Title | An Introduction to Complex Systems : Society, Ecology, and Nonlinear Dynamics |
Author(s) | Fieguth, Paul |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XII, 346 p. 243 illus., 178 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This undergraduate text explores a variety of large-scale phenomena - global warming, ice ages, water, poverty - and uses these case studies as a motivation to explore nonlinear dynamics, power-law statistics, and complex systems. Although the detailed mathematical descriptions of these topics can be challenging, the consequences of a system being nonlinear, power-law, or complex are in fact quite accessible. This book blends a tutorial approach to the mathematical aspects of complex systems together with a complementary narrative on the global/ecological/societal implications of such systems. Nearly all engineering undergraduate courses focus on mathematics and systems which are small scale, linear, and Gaussian. Unfortunately there is not a single large-scale ecological or social phenomenon that is scalar, linear, and Gaussian. This book offers students insights to better understand the large-scale problems facing the world and to realize that these cannot be solved by a single, narrow academic field or perspective. Instead, the book seeks to emphasize understanding, concepts, and ideas, in a way that is mathematically rigorous, so that the concepts do not feel vague, but not so technical that the mathematics get in the way. The book is intended for undergraduate students in a technical domain such as engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, and environmental studies |

Title | Shallow Clouds, Water Vapor, Circulation, and Climate Sensitivity |
Author(s) | Pincus, Robert;Winker, David;Bony, Sandrine;Stevens, Bjorn |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | VIII, 396 p. 144 illus., 134 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume presents a series of overview articles arising from a workshop exploring the links among shallow clouds, water vapor, circulation, and climate sensitivity. It provides a state-of-the art synthesis of understanding about the coupling of clouds and water vapor to the large-scale circulation. The emphasis is on two phenomena, namely the self-aggregation of deep convection and interactions between low clouds and the large-scale environment, with direct links to the sensitivity of climate to radiative perturbations. Each subject is approached using simulations, observations, and synthesizing theory; particular attention is paid to opportunities offered by new remote-sensing technologies, some still prospective. The collection provides a thorough grounding in topics representing one of the World Climate Research Program???s Grand Challenges. Previously published in Surveys in Geophysics, Volume 38, Issue 6, 2017 The articles ???Observing Convective Aggregation???, ???An Observational View of Relationships Between Moisture Aggregation, Cloud, and Radiative Heating Profiles???, ???Implications of Warm Rain in Shallow Cumulus and Congestus Clouds for Large-Scale Circulations???, ???A Survey of Precipitation-Induced Atmospheric Cold Pools over Oceans and Their Interactions with the Larger-Scale Environment???, ???Low-Cloud Feedbacks from Cloud-Controlling Factors: A Review???, ???Mechanisms and Model Diversity of Trade-Wind Shallow Cumulus Cloud Feedbacks: A Review???, ???Structure and Dynamical Influence of Water Vapor in the Lower Tropical Troposphere???, ???Emerging Technologies and Synergies for Airborne and Space-Based Measurements of Water Vapor Profiles???, ???Observational Constraints on Cloud Feedbacks: The Role of Active Satellite Sensors???, and ???EUREC4A: A Field Campaign to Elucidate the Couplings Between Clouds, Convection and Circulation??? are available as open access articles under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com |

Title | Modern Singular Spectral-Based Denoising and Filtering Techniques for 2D and 3D Reflection Seismic Data |
Author(s) | Tiwari, R. K;Rekapalli, R |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | XVI, 157 p. 104 illus., 43 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book discusses the latest advances in singular spectrum-based algorithms for seismic data processing, providing an update on recent developments in this field. Over the past few decades, researchers have extensively studied the application of the singular spectrum-based time and frequency domain eigen image methods, singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and multichannel SSA for various geophysical data. This book addresses seismic reflection signals, which represent the amalgamated signals of several unwanted signals/noises, such as ground roll, diffractions etc. Decomposition of such non-stationary and erratic field data is one of the multifaceted tasks in seismic data processing. This volume also includes comprehensive methodological and parametric descriptions, testing on appropriately generated synthetic data, as well as comparisons between time and frequency domain algorithms and their applications to the field data on 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D data sets. Lastly, it features an exclusive chapter with MATLAB coding for SSA |

