TitlePredicting the Future : Completing Models of Observed Complex Systems
Author(s)Abarbanel, Henry
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2013.
DescriptionXVI, 238 p. 97 illus., 91 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NotePredicting the Future: Completing Models of Observed Complex Systems provides a general framework for the discussion of model building and validation across a broad spectrum of disciplines. This is accomplished through the development of an exact path integral for use in transferring information from observations to a model of the observed system. Through many illustrative examples drawn from models in neuroscience, fluid dynamics, geosciences, and nonlinear electrical circuits, the concepts are exemplified in detail. Practical numerical methods for approximate evaluations of the path integral are explored, and their use in designing experiments and determining a model's consistency with observations is investigated. Using highly instructive examples, the problems of data assimilation and the means to treat them are clearly illustrated. This book will be useful for students and practitioners of physics, neuroscience, regulatory networks, meteorology and climate science, network dynamics, fluid dynamics, and other systematic investigations of complex systems

TitleRhythms in Physiological Systems : Proceedings of the International Symposium at Schlo?? Elmau, Bavaria, October 22???25, 1990
Author(s)Haken, Hermann;Koepchen, Hans P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionIX, 363 p : online resource
Abstract NoteRhythms are a basic phenomenon in all physiological systems. They cover an enormous range of frequencies with periods from the order of milliseconds up to some years. They are described by many disciplines and are investigated usually in the context of the physiology of the respective function or organ. The importance given to the research on rhythmicity is quite different in different systems. In some cases where the functional significance is obvious rhythms are at the center of interest, as in the case of respiration or locomotion. In other fields they are considered more or less as interesting epiphenomena or at best as indicators without essential functional significance, as in the case of cardiovascular or EEG rhythms. Recently the study of physiological rhythms has attracted growing interest in several fields, especially with respect to rhythm research in humans and its rapidly spreading applications in basic behavioral research, and as a diagnostic tool in clinical medicine. This development was favored by two methodological and conceptual ad?? vances: on the one hand, the availability of non-invasive methods of continu?? ous recording of physiological parameters and their computer-assisted evaluation, and on the other, the rapid development of theoretical analyses, for example, the understanding of dynamic systems, the generation of coordinated macroscopic pro?? cesses in systems comprising many single elements, and the mathematical tools for treating nonlinear oscillators and their mutual coupling

TitleBrain Function and Oscillations : Volume II: Integrative Brain Function. Neurophysiology and Cognitive Processes
Author(s)Ba??ar, Erol
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXXXIX, 476 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book establishes a brain theory based on neural oscillations with a temporal relation to a well-defined event. New findings about oscillations at the cellular level show striking parallels with EEG and MEG measurements. The authors embrace both the level of single neurons and that of the brain as a whole, showing how this approach advances our knowledge about the functional significance of the brain's electrical activity. They are related to sensory and cognitive tasks, leading towards an "integrative neurophysiology". The book will appeal to scientists and graduate students. This two-volume treatise has the special features that: - powerful mathematical algorithms are used; - concepts of synergetics, synchronization of cell assemblies provide a new theory of evoked potentials; - the EEG frequencies are considered as a type of alphabet of brain function; - based on the results described, brain oscillations are correlated with multiple functions, including sensory registration, perception, movement and cognitive processes related to attention, learning and memory; - the superposition principle of event-related oscillations and brain Feynmann diagrams are introduced as metaphors from quantum theory

TitlePhase Resetting in Medicine and Biology : Stochastic Modelling and Data Analysis
Author(s)Tass, Peter A
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXIII, 329 p. 148 illus., 6 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book presents a new theoretical approach to phase resetting and stimulation-induced synchronization and desynchronization in a population of oscillators. The author uses stochastic methods from statistical mechanics and applies his theory to models of practical importance in physiology and neuroscience. He makes the book accessible to readers not familiar with the mathematical formalism. The results are presented and additionally explained without formulae, particularly with a view to the interests of neuroscientists. The author also proposes improvements to stimulation techniques as used by neurologists and neurosurgeons in the context of Parkinson's disease and MEG/EEG data analysis. The book is written for researchers and graduate students but it can also benefit medical practitioners

