DescriptionXVII, 584 p. 194 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIAU Symposium Number 52 on Interstellar Dust and Related Topics was held at Albany, N.Y., on the campus of the State University of New York at Albany from May 29 to June 2, 1972. The members of the Organizing Committee were: Dr A. D. Code, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis., U.S.A. Dr B. D. Donn, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., U.S.A. Dr A. Elvius, Stockholm Observatory, Saltsjobaden, Sweden. Dr T. Gehrels, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz., U.S.A. Dr J. M. Greenberg (Chairman), State University of New York at Albany, Albany, N.Y., U.S.A. Dr H. C. van de Hulst, Sterrewacht, Leiden, Holland. Dr S. B. Pikel'ner, Sternberg Astronomical Institute, Moscow, U.S.S.R. Dr E. E. Salpeter, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., U.S.A. Dr B. E. Turner, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Charlottesville, Va., U.S.A. The suggestion was first made in 1971 that a symposium on interstellar grains would be timely. The response to the first preliminary announcement, which was sent out on November 29, 1971, was well beyond our expectations. The meeting was locally sponsored by the State University and by Dudley Observatory. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Foundation con?? tributed along with the IAU. There were 158 participants of whom 49 were from 15 countries outside the United States. A total of 92 papers were presented

TitleNeutrino Physics and Astrophysics
Author(s)Fiorini, Ettore
PublicationBoston, MA, Springer US, 1982.
DescriptionXII, 422 p. 33 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteNeutrino '80 held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture in Erice, was the tenth of a series of International Confer?? ences on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics. It also marked the fiftieth anniversary of the first mention, by Wolfgang Pauli, of a neutral particle emitted in beta decay. The conference occurred at a very propitious time in neutrino physics: the possibility of a non-zero neutrino mass and of neutrino oscillations has obvious implications of great importance in neutrino astrophysics and cosmology, as well as in the grand unified theories. In order to encourage contacts and discussions among the various experts in different branches of neutrino physics and astrophysics, the conference was based only on plenary sessions, and mainly on review talks. Short communications were accepted only if they bore new and unexpected results which could not be covered in the appro?? priate review. I would like to thank the participants for their understanding of this often unpopular rule. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the members of the International Advisory Committee, to George Marx, Secretary of the on-going International Neutrino Committee, to the rapporteurs and session chairmen. Thanks are especially due to Antonino Zichichi, Director of the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, for the warm and generous hospitality extended to us, and to Alberto Gabriele and Pinola Savalli for their untiring efforts to make our stay in Erice as enjoyable as fruitful

TitleRadioactive Waste Disposal and Geology
Author(s)Krauskopf, Konrad B
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1988.
DescriptionXII, 146 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe perception of radioactive waste as a major problem for the industrial world has developed only recently. Four decades ago the disposal of such waste was regarded as a relatively minor matter. Those were the heady days when nuclear fission seemed the answer to the world's energy needs: the two wartime bombs had demonstrated its awesome power, and now it was to be harnessed for the production of electricity, the excavation of canals, even the running of cars and airplanes. In all applications of fission some waste containing radioactive elements would be generated of course, but it seemed only a trivial annoyance, a problem whose solution could be deferred until the more exciting challenges of constructing reactors and devising more efficient weapons had been mastered. So waste accumulated, some in tanks and some buried in shallow trenches. These were recognized as only temporary, makeshift measures, because it was known that the debris would be hazardous to its surroundings for many thousands of years and hence that more permanent disposal would someday be needed. The difficulty of accomplishing this more lasting disposal only gradually became apparent. The difficulty has been compounded by uncertainty about the physiological effects oflow-Ievel radiation, by the inadequacy of detailed knowledge about the behavior of engineered and geologic materials over long periods under unusual conditions, and by the sensitization of popular fears about radiation in all its forms following widely publicized reactor accidents and leaks from waste storage sites

TitleTransportation Planning for a Better Environment
Author(s)Stringer, Peter;Wenzel, H
PublicationBoston, MA, Springer US, 1976.
DescriptionXIV, 439 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAll the papers in this volume were presented at a conference on Transportation and Urban Life, held in Munich during the third week of September, 1975. The conference was sponsored by the Special Programme Panels on Systems Science and Human Factors of the Science Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The distinguishing characteristic of the conference and of this volume lies in the combination of systems science and human factors contributions in the field of urban transportation. The initiative for attempting such a synthesis came from the sponsors. It is increasingly realised that the complexity of contemporary problems which applied scientists are being asked to solve is such that the coordinated efforts of several disciplines are needed to solve them. The brief which we formulated for the conference and distribu?? ted in our international call for papers was as follows: "The conference is intended to highlight significant psycho?? logical, SOCiological and economic aspects of transportation and urban life and to present new techniques which can be applied to these aspects and their interfaces". Papers were invited in four topic areas: Communities (transportation problems in relation to social needs, residential planning, industry and c0l1lITlerce) ; Cities and large urban areas (the econOlnic environment, material fl~l, resources); Regional development and transportation (administration and management at the project and multiprogramme level); and Quality of life and transportation (noise, visual intrusion, severance, air pollution)

TitleHadronic Matter at Extreme Energy Density
Author(s)Cabibbo, Nicola;Sertorio, Luigi
PublicationBoston, MA, Springer US, 1980.
DescriptionX, 358 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book originated in the Workshop on "Hadronic Matter at Extreme Energy Density," held at the Ettore Majorana Center in Erice, October 13-21, 1978. The lectures have been expanded to their present size, and the contributions of seven seminars have been represented by abstracts which should stimulate the reader's interest and guide him to the original literature. The title of the book perhaps does not fully represent its content but still is a good indication of the conceptual motiva?? tion of our Workshop. The development of physics in recent years has filled in the first details of the grand design which was initiated with the theory of general relativity and aspires to a synthesis of all the different interactions. However, this development has not been a linear one but .has followed a divided pattern: general relativity had its phenomenological domain in cosmology and had little to do with high-energy elementary particle physics. It was progress in the knowledge of symmetries in particle physics that fueled the advance toward the present formulation of supergravity, thus help?? ing to heal this historical separation. The great program would not have advanced so far if our attention had all the time stayed focused at infinity, where the great issues are

TitleSpectral Classification and Multicolour Photometry
Author(s)Fehrenbach, Ch;Westerlund, B. E
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1973.
DescriptionXIV, 314 p. 57 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteDr J. Landi Dessy, Director of the Astronomical Observatory, Cordoba, Argentina, invited the International Astronomical Union to hold a Symposium in Cordoba in connection with the celebration of the Centennial of the Cordoba Observatory; the date of foundation is October 24, 1871. He proposed that the Symposium should deal with Spectral Classification and Multicolour Photometry as seven years had elapsed since the Symposium No. 24 in Saltsj6baden, and much development had occurred in the field. The invitation and the proposal were accepted by the IAU, and the Symposium was held in Villa Carlos Paz, near Cordoba, between October 18 and October 24, 1971. It was attended by about 50 scientists representing Argentina, Canada, Chile, Den?? mark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K., U.S.A., Vatican City State and Venezuela. The Symposium was divided into four sessions: 1. Classification of slit spectra, 2. Classification of objective-prism spectra, 3. Photometric classification, 4. Catalogues and documentation. It was decided not to include problems of calibration of absolute magnitudes and temperatures of stars but to refer this to a separate symposium. The contents of the present volume follow closely the programmes of the individual sessions of the Symposium. All the participants at the Symposium appreciated the excellent hospitality of their Argentinian hosts and the efficient help given by the staff ofthe Cordoba Observatory
