TitleDiscrete Transforms
Author(s)Firth, J.M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992.
Description187 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe analysis of signals and systems using transform methods is a very important aspect of the examination of processes and problems in an increasingly wide range of applications. Whereas the initial impetus in the development of methods appropriate for handling discrete sets of data occurred mainly in an electrical engineering context (for example in the design of digital filters), the same techniques are in use in such disciplines as cardiology, optics, speech analysis and management, as well as in other branches of science and engineering. This text is aimed at a readership whose mathematical background includes some acquaintance with complex numbers, linear differen?? tial equations, matrix algebra, and series. Specifically, a familiarity with Fourier series (in trigonometric and exponential forms) is assumed, and an exposure to the concept of a continuous integral transform is desirable. Such a background can be expected, for example, on completion of the first year of a science or engineering degree course in which transform techniques will have a significant application. In other disciplines the readership will be past the second year undergraduate stage. In either case, the text is also intended for earlier graduates whose degree courses did not include this type of material and who now find themselves, in a professional capacity, requiring a knowledge of discrete transform methods

TitleFundamentals of Electronic Imaging Systems : Some Aspects of Image Processing
Author(s)Schreiber, William F
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionXIX, 332 p : online resource
Abstract NoteImage processing is a fascinating applications area, not a fundamental science of sufficient generality to warrant studying it for its own sake. In this area, there are many opportunities to apply art and experience, as well as knowledge from a number of sciences and engineering disciplines, to the creation of products and processes for which society has an expressed need. Without this need, work in the field would be sterile, but with it, image processing can readily provide the interested scientist or engineer with a professioilal lifetime of challenging problems and corresponding rewards. This point of view motivates this book and has influenced the selection and treatment of topics. I have not attempted to 1 be encyclopedic; this service has already been performed by others. It will be noted that the word "digital" is not in the title of this book. While much of present-day image processing is implemented digitally, this work is not intended for those who think of image processing as a branch of digital signal processing, except, perhaps, to try to change their minds. Image gathering and image display, vital parts of the field with strong effects on image quality, are inherently analog, as are all of the channels and media now used, or likely to be used in the future, to record TV signals and to transmit them to the home

TitleDigital Telephony and Network Integration
Author(s)Keiser, Bernard E;Strange, Eugene
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1995.
DescriptionXVII, 669 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWhat is "digital telephony"? To the authors, the term digital telephony denotes the technology used to provide a completely digital telecommunication system from end-to-end. This implies the use of digital technology from one end instru?? ment through transmission facilities and switching centers to another end instru?? ment. Digital telephony has become possible only because of the recent and on?? going surge of semiconductor developments, allowing microminiaturization and high reliability along with reduced costs. This book deals with both the future and the present. Thus, the first chapter is entitled, "A Network in Transition." As baselines, Chapters 2 and 11 provide the reader with the present status of teler-hone technology in terms of voice digiti?? zation as well as switching principles. The book is an outgrowth of the authors' consulting and teaching experience in the field since the early 1980s. The book has been written to provide both the engineering student and the practicing engineer a working knowledge of the prin?? ciples of present and future telecommunication systems based upon the use of the public switched network. Problems or discussion questions have been included at the ends of the chapters to facilitate the book's use as a senior-level or first?? year graduate-level course text. Numerous clients and associates of the authors as well as hundreds of others have provided useful information and examples for the text, and the authors wish to thank all those who have so contributed either directly or indirectly

TitleISDN Technology
Author(s)Brewster, J.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionX, 126 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) represents the current position in about a hundred years of evolutionary growth of the worldwide telecommunications infrastructure. This evolution is by no means complete and the next few years will see the emergence of a "Broad-band" ISDN as the next stage of evolutionary development. It is important to appreciate the evolutionary nature of the telecommunications infrastructure if one is to properly understand much of the thinking that lies behind the current ISDN proposals. This book therefore begins with a number of chapters devoted to a study of the various developments which have eventually led to the concept of an integrated digital network. These include the development of digital transmission of speech using PCM and the development of digital switching techniques based on stored program control. The book then turns to a consideration of those features of the existing telecommunications network which need to be modified in order to make ISDN a realizable practicality. Of particular importance is the digitization of transmission over the links between the user and the local exchange. Next we look at the current practice and proposals for ISDN based on the technology presently in use in the telephone network. Finally, we look at the proposals for a broadband ISDN likely to become widely available by the turn of the century

TitlePhotonic Switching II : Proceedings of the International Topical Meeting, Kobe, Japan, April 12???14, 1990
Author(s)Tada, Kunio;Hinton, H. Scott
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionXIII, 396 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe 1990 International Topical Meeting on Photonic Switching was held April 12-14, 1990, in Kobe, Japan, in conjunction with the 1990 International Meet?? ing on Optical Computing. It was sponsored by the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers in cooperation with the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, the Optical Society of America, and the Japan So?? ciety of Applied Physics. The attendance was in excess of 340 persons, with 18 countries represented - a testimony to the current international interest in photonic switching. This book contains expanded and more detailed versions of most of the papers presented at the topical meeting. With the success of optical fibers there is an increased demand for a switch?? ing system that can operate directly on the light present in the fibers. The goal is to reduce the total number of optical-to-electrical and electrical-to-optical transformations as far as possible, in addition to exploiting the large spec?? tral and temporal bandwidth offered by such an optically transparent system

TitleSignal Processing and Systems Theory : Selected Topics
Author(s)Chui, Charles K;Chen, Guanrong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionXI, 267 p : online resource
Abstract Note"Signal Processing and Systems Theory" is concerned with the study of H-optimization for digital signal processing and discrete-time control systems. The first three chapters present the basic theory and standard methods in digital filtering and systems from the frequency-domain approach, followed by a discussion of the general theory of approximation in Hardy spaces. AAK theory is introduced, first for finite-rank operators and then more generally, before being extended to the multi-input/multi-output setting. This mathematically rigorous book is self-contained and suitable for self-study. The advanced mathematical results derived here are applicable to digital control systems and digital filtering

TitlePorous Silicon Science and Technology : Winter School Les Houches, 8 to 12 February 1994
Author(s)Vial, Jean-Claude;Derrien, Jacques
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionXVII, 358 p. 117 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe discovery of bright visible light emission from porous silicon has opened the door to various nanometer sized silicon structures where the confinement of carriers gives rise to interesting physical properties. While the high efficiency of the light emission in the visible range is the common and the most prominent feature, their structures display similar properties with other highly divided materials (even non semiconductors), and then justify a multidisciplinary approach. This along with potential applications has attracted a large number of researchers followed by students to be trained. Until now international conferences have provided the exchange of information but have remained highly specialised so it was time to give thought to the organisation of topical and advanced lectures where the multidisciplinarity and the didactic approach are paramount. L'ecole des Houches was ideally devoted to that purpose. The meeting : " Luminescence of porous silicon and silicon nanostructures" was the first international school on this topic but some aspects in the organisation and the attendance have given an international workshop flavor to it. The school by itself has trained 82 ??students??, most of them were students starting their Ph. D thesis. 50% were French citizens and the other represented countries were Germany, England, USA, Czechoslovakia, The Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, Canada, Brazil, India and Russia
