TitleStorage Ring-Based Inverse Compton X-ray Sources : Cavity Design, Beamline Development and X-ray Applications
Author(s)G??nther, Benedikt Sebastian
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXXIII, 348 p. 122 illus., 99 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis presents research on novel laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray sources based on inverse Compton scattering and applications of their X-ray radiation using the Munich Compact Light Source (MuCLS) as an example. It provides an introduction to the theory of this laser-electron interaction, laser resonators and X-ray interactions with matter. On this basis, upgrades to the laser system including the development of a new laser optic, X-ray beam stabilisation and two techniques for fast X-ray energy switching of inverse Compton sources are presented. On the application side, the beamline, designed and developed for the inverse Compton X-ray source at the MuCLS, is described before various techniques and applications are demonstrated at this laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray facility. Among them are K-edge subtraction imaging, X-ray phase contrast imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, a new X-ray microscopy technique, called full-field structured-illumination super-resolution X-ray transmission microscopy, is presented. Apart from research conducted at the MuCLS, this thesis contains an in-depth overview on the state of the art of the various types of inverse Compton X-ray sources that have been realised so far. Accordingly, this thesis may serve as a guide and reference work for researchers working with inverse Compton X-ray sources as well as future users of such devices

Abstract NoteThis book highlights advances in the field of THz engineering along with limitations of radio frequency (RF) technology. All engineering applications have been designed to operate over a specific frequency or wavelength range in electromagnetic spectrum. In recent years, the unexplored domain of THz range of electromagnetic spectrum has paved the way for terahertz technology due to its nonionizing nature and sensitivity to water content. A wide range of applications with THz techniques such as terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), biological, medical and pharmaceutical sciences, explosives inspection, information and communication technology (ICT) sector and many more, have potential to be the technology of future. Different designing aspects and evolving application areas are addressed to enrich the technical knowledge of readers. This book provides an overview of state of the art in terms of research and industrial progress in THz spectrum

TitleThe Effect of Layer Orientation on the Fatigue Behavior of 3D Printed PLA Samples
Author(s)Aladwani, Fawaz;Sun, Xiaodong;Es-Said, Omar;Noorani, Rafiq;Ebrahim, Mahsa;Melmed, William;Avchen, Brian;Trumpp, Spencer;Lee, Nicholas;Aliya, Debbie
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023.
DescriptionV, 48 p. 47 illus., 35 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents fused deposition modeling (FDM) which is an additive manufacturing (AM) process to fabricate 3D parts from a build-up of 2D layers. The chapters present an experimental analysis of fatigue characteristics of FDM-processed PLA samples. The results indicate that the concentric build orientation provides highest cycles of fatigue, ultimate strength, and impact energy. The effect of layer orientation on the fatigue behavior of 3D-printed PLA samples is investigated in this case study

PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXIII, 62 p. 21 illus., 13 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book, written by two pioneers in the field, provides a clear and concise description of memristors and other memory elements. It stresses the difference between their mathematical definition and physical reality. The reader will then be able to distinguish between what is experimentally realizable and various fictitious claims that plague the scientific literature. The discussion is kept simple enough that the book should be easily accessible not only to graduate students and researchers in Physics and Engineering, but also to undergraduate students interested in this topic.

TitleOptical Metrology and Optoacoustics in Nondestructive Evaluation of Materials
Author(s)Nazarchuk, Zinoviy;Muravsky, Leonid;Kuryliak, Dozyslav
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2023.
DescriptionXVIII, 401 p. 206 illus., 19 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book includes the description, modeling and realization of new optical metrology techniques for technical diagnostics of materials. Special attention is paid to multi-step phase shifting interferometry with arbitrary phase shifts between interferograms, phase shifting and correlation digital speckle pattern interferometry, optical-digital speckle correlation, and digital image correlation, as well as dynamic speckle patterns analysis. Optoacoustic techniques can be treated as a separate branch of optical metrology and can solve many problems of technical diagnostics, including detection and localization of subsurface defects in laminated composite materials. The utility of such techniques can be increased by illumination of the object via acoustic waves at certain frequencies. Hence, an effective theoretical approach to the modeling of an elastic wave field interaction with an interphase defect, and to defect visualization using dynamic speckle patterns, is also includedin this book. The experimental proof of the proposed approaches was achieved using a specially created hybrid optical-digital system for detection of different subsurface defects. This book is intended for engineers, researchers and students engaged in the field of nondestructive evaluation of materials and technical diagnostics of structural elements, hybrid optical systems, speckle metrology and optoacoustic imaging techniques

TitleQuantum Dot Lasers on Silicon : Nonlinear Properties, Dynamics, and Applications
Author(s)Dong, Bozhang
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXX, 189 p. 103 illus., 83 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides guidelines and design rules for developing high-performance, low-cost, and energy-efficient quantum-dot (QD) lasers for silicon photonic integrated circuits (PIC), optical frequency comb generation, and quantum information systems. To this end, the nonlinear properties and dynamics of QD lasers on silicon are investigated in depth by both theoretical analysis and experiment. This book focuses on four issues encountered in developing silicon PIC: (1) The instability of laser emission caused by the chip-scale back-reflection. (2) The degradation of laser performance at a high operating temperature. (3) The limited phase noise level and optical bandwidth of the laser, which are the bottlenecks for further increasing the transmission capacity. (4) The need for a platform with rich optical nonlinearities for future integrated quantum technologies. The promising results presented in each of these areas will enable scientists, researchers, and engineers to make an informed judgment when utilizing the QD laser for applications ranging from classical silicon PIC to integrated quantum technologies
