for Science : An Essay on the Definite and the Indefinite
Author(s)Pirner, Hans J
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXVII, 146 p. 23 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explores the limits of our knowledge. The author shows how uncertainty and indefiniteness not only define the borders confining our understanding, but how they feed into the process of discovery and help to push back these borders. Starting with physics the author collects examples from economics, neurophysiology, history, ecology and philosophy. The first part shows how information helps to reduce indefiniteness. Understanding rests on our ability to find the right context, in which we localize a problem as a point in a network of connections. New elements must be combined with the old parts of the existing complex knowledge system, in order to profit maximally from the information. An attempt is made to quantify the value of information by its ability to reduce indefiniteness. The second part explains how to handle indefiniteness with methods from fuzzy logic, decision theory, hermeneutics and semiotics. It is not sufficient that the new element appears in an experiment, one also has to find a theoretical reason for its existence. Indefiniteness becomes an engine of science, which gives rise to new ideas.
