Title | Radiation Physics for Medical Physicists |
Author(s) | Podgorsak, Ervin B |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2006. |
Description | XXII, 438 p. 115 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book summarizes the radiation physics knowledge that professionals working in medical physics need to master for efficient and safe dealings with ionizing radiation. It contains eight chapters, each chapter covering a specific group of subjects related to radiation physics and is intended as a textbook for a course in radiation physics in medical-physics graduate programs. However, the book may also be of interest to the large number of professionals, not only medical physicists, who in their daily occupations deal with various aspects of medical physics and find a need to improve their understanding of radiation physics. The main target audience for this book is graduate students studying for M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in medical physics, who have to possess the necessary physics and mathematics background knowledge to be able to follow and master the complete textbook. Medical residents, technology students and biomedical engineering students may find certain sections too challenging or esoteric, yet they will find many sections interesting and useful in their studies. Candidates preparing for professional certification exams in any of the medical physics subspecialties should find the material useful, and some of the material would also help candidates preparing for certification examinations in medical dosimetry or radiation-related medical specialties. Numerous textbooks are available covering the various subspecialties of medical physics but they generally make a transition from the elementary basic physics directly into the intricacies of the given medical physics subspecialty. The intent of this textbook is to provide the missing link between the elementary physics on the one hand and the physics of the subspecialties on the other hand |

Description | XXXIV, 745 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This well-received textbook and reference summarizes the basic knowledge of atomic, nuclear, and radiation physics that professionals working in medical physics and biomedical engineering need for efficient and safe use of ionizing radiation. Concentrating on the underlying principles of radiation physics, it covers the prerequisite knowledge for medical physics courses on the graduate and post-graduate levels in radiotherapy physics, radiation dosimetry, imaging physics, and health physics, thus providing the link between elementary physics on the one hand and the intricacies of the medical physics specialties on the other hand. This expanded and revised second edition offers reorganized and expanded coverage. Several of the original chapters have been split into two with new sections added for completeness and better flow. New chapters on Coulomb scattering; on energy transfer and energy absorption in photon interactions; and on waveguide theory have been added in recognition of their importance. Others training for professions that deal with ionizing radiation in diagnosis and treatment as well as medical residents, students of technology and dosimetry, and biomedical engineering will find many sections interesting and useful for their studies. It also serves as excellent preparatory materials for candidates taking professional certification examinations in medical physics, medical dosimetry, and in medical specialties such as radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine. From reviews of the first edition: "Any instructor teaching an introductory graduate-level course on the principles of medical physics should consider this book for adoption as a text??? cover[s] the principles themselves, and it covers them very well." (Medical Physics, January 2006) "??? a delight and ready-reference also to seasoned practitioners??? This textbook, based on notes the author ???developed over the past 25 years of teaching radiation physics to MSc and PhD students in medical physics at McGill University??? is a real gem for the bookshelf of anyone already professional working in the radiation sciences???" (John H. Hubbell, Radiation Physics and Chemistry) "...for the theory of radiation physics at a fundamental level, Podgorsak's book provides a wonderful resource presented in a well organized and easy to learn manner, in a way not found in any other text... Title | The Phantoms of Medical and Health Physics : Devices for Research and Development |
Author(s) | DeWerd, Larry A;Kissick, Michael |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2014. |
Description | XII, 286 p. 114 illus., 62 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | A??comprehensive overview of all types of phantoms used in medical imaging, therapy, nuclear medicine and health physics is provided in this title. For ionizing radiation, dosimetry with respect to issues of material composition, shape, and motion/position effects are all highlighted. For medical imaging, each type of technology will need specific materials and designs, and the physics and indications will be explored for each type. Health physics phantoms are concerned with some of the same issues such as material heterogeneity, but also unique issues such as organ-specific radiation dose from sources distributed in other organs. Though some of the information enclosed is found in other sources, divided especially along the three categories of imaging, therapy, and health physics, many medical physicists as well as professionals need to bridge these three catagories. Readers will be able to use this book to select the appropriate phantom from a vendor at a clinic, to learn from as a student, to choose materials for custom phantom design, to design dynamic features, and as a reference for a variety of applications |

Title | 4D Modeling and Estimation of Respiratory Motion for Radiation Therapy |
Author(s) | Ehrhardt, Jan;Lorenz, Cristian |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013. |
Description | XX, 341 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Respiratory motion causes an important uncertainty in radiotherapy planning of the thorax and upper abdomen. The main objective of radiation therapy is to eradicate or shrink tumor cells without damaging the surrounding tissue by delivering a high radiation dose to the tumor region and a dose as low as possible to healthy organ tissues. Meeting this demand remains a challenge especially in case of lung tumors due to breathing-induced tumor and organ motion where motion amplitudes can measure up to several centimeters. Therefore, modeling of respiratory motion has become increasingly important in radiation therapy. With 4D imaging techniques spatiotemporal image sequences can be acquired to investigate dynamic processes in the patient???s body. Furthermore, image registration enables the estimation of the breathing-induced motion and the description of the temporal change in position and shape of the structures of interest by establishing the correspondence between images acquired at different phases of the breathing cycle. In radiation therapy these motion estimations are used to define accurate treatment margins, e.g. to calculate dose distributions and to develop prediction models for gated or robotic radiotherapy. In this book, the increasing role of image registration and motion estimation algorithms for the interpretation of complex 4D medical image sequences is illustrated. Different 4D CT image acquisition techniques and conceptually different motion estimation algorithms are presented. The clinical relevance is demonstrated by means of example applications which are related to the radiation therapy of thoracic and abdominal tumors. The state of the art and perspectives are shown by an insight into the current field of research. The book is addressed to biomedical engineers, medical physicists, researchers and physicians working in the fields of medical image analysis, radiology and radiation therapy |

Title | Magnetic Resonance Imaging : Theory and Practice |
Author(s) | Vlaardingerbroek, Marinus T;Boer, Jacques A. den |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XXIII, 481 p. 495 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This textbook gives a comprehensive survey of the analytical treatment of MRI physics and engineering. It gives readers the background needed to cope with the problems that arise when applying MRI in medicine or when (sub)systems or sequences for new applications are designed. Special attention is paid to the treatment of intrinsic artifacts of the different sequences, which can be described in a mathematically uniform way for the different scan methods. The book contains many images, especially showing specific properties of the different scan methods. The methods discussed include RARE, GRACE, EPI, and Spiral Scan. This second edition has been expanded in response to recent developments. In various places the treatment is refined. In particular, the chapter on motion and flow is expanded, and a new chapter is added, describing the configuration theory and its use in the understanding of multi-pulse sequences such as BURST, TSE and FFE. This edition also offers an overview by A.L. Luiten of the early history of MRI imaging |
