TitleWavelets and Their Applications
Author(s)Byrnes, J.S;Hargreaves, Kathryn A;Berry, Karl
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXII, 415 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIt is probably true quite generally that in the history of human thinking the most fruitful developments frequently take place at those points where two different lines of thought meet. Hence, if they actually meet, that is, if they are at least so much related to each other that a real interaction can take place, then one may hope that new and interesting developments may follow. Werner Heisenberg This volume contains papers presented at the August 1992 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Wavelets and Their Applications. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy. Once again we gathered at this idyllic spot to explore and extend the reciprocity between mathematics and engineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usu?? ally disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied scientists, which occurred at our 1989 and 1991 ASI's, continued at this meeting. Wavelet theory and technology is in an important growth stage at which theoretical and practical results are being compared with existing methods. There have been spectacular wavelet successes and sobering comparisons with traditional ideas-but still there is a wide expanse of scientific problems to explore. Since these problems lie at the forefront of both pure mathematics and applied science, our NATO ASI was especially pertinent at this time

TitleDigital Telephony and Network Integration
Author(s)Keiser, Bernard E;Strange, Eugene
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1995.
DescriptionXVII, 669 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWhat is "digital telephony"? To the authors, the term digital telephony denotes the technology used to provide a completely digital telecommunication system from end-to-end. This implies the use of digital technology from one end instru?? ment through transmission facilities and switching centers to another end instru?? ment. Digital telephony has become possible only because of the recent and on?? going surge of semiconductor developments, allowing microminiaturization and high reliability along with reduced costs. This book deals with both the future and the present. Thus, the first chapter is entitled, "A Network in Transition." As baselines, Chapters 2 and 11 provide the reader with the present status of teler-hone technology in terms of voice digiti?? zation as well as switching principles. The book is an outgrowth of the authors' consulting and teaching experience in the field since the early 1980s. The book has been written to provide both the engineering student and the practicing engineer a working knowledge of the prin?? ciples of present and future telecommunication systems based upon the use of the public switched network. Problems or discussion questions have been included at the ends of the chapters to facilitate the book's use as a senior-level or first?? year graduate-level course text. Numerous clients and associates of the authors as well as hundreds of others have provided useful information and examples for the text, and the authors wish to thank all those who have so contributed either directly or indirectly

TitleISDN Technology
Author(s)Brewster, J.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionX, 126 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) represents the current position in about a hundred years of evolutionary growth of the worldwide telecommunications infrastructure. This evolution is by no means complete and the next few years will see the emergence of a "Broad-band" ISDN as the next stage of evolutionary development. It is important to appreciate the evolutionary nature of the telecommunications infrastructure if one is to properly understand much of the thinking that lies behind the current ISDN proposals. This book therefore begins with a number of chapters devoted to a study of the various developments which have eventually led to the concept of an integrated digital network. These include the development of digital transmission of speech using PCM and the development of digital switching techniques based on stored program control. The book then turns to a consideration of those features of the existing telecommunications network which need to be modified in order to make ISDN a realizable practicality. Of particular importance is the digitization of transmission over the links between the user and the local exchange. Next we look at the current practice and proposals for ISDN based on the technology presently in use in the telephone network. Finally, we look at the proposals for a broadband ISDN likely to become widely available by the turn of the century

TitleShipboard Acoustics : Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Shipboard Acoustics ISSA ???86, The Hague, The Netherlands, October 7???9, 1986
Author(s)Buiten, J
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1986.
DescriptionXI, 576 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe first International Symposium on Shipboard Acoustics, held in Noordwijkerhout (The Netherlands) in 1976, was a meeting of invited experts, each having considerable expertise in ship acoustics. Many of the participants were dealing with research on various ship acoustical subjects, and it proved to be a good idea to discuss future investigations and new techniques. At that time acousticians learned to use real-time signal-processing techniques and attempts were made to establish sound level prediction methods based on semi-fundamental considerations instead of the methods using empirically obtained data. Time was pressing as it was assumed that, in view of the adoption of Recommendation 141 of the International Labour Conference in 1970, authorities would soon make appropriate provisions to "protect seafarers from the ill effects of noise". This resulted in several national recommendations followed by the IMO "Code on noise levels aboard ships" which was adopted by the IMO Assembly in 1981. After that, pressure on the authorities was increased further by the decision of the European Community to protect labourers against harmful noise at their workplaces, including ships. Legally enforceable noise limits will therefore become normal in the future. In many countries recommendations with respect to maximum allowable sound pressure levels in the crew accomodations and work area aboard ships were already taken into account by ship owners, long before the existence of the Recommendations

