TitleSingle Molecule Toroics : Synthetic Strategies, Theory and Applications
Author(s)Murray, Keith
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXII, 236 p. 106 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book consists of chapters written by international experts on various aspects of single molecule toroics (SMTs).The chapters cover a broad range of relevant topics and highlight the latest advances performed in the field. An up-to-date overview of the emerging SMT architectures is presented while particular attention is given to not only the magnetism and relaxation effects involved but also to the respective applications in advanced electronics and memory devices. The role that lanthanides play -especially that of dysprosium- is discussed, while a thorough analysis using theoretical/ab initio calculations is provided. Since SMTs have grown out of single molecule magnetism (SMM), it is an expanding and topical subject and the present book will engender excitement and interest amongst chemists, physicists, theoreticians and materials scientists. The volume will be of great interest to researchers and graduates working on this topic and particularly those involved in lanthanide chemistry, magnetism and theory.

PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXV, 240 p. 101 illus., 40 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book, based on classroom-tested lecture notes, provides a self-contained one semester undergraduate course on quantum optics, accessible to students (and other readers) who have completed an introductory quantum mechanics course and are familiar with Dirac notation and the concept of entanglement. The book covers canonical quantization, the harmonic oscillator, vacuum fluctuations, Fock states, the single photon state, quantum optical treatment of the beam splitter and the interferometer, multimode quantized light, and coherent and incoherent states. Metrology is a particular area of emphasis, with the book culminating in a treatment of squeezed light and its use in the laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO). The Heisenberg limit is described, along with NOON states and their application in super-sensitivity, super-resolution and quantum lithography. Applications of entanglement and coincidence measurements are described including ghost imaging, quantum illumination, absolute photodetector calibration, and interaction-free measurement. With quantum optics playing a central role in the so-called ???second quantum revolution,??? this book, equipped with plenty of exercises and worked examples, will leave students well prepared to enter graduate study or industry

TitleEngineering Elasticity : Elasticity with less Stress and Strain
Author(s)Hardy, Humphrey
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXV, 271 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook aimed at upper-level undergraduate and graduate engineering students who need to describe the large deformation of elastic materials like soft plastics, rubber, and biological materials. The classical approaches to finite deformations of elastic materials describe a dozen or more measures of stress and strain. These classical approaches require an in-depth knowledge of tensor analysis and provide little instruction as to how to relate the derived equations to the materials to be described. This text, by contrast, introduces only one strain measure and one stress measure. No tensor analysis is required. The theory is applied by showing how to measure material properties and to perform computer simulations for both isotropic and anisotropic materials. The theory can be covered in one chapter for students familiar with Euler-Lagrange techniques, but is also introduced more slowly in several chapters for students not familiar with these techniques. The connection to linear elasticity is provided along with a comparison of this approach to classical elasticity. Explains ably simulation of materials undergoing large deformations Illustrates a simpler mathematical base to build thermodynamic and viscoelastic theories Describes how experimenters can make better numerical descriptions of deformable bodies

TitlePlasmonic Photocatalysis : Principles and Applications
Author(s)Zhang, Zhenglong
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2022.
DescriptionVIII, 91 p. 60 illus., 55 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book highlights the principles, research advances, and applications of plasmonic photocatalysis. As a new class of catalysts, plasmonic nanostructures with the unique ability to harvest solar energy across the entire visible spectrum and produce effective photocatalysis are viewed as a promising pathway for the energy crisis. Although plasmonic catalysis has been widely reported, the excitation mechanism and energy transfer pathway are still controversial. Meanwhile, the latest discovery of catalysis on nanomaterials is less reported. This book outlines the basics of plasmonic photocatalysis, including the electromagnetic properties of metal materials and surface plasmon, and discusses the catalytic mechanisms including the nearfield enhancements, hot electron, and thermal effects. In addition, the measurement methods and current advances on molecules and nanocrystals are presented in detail. Suitable for graduate students and researchers in physics, optics and optical engineering, and materials science, the book will deepen readers' understanding of the interaction between light and nanomaterials and expand their knowledge of the principles and applications of nanophotonics

TitleFrom Intrinsic to Extrinsic Design of Lithium-Ion Battery Layered Oxide Cathode Material Via Doping Strategies
Author(s)Jung, Chul-Ho
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2022.
DescriptionXII, 62 p. 40 illus., 39 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book addresses the comprehensive understanding of Ni-rich layered oxide of lithium-ion batteries cathodes materials, especially focusing on the effect of dopant on the intrinsic and extrinsic effect to its host materials. This book can be divided into three parts, that is, 1. overall understanding of layered oxide system, 2. intrinsic effect of dopant on layered oxides, and 3. extrinsic effect of dopant on layered oxides. To truly understand and discover the fundamental solution (e.g. doping) to improve the Ni-rich layered oxides cathodic performance, understanding the foundation of layered oxide degradation mechanism is the key, thus, the first chapter focuses on discovering the true degradation mechanisms of layered oxides systems. Then, the second and third chapter deals with the effect of dopant on alleviating the fundamental degradation mechanism of Ni-rich layered oxides, which we believe is the first insight ever been provided. The content described in this book will provide research insight to develop high-performance Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials and serve as a guide for those who study energy storage systems

TitleForward Brillouin Scattering in Standard Optical Fibers : Single-Mode, Polarization-Maintaining, and Multi-Core
Author(s)Zadok, Avi;Diamandi, Hilel Hagai;London, Yosef;Bashan, Gil
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXII, 207 p. 78 illus., 76 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book, the first dedicated to the topic, provides a comprehensive treatment of forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in standard optical fibers. SBS interactions between guided light and sound waves have drawn much attention for over fifty years, and optical fibers provide an excellent playground for the study of Brillouin scattering as they support guided modes of both wave types and provide long interaction lengths. This book is dedicated to forward SBS processes that are driven by co-propagating optical fields. The physics of forward SBS is explained in detail, starting from the fundamentals of interactions between guided optical and acoustic waves, with emphasis given to the acoustic modes that are stimulated in the processes. The realization of forward SBS in standard single-mode, polarization-maintaining and multi-core fibers is then discussed in depth. Innovative potential applications in sensors, monitoring of coating layers, lasers, and radio-frequency oscillators are presented. This book introduces the subject to graduate students in optics and applied physics, and it will be of interest to scientists working in fiber-optics, nonlinear optics and opto-mechanics
