Title | Shock Wave Compression of Condensed Matter : A Primer |
Author(s) | Forbes, Jerry W |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012. |
Description | XIV, 374 p. 211 illus., 11 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book introduces the core concepts of the shock wave physics of condensed matter, taking a continuum mechanics approach to examine liquids and isotropic solids. The text primarily focuses on one-dimensional uniaxial compression in order to show the key features of condensed matter???s response to shock wave loading. The first four chapters are specifically designed to quickly familiarize physical scientists and engineers with how shock waves interact with other shock waves or material boundaries, as well as to allow readers to better understand shock wave literature, use basic data analysis techniques, and design simple 1-D shock wave experiments. This is achieved by first presenting the steady one-dimensional strain conservation laws using shock wave impedance matching, which insures conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Here, the initial emphasis is on the meaning of shock wave and mass velocities in a laboratory coordinate system. An overview of basic experimental techniques for measuring pressure, shock velocity, mass velocity, compression and internal energy of steady 1-D shock waves is then presented. In the second part of the book, more advanced topics are progressively introduced: thermodynamic surfaces are used to describe equilibrium flow behavior, first-order Maxwell solid models are used to describe time-dependent flow behavior, descriptions of detonation shock waves in ideal and non-ideal explosives are provided, and lastly, a select group of current issues in shock wave physics are discussed in the final chapter |

Title | Electromagnetic Processing of Materials : Materials Processing by Using Electric and Magnetic Functions |
Author(s) | Asai, Shigeo |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2012. |
Description | XII, 176 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book??is both??a course book and a monograph. In fact, it has developed from notes given to graduate course students on materials processing in the years 1989 to 2006. Electromagnetic Processing of Materials (EPM), originates??from??a branch??of materials science and engineering??developed in the??1980s as a field aiming to create new materials and/or design processes by making use of various functions which appear when applying the electric and magnetic fields??to materials. It is based on transport phenomena, materials processing and magnetohydrodynamics. The first chapter briefly introduces the history, background and technology of EPM. In the second chapter, the concept of transport phenomena is concisely introduced and in the third chapter the essential part of magnetohydrodynamics is transcribed and readers are??shown that the concept of transport phenomena??does not only apply??to heat, mass and momentum, but also magnetic field. The fourth chapter describes electromagnetic processing of electrically conductive materials such as electromagnetic levitation, mixing, brake, and etc., which are caused by the Lorentz force. The fifth chapter treats magnetic processing of organic and non-organic materials such as magnetic levitation, crystal orientation, structural alignment and etc., which are induced by the magnetization force. This part is a new academic field named Magneto-Science, which?? focuses??on the development of super-conducting magnets. This book is written so as to be understood by any graduate student in engineering courses but also to be of interest to engineers and researchers in industries |

Title | Charged Semiconductor Defects : Structure, Thermodynamics and Diffusion |
Author(s) | Seebauer, Edmund G;Kratzer, Meredith C |
Publication | London, Springer London, 2009. |
Description | XIV, 298 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The technologically useful properties of a solid often depend upon the types and concentrations of the defects it contains. Not surprisingly, defects in semiconductors have been studied for many years, in many cases with a view towards controlling their behavior through various forms of "defect engineering." For example, in the bulk, charging significantly affects the total concentration of defects that are available to mediate phenomena such as solid-state diffusion. Surface defects play an important role in mediating surface mass transport during high temperature processing steps such as epitaxial film deposition, diffusional smoothing in reflow, and nanostructure formation in memory device fabrication. Charged Semiconductor Defects details the current state of knowledge regarding the properties of the ionized defects that can affect the behavior of advanced transistors, photo-active devices, catalysts, and sensors. Features: Group IV, III-V, and oxide semiconductors; Intrinsic and extrinsic defects; and, Point defects, as well as defect pairs, complexes and clusters. A crucial reference for materials scientists, surface scientists, electrical engineers, and solid-state physicists looking to approach the topic of defect charging from an integrated chemical engineering perspective. Researchers and industrial practitioners alike will find its content invaluable for device and process optimization |

Title | High Temperature Phenomena in Shock Waves |
Author(s) | Brun, Raymond |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012. |
Description | IX, 337 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The high temperatures generated in gases by shock waves give rise to physical and chemical phenomena such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions and inherently related radiation. In continuum regime, these processes start from the wave front, so that generally the gaseous media behind shock waves may be in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. This book presents the state of knowledge of these phenomena. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of high temperature gases, including the plasma state are described, as well as the kinetics of the various chemical phenomena cited above. Numerous results of measurement and computation of vibrational relaxation times, dissociation and reaction rate constants are given, and various ionization and radiative mechanisms and processes are presented. The coupling between these different phenomena is taken into account as well as their interaction with the flow-field. Particular points such as the case of rarefied flows and the inside of the shock wave itself are also examined. Examples of specific non-equilibrium flows are given, generally corresponding to those encountered during spatial missions or in shock tube experiments |

Title | The Hamilton-Type Principle in Fluid Dynamics : Fundamentals and Applications to Magnetohydrodynamics, Thermodynamics, and Astrophysics |
Author(s) | Fierros Palacios, Angel |
Publication | Vienna, Springer Vienna, 2006. |
Description | XXV, 404 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The objective of this book is to contribute to specialized literature with the most significant results obtained by the author in Continuous Mechanics and Astrophysics. The nature of the book is largely determined by the fact that it describes Fluid Dynamics,Magnetohydrodynamics, and Classical Thermodynamics as branches of Lagrange???s Analytical Mechanics; and in that sense, the approach presented in it is markedly different from the treatment given to them in traditional text books. In order to reach that goal, a Hamilton-Type Variational Principle, as the proper mathermatical technique for the theoretical description of the dy- mic state of any fluid is formulated. The scheme is completed proposing a new group of variations regarding the evolution parameter which is time; and with the demonstration of a theorem concerning the invariance of the action integral under continuous and infinitesimal temporary transfor- tions. With all that has been mentioned before and taking into account the methodsof thecalculusof variationsandtheadequateboundaryconditions, a general methodology for the mathematical treatment of fluid flows characteristic of Fluid Dynamics, Magnetohydrodynamics, and also fluids at rest proper of Classical Thermodynamics is presented |

Description | X, 304 p. 127 illus., 7 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Thermodynamics is the foundation of many-body physics and thus of physical chemistry and material science as well. Today new sources of useful energy, energy storage, transport and conversion, requiring development of novel technology, are of rapidly increasing importance. This development strongly affects modern industry. Thus thermodynamics will have to be given more prominence in the science curriculum in colleges and universities - something that is attempted in this book. The structure of this text is simple and transparent, enabling the easy mapping of the text onto a one-semester course syllabus and the attendant study. There are 8 chapters total and one three-part appendix. Throughout the text the student finds numerous examples (solved problems) reaching from cosmic to molecular evolution or from cloud formation to Bose condensation |
