TitleDynamic Systems Models : New Methods of Parameter and State Estimation
Author(s)Boguslavskiy, Josif A;Borodovsky, Mark
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXX, 201 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis monograph is an exposition of a novel method for solving inverse problems, a method of parameter estimation for time series data collected from simulations of real experiments. These time series might be generated by measuring the dynamics of aircraft in flight, by the function of a hidden Markov model used in bioinformatics or speech recognition or when analyzing the dynamics of asset pricing provided by the nonlinear models of financial mathematics. Dynamic Systems Models demonstrates the use of algorithms based on polynomial approximation which have weaker requirements than already-popular iterative methods. Specifically, they do not require a first approximation of a root vector and they allow non-differentiable elements in the vector functions being approximated. The text covers all the points necessary for the understanding and use of polynomial approximation from the mathematical fundamentals, through algorithm development to the application of the method in, for instance, aeroplane flight dynamics or biological sequence analysis. The technical material is illustrated by the use of worked examples and methods for training the algorithms are included. Dynamic Systems Models provides researchers in aerospatial engineering, bioinformatics and financial mathematics (as well as computer scientists interested in any of these fields) with a reliable and effective numerical method for nonlinear estimation and solving boundary problems when carrying out control design. It will also be of interest to academic researchers studying inverse problems and their solution

TitleQuantum-Dot-Based Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers for O-Band Optical Communication
Author(s)Schmeckebier, Holger
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXXIII, 190 p. 109 illus., 59 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis examines the unique properties of gallium arsenide (GaAs)-based quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers for optical communication networks, introducing readers to their fundamentals, basic parameters and manifold applications. The static and dynamic properties of these amplifiers are discussed extensively in comparison to conventional, non quantum-dot based amplifiers, and their unique advantages are elaborated on, such as the fast carrier dynamics and the decoupling of gain and phase dynamics. In addition to diverse amplification scenarios involving single and multiple high symbol rate amplitude and phase-coded data signals, wide-range wavelength conversion as a key functionality for optical signal processing is investigated and discussed in detail. Furthermore, two novel device concepts are developed and demonstrated that have the potential to significantly simplify network architectures, reducing the investment and maintenance costs as well as the energy consumption of future networks.

TitleAn Introduction to Microwave Imaging for Breast Cancer Detection
Author(s)Concei????o, Raquel Cruz;Mohr, Johan Jacob;O'Halloran, Martin
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXIII, 144 p. 43 illus., 22 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book collates past and current research on one of the most promising emerging modalities for breast cancer detection. Readers will discover how, as a standalone technology or in conjunction with another modality, microwave imaging has the potential to provide reliable, safe and comfortable breast exams at low cost. Current breast imaging modalities include X- ray, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Positron Emission Tomography. Each of these methods suffers from limitations, including poor sensitivity or specificity, high cost, patient discomfort, and exposure to potentially harmful ionising radiation. Microwave breast imaging is based on a contrast in the dielectric properties of breast tissue that exists at microwave frequencies. The book begins by considering the anatomy and dielectric properties of the breast, contrasting historical and recent studies. Next, radar-based breast imaging algorithms are discussed, encompassing both early-stage artefact removal, and data independent and adaptive beamforming algorithms. Similarly, microwave tomographic reconstruction algorithms are reviewed, introducing the reader to both the fundamental and more advanced algorithms. The book also reviews research efforts to extract clinically useful information from the radar target signature of breast tumours. Finally, the book concludes by describing the state of the art prototype microwave breast imaging systems, with a particular emphasis on those which have progressed to the clinical evaluation stage. This work is motivated by the fact that breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death amongst women in Europe and the US, and the second most common cancer in the world today. Such an important area of research will appeal to many scholars and practitioners

TitleAzimuthal Walsh Filters : A Tool to Produce 2D and 3D Light Structures
Author(s)Bhattacharya, Indrani;Hazra, Lakshminarayan
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXII, 114 p. 137 illus., 91 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explores the possibility of using azimuthal Walsh filters as an effective tool for manipulating far-field diffraction characteristics near the focal plane of rotationally symmetric imaging systems. It discusses the generation and synthesis of azimuthal Walsh filters, and explores the inherent self-similarity presented in various orders of these filters, classifying them into self-similar groups and sub-groups. Further, it demonstrates that azimuthal Walsh filters possess a unique rotational self-similarity exhibited among adjacent orders. Serving as an atlas of diffraction phenomena with pupil functions represented by azimuthal Walsh filters of different orders, this book describes how orthogonality and self-similarity of these filters could be harnessed to sculpture 2D and 3D light distributions near the focus.
