Specifically, our planet is affected by its near environment, in particular the small bodies in the Solar System. The various articles take the reader through the Galaxy-Solar System connection to the orbital dynamics of the small bodies and to their number and distribution in near-Earth space. The hazards of the impacts of small bodies on Earth are evaluated, and the geophysical records of such impacts are discussed. The book takes the reader to the forefront of research on both impact cratering and the origin and evolution of small bodies in the Solar System. Thus it brings together two subjects, geophysics and astronomy, which are usually discussed in separate volumes but are closely knit together in this particular area of research |

| Abstract Note | In the period 28 November 1971 to 12 February 1972. during three passages of the North Atlantic. the diurnal variation of ionospheric absorption L was measured by method Al at 1. 7 and 5. 0 MHz as a function of geographic and geomagnetic parameters. The measurements were carried out. applying a new equipment especially designed for mobile expeditions. on board a cargo vessel (mv "Hanau" of Hapag?? 0 0 0 0 -Lloyd) moving between Hamburg (53 N; 10 E) and La Guaira (11 N; 67 W). Simultaneously. in the framework of the European Cooperation on Winter Anomaly studies. measurements of absorption were made at various other locations and the data used as a basis for comparison [circuits Norddeich-Lindau 0 0 0 0 (A3; 2. 61 MHz; 52. 6 N; 8. 7 E) and Aranjuez-Balerma (A3; 2. 83 MHz; 38. 6 N; 5. 2 W). station Lan?? 0 0 caster (AI; 2. 14 MHz; 53 52' N; 2 45' W) 1 . Aboard. the diurnal variation of absorption showed large modifications from day to day. The behaviour of L (cos X = 0. 2) waS somewhat different at each passage 0 0 but showed a common trend: The winter anomaly vanished in a transit zone between 34 and 44 N cen?? 0 tered at about 39 N; the same was true for the behaviour of L (cos X = 1) |

| Abstract Note | For a long period Soil Mechanics has remained at the semi-empirica stage, and only a few decades ago it has shown a tendency to become a fundamental science. However, this evolution is taking place slowly; in spite of the efforts of numerous research scientists, the very complex rheological laws of soils are still not well known. Even if these laws were elucidated, it would take a long time still to deduce simple rules from them for reliable and convenient use in current practical engineer?? ing. In the pursuit of these distant aims - and of others more imme?? diate - fundamental research and applied research are very active, both in Rheology and Soil Mechanics. The complexity of the problems to be solved should incite the laboratory researchers and the engineers to a continuous collaboration. | Abstract Note | This book which is the outcome of a NATO-Advanced Study Institute on Mod?? elling the Ocean Circulation and Geochemical Tracer Transport is concerned with using models to infer the ocean circulation. Understanding our climate is one of the major problems of the late twentieth century. The possible climatic changes resulting from the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide and other trace gases are of primary interest and the ocean pla. ys a ma. jor role in determining the magnitude, temporal evolution and regional distribution of those changes. Because of the poor observational basis the ocean general circulation is not well understood. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) which is now underway is an attempt to improve our knowledge of ocean dynamics and thermodynamics on global scales relevant to climate change. Despite those efforts, the oceanic data base is likely to remain scarce and it is crucial to use appropriate methods in order to extract the maximum amount of information from observations. The book contains a thorough analysis of methods to combine data of val'ious types with dynamical concepts, and to assimilate data directly into ocean models. The properties of geocl;temical tracers such as HC, He, Tritium and Freons and how they may be used to impose integral constraints on the ocean circulation are discussed |