TitleQuantum Mechanics on Phase Space
Author(s)Schroeck Jr., Franklin E
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996.
DescriptionXVI, 672 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this monograph, we shall present a new mathematical formulation of quantum theory, clarify a number of discrepancies within the prior formulation of quantum theory, give new applications to experiments in physics, and extend the realm of application of quantum theory well beyond physics. Here, we motivate this new formulation and sketch how it developed. Since the publication of Dirac's famous book on quantum mechanics [Dirac, 1930] and von Neumann's classic text on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics two years later [von Neumann, 1932], there have appeared a number of lines of development, the intent of each being to enrich quantum theory by extra?? polating or even modifying the original basic structure. These lines of development have seemed to go in different directions, the major directions of which are identified here: First is the introduction of group theoretical methods [Weyl, 1928; Wigner, 1931] with the natural extension to coherent state theory [Klauder and Sudarshan, 1968; Peremolov, 1971]. The call for an axiomatic approach to physics [Hilbert, 1900; Sixth Problem] led to the development of quantum logic [Mackey, 1963; Jauch, 1968; Varadarajan, 1968, 1970; Piron, 1976; Beltrametti & Cassinelli, 1981], to the creation of the operational approach [Ludwig, 1983-85, 1985; Davies, 1976] with its application to quantum communication theory [Helstrom, 1976; Holevo, 1982), and to the development of the C* approach [Emch, 1972]. An approach through stochastic differential equations ("stochastic mechanics") was developed [Nelson, 1964, 1966, 1967]

TitleSynergetics of the Brain : Proceedings of the International Symposium on Synergetics at Schlo?? Elmau, Bavaria, May 2 ??? 7, 1983
Author(s)Basar, E;Flohr, H;Haken, Hermann;Mandell, A. J
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1983.
DescriptionVIII, 380 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSynergetics may be considered as an interdisciplinary effort dealing with the gene?? ral problem of how science can cope with complex systems. The preceding symposia on synergetics were devoted to systems of physics, chemistry and partly also biolo?? gy and sociology. It was possible to develop adequate concepts to describe and even to calculate evolving macroscopic spatial, temporal, and functional structures which emerge through self-organization of the individual parts of the systems under con?? sideration. This book contains the invited papers presented at the Symposium on the Synerge?? tics of the brain, Schloss Elmau, Bavaria, May 2 to 7, 1983. The inclusion of this topic in the synergetics enterprise represents a big step towards a treatment of complex systems. Most probably the human brain is the most complex system we know of. As the organizers believe, this symposium provides the reader with a good cross section of experimental results and theoretical approaches to cope with the complex problems of structure and function of the brain. It was generally felt that such a joint meeting between experimentalists and theoreticians is of great importance for future development of this field. Modern experimental methods, e. g. multielectrode derivations allow or will allow us, in short, to collect huge amounts of data. Simi?? larly high-speed computers will flood us with an enormous number of outputs once the basic model equations have been chosen

TitleNeural Networks : An Introduction
Author(s)M??ller, Berndt;Reinhardt, Joachim
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionXIII, 266 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe mysteries of the human mind have fascinated scientists and philosophers alike for centuries. Descartes identified our ability to think as the foundation stone of ontological philosophy. Others have taken the human mind as evidence of the existence of supernatural powers, or even of God. Serious scientific in?? vestigation, which began about half a century ago, has partially answered some of the simpler questions (such as how the brain processes visual information), but has barely touched upon the deeper ones concerned with the nature of consciousness and the possible existence of mental features transcending the biological substance of the brain, often encapsulated in the concept "soul". Besides the physiological and philosophical approaches to these questions, so impressively presented and contrasted in the recent book by Popper and Ec?? cles [P077), studies of formal networks composed of binary-valued information?? processing units, highly abstracted versions of biological neurons, either by mathematical analysis or by computer simulation, have emerged as a third route towards a better understanding of the brain, and possibly of the human mind. Long remaining - with the exception of a brief period in the early 1960s - a rather obscure research interest of a small group of dedicated scientists scattered around the world, neural-network research has recently sprung into the limelight as a "fashionable" research field
