TitleLight Scattering in Solids VII : Crystal-Field and Magnetic Excitations
Author(s)Cardona, Manuel;G??ntherodt, Gernot
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionIX, 303 p. 18 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the seventh volume of a well-established series in which expert practitioners discuss topical aspects of light scattering in solids. Emphasis is placed on electronic excitations between crystal-field split levels of transition-metal and rare-earth ions in crystals, among them high-Tc superconductors and magnetic excitations that appear in superlattices containing magnetic metals. The contents of this volume again demonstrates the usefulness of Raman spectroscopy for the investigation and characterization of this class of materials. It will be useful to advanced students and to all researchers who apply Raman spectroscopy in their work

TitleLight Scattering in Solids IX : Novel Materials and Techniques
Author(s)Cardona, Manuel;Merlin, Roberto
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2007.
DescriptionXIII, 432 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the ninth volume of a well-established series in which expert practitioners discuss topical aspects of light scattering in solids. It reviews recent developments concerning mainly semiconductor nanostructures and inelastic x-ray scattering, including both coherent time-domain and spontaneous scattering studies. In the past few years, light scattering has become one of the most important research and characterization methods for studying carbon nanotubes and semiconducting quantum dots, and a crucial tool for exploring the coupled exciton--photon system in semiconductor cavities. Among the novel techniques discussed in this volume are pump--probe ultrafast measurements and those which use synchrotron radiation as light source. The book addresses improvements in the intensity, beam quality and time synchronization of modern synchrotron sources, which made it possible to measure the phonon dispersion in very small samples and to determine electronic energy bands as well as enabling real-time observations of high-frequency sound propagation

TitleFundamentals of Semiconductors : Physics and Materials Properties
Author(s)YU, Peter;Cardona, Manuel
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010.
DescriptionXX, 775 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis fourth edition of the well-established Fundamentals of Semiconductors serves to fill the gap between a general solid-state physics textbook and research articles by providing detailed explanations of the electronic, vibrational, transport, and optical properties of semiconductors. The approach is physical and intuitive rather than formal and pedantic. Theories are presented to explain experimental results. This textbook has been written with both students and researchers in mind. Its emphasis is on understanding the physical properties of Si and similar tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors. The explanations are based on physical insights. Each chapter is enriched by an extensive collection of tables of material parameters, figures, and problems. Many of these problems "lead the student by the hand" to arrive at the results. The major changes made in the fourth edition include: an extensive appendix about the important and by now well-established deep center known as the DX center, additional problems and the solutions to over fifty of the problems at the end of the various chapters. Some of the solutions contain extensions via discussion about topics of current interest in the field of semiconductor physics, such as spin-orbit coupling and k-linear band dispersion

PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXIV, 526 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the sixth volume of a well-established and popular series in which expert practitioners discuss topical aspects of light scattering in solids. This volume discusses recent results of Raman spectroscopy of high Tc superconductors, organic polymers, rare earth compounds, semimagnetic superconductors, and silver halides, as well as developments in the rapidly growing field of time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. Emphasis is placed on obtaining information about elementary excitations, the basic properties of materials, and the use of Raman spectroscopy as an analytical tool. This volume may be regarded as an encyclopedia of condensed matter physics from the viewpoint of the Raman spectroscopist. It will be useful to advanced students and to all researchers who apply Raman spectroscopy in their work

TitleFundamentals of Semiconductors : Physics and Materials Properties
Author(s)YU, Peter;Cardona, Manuel
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXVI, 623 p. 773 illus., 604 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteWe have so far received many comments and feedback on our book from all quarters including students, instructors and, of course, many friends. We are most grateful to them not only for their compliments but also for their valu?? able criticism. We also received many requests for an instructor manual and solutions to the problems at the end of each chapter. We realize that semicon?? ductor physics has continued to evolve since the publication of this book and there is a need to continue to update its content. To keep our readers informed of the latest developments we have created a Web Page for this book. Its ad?? dress (as of the writing of this preface) is: http://pauline.berkeley.edultextbook. At this point this Web Page displays the following information: 1) Content, outline and an excerpt of the book. 2) Reviews of the book in various magazines and journals. 3) Errata to both first and second printing (most have been corrected in the second edition as of this date). 4) Solutions to selected problems. 5) Additional supplementary problems
