Title | From Newton to Mandelbrot : A Primer in Theoretical Physics with Fractals for the Macintosh (R) |
Author(s) | Stauffer, Dietrich;Stanley, H. Eugene |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1996. |
Description | XII, 211 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | From Newton to Mandelbrot. A Primer in Theoretical Physics with Fractals for the Macintosh ( ) takes the student on a tour of the most important landmarks of theoretical physics: classical, quantum, and statistical mechanics, relativity, electrodynamics, and, the most modern and exciting of all, the physics of fractals. The treatment is confined to the essentials of each area, and short computer programs, numerous problems, and beautiful color illustrations round off this unusual textbook. Ideally suited for a one-year course in theoretical physics it will also prove useful in preparing and revising for exams. This edition is corrected and includes a new appendix on elementary particle physics, answers to all short questions, and a Macintosh diskette where a selection of executable programs exploring the fractal concept can be found. The Diskette The program FRACTAL DIMENSION can be used on any 68030-, 68040,- or PowerPC-based Macintosh with 4 Mb RAM and 256 color display running System 6.7 - 7.5 - Sierpinski gasket - Random walk - Self-avoiding walk - Percolation - Diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) - Neuron shape |

Title | Physics and National Socialism : An Anthology of Primary Sources |
Author(s) | Hentschel, Klaus |
Publication | Basel, 1. Birkh??user Basel
2. Imprint: Birkh??user, 1996. |
Description | 406 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | 1 Aim and General Description of the Anthology The purpose of this anthology is to introduce the English speaking public to the wide spectrum of texts authored predominently by physicists portraying the ac?? tual and perceived role of physics in the Nazi state. Up to now no broad and well?? balanced documentation of German physics during this time has been available in English, despite the significant role physics has played both politically (e. g. , in weaponry planning) and ideologically (e. g. , in the controversy over the value of theoretical ('Jewish') vs. experimental ('Aryan') physics), and even though prominent figures like the scientist-philosopher and emigre Albert Einstein and the controversial nuclear physicist Werner Heisenberg have become household names. This anthology will attempt to bridge this gap by presenting contempo?? rary documents and eye-witness accounts by the physicists themselves. Authors were chosen to represent the various political opinions and specialties within the physics community, omitting some of the more readily accessible texts by leading physicists (e. g. , Einstein, Heisenberg, Lenard) in favor of those by less well-known but nonetheless important figures (e. g. , Finkelnburg, Max Wien, Ramsauer). In this way we hope not only to circumvent the constricted 'Great Men' approach to history but also to offer a broader picture of the activities and conflicts within the field and the effects of the political forces exerted upon them |

Title | Photoelectron Spectroscopy : Principles and Applications |
Author(s) | H??fner, Stefan |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XII, 515 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Photoelectron Spectroscopy presents an up-to-date introduction to the field by treating comprehensively the electronic structures of atoms, molecules, solids and surfaces. Brief descriptions are given of inverse photoemission, spin-polarized photoemission and photoelectron diffraction. Experimental aspects are considered throughout the book, and the results are carefully interpreted by theory. A wealth of measured data is presented in the form of tables for easy use by experimentalists |

Title | Synergetics : An Introduction Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions and Self-Organization in Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
Author(s) | Haken, Hermann |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1977. |
Description | online resource |
Abstract Note | The spontaneous formation of well organized structures out of germs or even out of chaos is one of the most fascinating phenomena and most challenging problems scientists are confronted with. Such phenomena are an experience of our daily life when we observe the growth of plants and animals. Thinking of much larger time scales, scientists are led into the problems of evolution, and, ultimately, of the origin of living matter. When we try to explain or understand in some sense these extremely complex biological phenomena it is a natural question, whether pro?? cesses of self-organization may be found in much simpler systems of the un?? animated world. In recent years it has become more and more evident that there exist numerous examples in physical and chemical systems where well organized spatial, temporal, or spatio-temporal structures arise out of chaotic states. Furthermore, as in living of these systems can be maintained only by a flux of organisms, the functioning energy (and matter) through them. In contrast to man-made machines, which are to exhibit special structures and functionings, these structures develop spon?? devised It came as a surprise to many scientists that taneously-they are self-organizing. numerous such systems show striking similarities in their behavior when passing from the disordered to the ordered state. This strongly indicates that the function?? of such systems obeys the same basic principles. In our book we wish to explain ing such basic principles and underlying conceptions and to present the mathematical tools to cope with them |

Title | The Biological Chemistry of Iron : A Look at the Metabolism of Iron and Its Subsequent Uses in Living Organisms Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, August 13 ??? September 4, 1981 |
Author(s) | Dunford, B.H;Dolphin, D;Raymond, K.N;Sieker, L |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1982. |
Description | XIII, 415 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The results of a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) entitled "Coordination Chemistry Environments in Iron-Containing Proteins and Enzymes - Including Smaller Molecules and Model Systems" are summarized in this book. The ASI was held in the Province of Alberta, Canada, from August 23 to September 4, 1981. The first half of the conference was held on the campus of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and the second half at the Overlander Lodge, Hinton. Two other conferences had the greatest impact upon the planning for this ASI. One was a NATO ASI held in Tomar, Portugal in September of 1979, entitled "Metal Ions in Biology". Among the organizers for that conference were Allen Hill and Antonio Xavier; we are happy to acknowledge their beneficial influence on our subsequent conference. The other most influential conference was one organized by Ralph Wilkins and Dennis Darnell entitled "Methods for Determining Metal Ion Environments in Proteins" which was held in Las Cruces, New Mexico, U.S.A., January 10-12, 1979. The Las Cruces conference invited lectures were published as Volume 2 of "Advances in Inorganic Biochemistry", G. Eichhorn and L. Marzilli, editors |