TitleApplications of High-Field and Short Wavelength Sources
Author(s)DiMauro, Louis;Murnane, Margret;L'Huillier, Anne
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1998.
DescriptionX, 300 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Optical Society of America Conference on Applications of High Fields and Short Wavelength Sources, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, from March 20-22, 1997, was an exceptionally exciting conference. This conference was the seventh in a series of topical con?? ferences, held every two years, which are devoted to the generation and application of high field and short wavelength sources. The meeting was truly international in scope, with equal participation from both within and outside of the US. In the past two years, there has been dramatic progress in both laser and x-ray coher?? ent sources, both fundamental and applied. The 1997 meeting highlighted these advances, which are summarized in sections 1 and 2 of this volume. Terawatt-class lasers are now avail?? able in the UV or at high repetition rates. Michael Perry (LLNL) presented a keynote talk on petawatt class lasers and their applications in inertial confinement fusion, while Jorge Rocca (Colorado State University) presented a keynote talk on tabletop soft-x-ray lasers. Genera?? tion and measurement techniques are becoming very sophisticated throughout the UV and x?? ray region of the spectrum, and coherent sources have been extended to wavelengths below 30A. Phase control in the x-ray region is also now possible, and new phase-matching schemes in the UV have been experimentally demonstrated. It is clear that a new field of x-ray nonlin?? ear optics will deveiop rapidly over the next few years

TitleMaximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Science and Engineering : Volume 2: Applications
Author(s)Erickson, G;Smith, C.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1988.
DescriptionIX, 440 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume has its origin in the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Workshops on "Maximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Applied Statistics", held at the University of Wyoming, August 5-8, 1985, and at Seattle University, August 5-8, 1986, and August 4-7, 1987. It was anticipated that the proceedings of these workshops would be combined, so most of the papers were not collected until after the seventh workshop. Because most of the papers in this volume are in the nature of advancing theory or solving specific problems, as opposed to status reports, it is believed that the contents of this volume will be of lasting interest to the Bayesian community. The workshop was organized to bring together researchers from different fields to critically examine maximum-entropy and Bayesian methods in science and engineering as well as other disciplines. Some of the papers were chosen specifically to kindle interest in new areas that may offer new tools or insight to the reader or to stimulate work on pressing problems that appear to be ideally suited to the maximum-entropy or Bayesian method. These workshops and their proceedings could not have been brought to their final form without the support or help of a number of people

TitleCommunications After ad2000
Author(s)Davies, D.E.N;Hilsum, C;Rudge, A.W
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
DescriptionXIV, 253 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Royal Society has initiated a series of meetings to discuss the effect advances in technology will have on our way of life in the next century. The two previous meetings have been concerned with housing and waste treat?? ment. The subject of the third meeting, communications, is no less critical to life, but it offers particular problems and uncertainties, especially in the forecasting of future trends. Indeed, some have doubted if there can be profitable debate on long-term development in such a fast-moving field. The importance of the topic justifies an attempt, and the reader will judge whether the authors have met the challenge. Communications today bears little resemblance to that of the 1970s. Then we knew about satellites and optical fibres, and we had seen lasers and silicon chips, but most of us could never imagine the potential of the new technologies within our grasp. We had also not assessed the thirst of the popUlation for more and better ways of talking and writing to each other. It was the combination of market need and technical capability that created the com?? munications revolution

TitleDifference Sets, Sequences and their Correlation Properties
Author(s)Pott, A;Kumar, P. Vijay;Helleseth, Tor;Jungnickel, Dieter
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999.
DescriptionVIII, 448 p. 7 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe explanation of the formal duality of Kerdock and Preparata codes is one of the outstanding results in the field of applied algebra in the last few years. This result is related to the discovery of large sets of quad?? riphase sequences over Z4 whose correlation properties are better than those of the best binary sequences. Moreover, the correlation properties of sequences are closely related to difference properties of certain sets in (cyclic) groups. It is the purpose of this book to illustrate the connection between these three topics. Most articles grew out of lectures given at the NATO Ad?? vanced Study Institute on "Difference sets, sequences and their correlation properties". This workshop took place in Bad Windsheim (Germany) in August 1998. The editors thank the NATO Scientific Affairs Division for the generous support of this workshop. Without this support, the present collection of articles would not have been realized

TitleBeam Shaping and Control with Nonlinear Optics
Author(s)Kajzar, F;Reinisch, R
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1998.
DescriptionVIII, 475 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe field of nonlinear optics, which has undergone a very rapid development since the discovery of lasers in the early sixties, continues to be an active and rapidly developing - search area. The interest is mainly due to the potential applications of nonlinear optics: - rectly in telecommunications for high rate data transmission, image processing and recognition or indirectly from the possibility of obtaining large wavelength range tuneable lasers for applications in industry, medicine, biology, data storage and retrieval, etc. New phenomena and materials continue to appear regularly, renewing the field. This has proven to be especially true over the last five years. New materials such as organics have been developed with very large second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses. Imp- tant developments in the areas of photorefractivity, all optical phenomena, frequency conv- sion and electro-optics have been observed. In parallel, a number of new phenomena have been reported, some of them challenging the previously held concepts. For example, solitons based on second-order nonlinearities have been observed in photorefractive materials and frequency doubling crystals, destroying the perception that third order nonlinearities are - quired for their generation and propagation. New ways of creating and manipulating nonl- ear optical materials have been developed. An example is the creation of highly nonlinear (second-order active) polymers by static electric field, photo-assisted or all-optical poling. Nonlinear optics involves, by definition, the product of electromagnetic fields. As a con- quence, it leads to the beam control
