TitleHot Spots in Extragalactic Radio Sources : Proceedings of a Workshop, Held at Ringberg Castle, Tegernsee, FRG, February 8???12, 1988
Author(s)Meisenheimer, Klaus;R??ser, Hermann-Josef
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionXII, 304 p. 163 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis collection of papers presents a rather complete review of current knowledge of hot spots in some strong extragalactic radio sources. An overview of known results along with new data on radio observations and optical observations is given in the first and second parts of the book. Recent computational techniques which allow modelling and simulations of hot spots and jet behaviour are presented in the third part. The fourth part discusses particle acceleration and shock front phenomena. The articles will help the reader to appreciate the role hot spots play as laboratories for studying the interaction of jets with the surrounding medium and for testing our understanding of the overall source dynamics. The book is a valuable complement to the existing literature and an excellent introduction to this fairly new field of research

TitleInstrumentation for Ground-Based Optical Astronomy : Present and Future The Ninth Santa Cruz Summer Workshop in Astronomy and Astrophysics, July 13???July 24, 1987, Lick Observatory
Author(s)Robinson, Lloyd B
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1988.
DescriptionXXXIV, 751 p : online resource
Abstract NoteHistorically, the discovery of tools, or evidence that tools have been used, has been taken as proof of human activity; certainly the invention and spread of new tools has been a critical marker of human progress and has increased our ability to observe, measure, and understand the physical world. In astronomy the tools are telescopes and the optical and electronic instruments that support them. The use of the telescope by Galileo marked the beginning of a new and productive way to study and understand the universe in which we live. The effects of this new tool on what we can see, and how we see ourselves, are well known. However, after almost four centuries of developing ever more sensitive and subtle instruments as tools for astronomy, it might have been expected that only a few minor improvements would remain to be made, or that possibly the law of diminishing returns would have taken effect. On the contrary, the new instruments and ideas for new instruments described in this book make it clear that the rate of progress has not diminished, and that this subject is still as exciting and productive as ever. Instrumentation for Ground-Based Optical Astronomy was chosen as the theme for the Ninth Santa Cruz Summer Workshop in Astronomy and Astrophysics

TitleThe New Cosmos
Author(s)Uns??ld, A
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1969.
DescriptionXII, 374 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book may serve to present the modern view of the universe to a large number of readers whose over-full professional commit?? ments leave them no time for the study of larger monographs ... Such a book should not be too compendious. Accordingly, the author has been at pains to allow the leading ideas of the various domains of astronomical investigation to stand out plainly in their scientific and historical settings; the introductory chapters of the three parts of the book ... , in the framework of historical surveys, should assist the general review. With that in mind, the title was chosen following Alexander von Humboldt's well known book "Kosmos, Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung" (1827-1859). On the other hand, particular results - which admittedly first lend colour to the picture - are often simply stated without attempting any thorough justification. The reader seeking further information will find guidance in the Bibliography. This makes no pretentions to completeness or historical balance. References in the text or in captions for the figures, by quoting authors and years, make it possible for the reader to trace the relevant publications through the standard abstracting journals. I wish to thank my colleagues V. WEIDEMANN, E. RICHTER and B. BASCHEK for their critical reading of the book and for much helpful counsel, and H. HOLWEGER for his tireless collaboration with the proofs. Similarly, my thanks are due to Miss ANTJE WAGNER for the careful preparation of the typescript

TitleSCORe ???96: Solar Convection and Oscillations and their Relationship
Author(s)Pijpers, F.P;Christensen-Dalsgaard, J??rgen;Rosenthal, C.S
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionVII, 315 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the reviews and poster papers presented at the workshop Solar Convection and Oscillations and their Relationship: SCORe '96, held in Arhus, Denmark, May 27 - 31, 1996. The aim of this workshop was to bring together experts in the fields of convection and helioseismology, and to stimulate collaborations and joint research. The participation to this workshop was purposely kept limited in order to provide optimal conditions for informal discussions. In autumn of 199,5 the long-awaited GONG network of solar telescopes became fully operational and the first data already show significant improvement over existing datasets on solar oscillations. Furthermore, in December of 1995 the satellite SOHO was launched which, together with GONG, provides a major step forward in both the quantity and the quality of available solar oscillation data. It is with this in mind that we decided to organize the workshop to prepare for the optimal use of this wealth of data, with which to deepen our understanding of solar structure and specifically, of one of the longest-standing problems in solar and stellar modelling: the treatment of convection

TitleIdentification of Seismic Sources ??? Earthquake or Underground Explosion : Proceedings of the NATO Advance Study Institute held at Voksen??sen, Oslo, Norway, September 8???18, 1980
Author(s)Husebye, Eystein S;Mykkelveit, S
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1981.
Description888 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe subject of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was seismic monitoring under a nuclear test ban - an application of scienti?? fic knowledge and modern technology for a political purpose. The international political objective of a comprehensive nuclear test ban provided in turn the motivation for our technical and scientific discussions. In order to obtain a historical perspec?? tive on the progress of the work towards a comprehensive test-ban treaty (CTB), it is necessary to go back to 1958, when a confer?? ence of scientific experts in Geneva made the first steps toward an international seismic monitoring system. However, agreement on actual capabilities of a monitoring system for verifying compliance with such a treaty was not achieved, and thus the conference did not lead to immediate political results. After the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which banned nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, outer space and under the seas, renewed interest in the seismological verification of a CTB took place. A number of countries initiated large-scale research efforts toward detecting and identifying underground nuclear explosions, and it was in this context that the large?? aperture seismic arrays NORSAR and LASA were established. This type of development resulted in excellent seismic data in digital form and was thus of great irnprotance to the seismological com?? munity
