Title | Multispectral Image Sensors Using Metasurfaces |
Author(s) | He, Xin;Beckett, Paul;Unnithan, Ranjith R |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021. |
Description | XV, 112 p. 57 illus., 51 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents how metasurfaces are exploited to develop new low-cost single sensor based multispectral cameras. Multispectral cameras extend the concept of conventional colour cameras to capture images with multiple color bands and with narrow spectral passbands. Images from a multispectral camera can extract significant amount of additional information that the human eye or a normal camera fails to capture and thus have important applications in precision agriculture, forestry, medicine, object identifications, and classifications. Conventional multispectral cameras are made up of multiple image sensors each externally fitted with a narrow passband wavelength filters, optics and multiple electronics. The need for multiple sensors for each band results in a number of problems such as being bulky, power hungry and suffering from image co-registration problems which in turn limits their wide usage. The above problems can be eliminated if a multispectral camera is developed using one single image sensor |

Author(s) | Steglich, Patrick;Heise, Katja |
Publication | Wiesbaden, Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2021. |
Description | VIII, 50 p. 22 illus., 7 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | We are at the crossroads of a new epoch: the age of electronics is being replaced by the age of photonics. This book will introduce you to the fascinating development of photonics, avoiding complicated technical terminology and instead explaining the physical fundamentals in a clear way. Based on this, important developments such as the laser and its applications in industry, research and everyday life are described. Complicated physical properties and technical details are explained to the reader in an understandable way. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Photonik einfach erkl??rt by Patrick Steglich and Katja Heise, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2019.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The content A short history of photonics Examples from industry, research and everyday life Forecasts and limits The target groups Lecturers and students of photonics, optical technologies and optoelectronics Engineers, technicians and physicists, laymen with interest in physical technologies The authors Dr. Patrick Steglich is lecturer for photonics and optical technologies at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau and scientist at the Leibniz Institute for Innovative Microelectronics IHP in Frankfurt (Oder). Katja Heise works as an editor in Berlin. As a trained political scientist and journalist, she specializes in translating complex technical topics into simple language. The authors live together with their son and two daughters in Berlin |

Title | Optical Spatial Solitons in Photorefractive Materials |
Author(s) | Katti, Aavishkar;Yadav, R.A |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021. |
Description | XVII, 169 p. 88 illus., 75 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book highlights recent advances of optical spatial solitons in photorefractive materials ranging broadly from the coupling, modulation instability, effect of pyroelectricity, and the stability of photorefractive solitons, among other topics. Photorefractive solitons have been at the forefront of research because of their formation at low laser powers and unique saturable nonlinearity present in photorefractive materials which supports solitons in (2+1) D. There has been a spurt in research on photorefractive solitons recently, which has contributed to a greater understanding of the theoretical foundation of photorefractive solitons as also of their various interesting and practical applications. The book elucidates the diversity of photorefractive solitons and provides a good resource for students, researchers, and professionals in the area of nonlinear optics |

Title | Mid-infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers for Chaos Secure Communications |
Author(s) | Spitz, Olivier |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XVIII, 166 p. 131 illus., 97 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The mid-infrared domain is a promising optical domain because it holds two transparency atmospheric windows, as well as the fingerprint of many chemical compounds. Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are one of the available sources in this domain and have already been proven useful for spectroscopic applications and free-space communications. This thesis demonstrates how to implement a private free-space communication relying on mid-infrared optical chaos and this requires an accurate cartography of non-linear phenomena in quantum cascade lasers. This private transmission is made possible by the chaos synchronization of two twin QCLs. Chaos in QCLs can be generated under optical injection or external optical feedback. Depending on the parameters of the optical feedback, QCLs can exhibit several non-linear phenomena in addition to chaos. Similarities exist between QCLs and laser diodes when the chaotic dropouts are synchronized with an external modulation, and this effect is known as the entrainment phenomenon. With a cross-polarization reinjection technique, QCLs can generate all-optical square-waves. Eventually, it is possible to trigger optical extreme events in QCLs with tilted optical feedback. All these experimental results allow a better understanding of the non-linear dynamics of QCLs and will extend the potential applications of this kind of semiconductor lasers |

Title | Structured Singular Light Fields |
Author(s) | Otte, Eileen |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XV, 170 p. 63 illus., 60 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Structured singular light is an ubiquitous phenomenon. It is not only created when light refracts at a water surface but can also be found in the blue daytime sky. Such light fields include a spatially varying amplitude, phase, or polarization, enabling the occurrence of optical singularities. As structurally stable units of the light field, these singularities are particularly interesting since they determine its topology. In this excellent book, the author presents a pioneering study of structured singular light, thereby contributing many original approaches. Especially in the field of polarization and its rich number of different types of singularities the book defines and drives a completely new field. The work demonstrates how to control complex polarization singularity networks and their propagation. Additionally, the author pioneers tightly focusing vectorial beams, also developing an urgently needed detection scheme for three-dimensional nanoscale polarization structures. She also studies classical spatial entanglement using structured light, introducing entanglement beating and paraxial spin-orbit-coupling. The book is hallmarked by its comprehensive and thorough way of describing a plethora of different approaches to structure light by amplitude, phase and polarization, as well as the important role of optical singularities. |
