Author(s)Meyendorf, Norbert G. H;Nagy, Peter B;Rokhlin, Stanislav I
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXVII, 418 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWith an emphasis on aircraft materials, this book describes techniques for the material characterization to detect and quantify degradation processes such as corrosion and fatigue. It introduces readers to these techniques based on x-ray, ultrasonic, optical and thermal principles and demonstrates the potential of the techniques for a wide variety of applications concerning aircraft materials, especially aluminum and titanium alloys. The advantages and disadvantages of various techniques are evaluated. An introductory chapter describes the typical degradation mechanisms that must be considered and the microstructure features that have to be detected by NDE methods. Finally, some approaches for making lifetime predictions are discussed. It is suitable as a textbook in special training courses in advanced NDE and aircraft materials characterization

TitleModels and Analysis of Quasistatic Contact : Variational Methods
Author(s)Shillor, Meir;Sofonea, Mircea;Telega, J??zef Joachim
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXI, 263 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe mathematical theory of contact mechanics is a growing field in engineering and scientific computing. This book is intended as a unified and readily accessible source for mathematicians, applied mathematicians, mechanicians, engineers and scientists, as well as advanced students. The first part describes models of the processes involved like friction, heat generation and thermal effects, wear, adhesion and damage. The second part presents many mathematical models of practical interest and demonstrates the close interaction and cross-fertilization between contact mechanics and the theory of variational inequalities. The last part reviews further results, gives many references to current research and discusses open problems and future developments. The book can be read by mechanical engineers interested in applications. In addition, some theorems and their proofs are given as examples for the mathematical tools used in the models

TitleMultiparameter Equations of State : An Accurate Source of Thermodynamic Property Data
Author(s)Span, Roland
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionXVIII, 367 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAs basis of printed property charts and tables, empirical multiparameter equations of state are the most important source of accurate thermodynamic property data for more than 30 years now. However, due to increasing demands on the accuracy of thermodynamic property data in computerised calculations, to the availability of appropriate software tools, and to increasing computer power, such formulations became a valuable tool for every days work nowadays. This development has increased the number of scientists, engineers, and students who are working with empirical multiparameter equations of state. Nevertheless, the common knowledge on this kind of thermodynamic property models and on the ongoing progress in this scientific discipline is still very limited. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available know-how from the fundamentals to very recent developments in a single reference. Since the book is dedicated both to common users and to scientists who want to engage themselves in the development of multiparameter equations of state, general topics like the application of empirical equations of state or typical performances of different classes of formulations are discussed separately from advanced topics like the optimisation of the functional form or the improved representation of properties in the critical region. In this way, the book becomes a useful reference for readers with very different background. 480 references, 352 equations, 154 figures, and 36 tables underline the ambitiousness of this approach

TitleUnderstanding Viscoelasticity : Basics of Rheology
Author(s)Phan-Thien, Nhan
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXIII, 146 p : online resource
Abstract NoteViscoelasticity (or rheology) is a highly mathematical subject, interfacing several disciplines, from applied mathematics to mechanics and engineering. Other books on rheology are usually comprehensive to such a degree that students find it hard to isolate the important physical principles and develop good analytical skills for solving useful engineering problems. In this book, the necessary background for understanding viscoelasticity is covered; both the continuum and microstructure approaches to modelling viscoelastic materials are discussed, since neither approach alone is sufficient. The book starts with tensor notation, to give students the basic working tools, then addresses kinematics and constitutive equations, and ends with the constitutive modelling of polymer solutions and suspensions. It also includes a series of problems of graded difficulty. It is self-contained and ideally suited for a one-semester course on viscoelasticity

TitleThe Glass Transition : Relaxation Dynamics in Liquids and Disordered Materials
Author(s)Donth, E
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2001.
DescriptionXVII, 418 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the first book dedicated to the glass transition since this concept became recognized as a distinct and independent field of investigation. The glass transition is a synonym for relaxation and dynamics in complex disordered systems, especially in liquids. It embraces time-scales ranging from picoseconds to years. The book describes and interrelates the following processes: cooperative alpha processes in a cold liquid, structural relaxation in the glass near Tg, the Johari-Goldstein beta process, the Williams-G??tze process in a warm liquid, fast nonactivated cage rattling and boson peak, and ultraslow Fischer modes. By describing the salient facts, explaining and discussing the fundamentals, the author attempts to introduce a unifying concept for the entire material. The formulas, diagrams and references are carefully selected to illustrate the main current ideas about the glass transition

TitleQuantum Transport in Submicron Devices : A Theoretical Introduction
Author(s)Magnus, Wim;Schoenmaker, Wim
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXVII, 270 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book, the problem of electron and hole transport is approached from the point of view that a coherent and consistent physical theory can be constructed for transport phenomena. Along the road readers will visit some exciting citadels in theoretical physics as the authors guide them through the strong and weak aspects of the various theoretical constructions. Our goal is to make clear the mutual coherence and to put each theoretical model in an appropriate perspective. The mere fact that so many partial solutions have been proposed to describe transport, be it in condensed matter, fluids, or gases, illustrates that we are entering a world of physics with a rich variety of phenomena. Theoretical physics always seeks to provide a unifying picture. By presenting this tour of many very inventive attempts to build such a picture, we hope that the reader is inspired and encouraged to help find the unifying principle behind the many faces of transport