Title | Climate Change Modeling Methodology : Selected Entries from the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology |
Author(s) | Rasch, Philip J |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2012. |
Description | VI, 338 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Earth's average temperature has risen by 1.4??F over the past century, and computer models project that it will rise much more over the next hundred years, with significant impacts on weather, climate, and human society. Many climate scientists attribute these increases to the buildup of greenhouse gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels and to the anthropogenic production of short-lived climate pollutants. Climate Change Modeling Methodologies: Selected Entries from the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology provides readers with an introduction to the tools and analysis techniques used by climate change scientists to interpret the role of these forcing agents on climate.?? Readers will also gain a deeper understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of these models and how to test and assess them.?? The contributions include a glossary of key terms and a concise definition of the subject for each topic, as well as recommendations for sources of more detailed information. Features authoritative, peer-reviewed contributions on the development and use of??contemporary methods in climate change science Provides insight into the construction, assessment, and testing of climate models Covers individual component models for the atmosphere, ocean, land, and ice, and discusses their contribution to an example of climate change in monsoon systems Discusses how climate change models can shed light on the changing climate of the past and on possible shifts in the future |

Title | The Earth's Hydrological Cycle |
Author(s) | Bengtsson, L;Bonnet, R.-M;Calisto, M;Destouni, G;Gurney, R;Johannessen, J;Kerr, Y;Lahoz, W.A;Rast, M |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2014. |
Description | VIII, 409 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book gives a comprehensive presentation of our present understanding of the Earth's Hydrological cycle and the problems, consequences and impacts that go with this topic. Water is a central component in the Earth's system. It is indispensable for life on Earth in its present form and influences virtually every aspect of our planet's life support system. On relatively short time scales, atmospheric water vapor interacts with the atmospheric circulation and is crucial in forming the Earth's climate zones. Water vapor is the most powerful of the greenhouse gases and serves to enhance the tropospheric temperature. The dominant part of available water on Earth resides in the oceans. Parts are locked up in the land ice on Greenland and Antarctica and a smaller part is estimated to exist as groundwater. If all the ice over the land and all the glaciers were to melt, the sea level would rise by some 80 m. In comparison, the total amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is small; it amounts to ~ 25 kg/m2, or the equivalent of 25 mm water for each column of air. Yet atmospheric water vapor is crucial for the Earth???s energy balance. The book gives an up to date presentation of the present knowledge. Author(s) | Orcutt, John |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2013. |
Description | VI, 518 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Modern Earth System Monitoring represents a fundamental change in the way scientists study the Earth System.?? In Oceanography, for the past two centuries, ships have provided the platforms for observing.?? Expeditions on the continents and Earth???s poles are land-based analogues. Fundamental understanding of current systems, climate, natural hazards, and ecosystems has been greatly advanced. While these approaches have been remarkably successful, the need to establish measurements over time can only be made using Earth observations and observatories with exacting standards and continuous data.?? The 19 peer-reviewed contributions in this volume provide early insights into this emerging view of Earth in both space and time in which change is a critical component of our growing??understanding. Presents 19 authoritative, peer-reviewed entries from the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology Covers a wide range of data collection platforms, including satellite remote sensing, aerial surveys, and land- and ocean-based monitoring stations Features a glossary of key terms and a concise definition of the subject for each contribution Written for an audience of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals in academia, industry, and government |

Title | Geoengineering Responses to Climate Change : Selected Entries from the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology |
Author(s) | Lenton, Tim;Vaughan, Naomi |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2013. |
Description | V, 199 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Failure by the international community to make substantive progress in reducing CO2 emissions, coupled with recent evidence of accelerating climate change, has brought increasing urgency to the search for additional remediation approaches.?? This book presents a selection of state-of-the-art geoengineering methods for deliberately reducing the effects of anthropogenic climate change, either by actively removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere or by decreasing the amount of sunlight absorbed at the Earth???s surface.?? These methods contrast with more conventional mitigation approaches which focus on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. Geoengineering technologies could become a key tool to be used in conjunction with emissions reduction to limit the magnitude of climate change.?? Featuring authoritative, peer-reviewed entries from the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology, this book presents a wide range of climate change remediation technologies. Examines the potential of geoengineering technologies to contribute to the goal of restricting global warming to within 2??C of preindustrial levels Discusses carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and solar radiation management (SDR) Places the technologies discussed in their proper social, political, and ethical contexts Provides valuable insights for audiences ranging from researchers and?? industry experts to policy makers and university-level students |
