Author(s)Gon??alves, Bruno;Menezes, Ronaldo;Sinatra, Roberta;Zlatic, Vinko
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXIV, 262 p. 88 illus., 75 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book collects the works presented at the 8th International Conference on Complex Networks (CompleNet) 2017 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on March 21-24, 2017. CompleNet aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners working in areas related to complex networks. The past two decades has witnessed an exponential increase in the number of publications within this field. From biological systems to computer science, from economic to social systems, complex networks are becoming pervasive in many fields of science. It is this interdisciplinary nature of complex networks that CompleNet aims at addressing. The last decades have seen the emergence of complex networks as the language with which a wide range of complex phenomena in fields as diverse as physics, computer science, and medicine (to name a few) can be properly described and understood. This book provides a view of the state-of-the-art in this dynamic field and covers topics such as network controllability, social structure, online behavior, recommendation systems, and network structure

TitleKalman Filtering : with Real-Time Applications
Author(s)Chui, Charles K;Chen, Guanrong
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXVIII, 247 p. 34 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis new edition presents a thorough discussion of the mathematical theory and computational schemes of Kalman filtering. The filtering algorithms are derived via different approaches, including a direct method consisting of a series of elementary steps, and an indirect method based on innovation projection. Other topics include Kalman filtering for systems with correlated noise or colored noise, limiting Kalman filtering for time-invariant systems, extended Kalman filtering for nonlinear systems, interval Kalman filtering for uncertain systems, and wavelet Kalman filtering for multiresolution analysis of random signals. Most filtering algorithms are illustrated by using simplified radar tracking examples. The style of the book is informal, and the mathematics is elementary but rigorous. The text is self-contained, suitable for self-study, and accessible to all readers with a minimum knowledge of linear algebra, probability theory, and system engineering. Over 100 exercises and problems with solutions help deepen the knowledge. This new edition has a new chapter on filtering communication networks and data processing, together with new exercises and new real-time applications

TitleWandering Towards a Goal : How Can Mindless Mathematical Laws Give Rise to Aims and Intention?
Author(s)Aguirre, Anthony;Foster, Brendan;Merali, Zeeya
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionVIII, 254 p. 46 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis collection of prize-winning essays addresses the controversial question of how meaning and goals can emerge in a physical world governed by mathematical laws. What are the prerequisites for a system to have goals? What makes a physical process into a signal? Does eliminating the homunculus solve the problem? The three winning essays, by Larissa Albantakis, Carlo Rovelli and Jochen Szangolies tackle exactly these challenges, while many other aspects (agency, the role of the observer, causality versus teleology, ghosts in the machine etc.) put in an appearance in the other award winning contributions. These seventeen imaginative, stimulating and often entertaining essays are enhanced versions of the prize-winning entries to the FQXi essay competition in 2017. The Foundational Questions Institute, FQXi, catalyzes, supports, and disseminates research on questions at the foundations of physics and cosmology, particularly new frontiers and innovative ideas integral to a deep understanding of reality, but unlikely to be supported by conventional funding sources

TitleApplication of FPGA to Real???Time Machine Learning : Hardware Reservoir Computers and Software Image Processing
Author(s)Antonik, Piotr
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXXII, 171 p. 68 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book lies at the interface of machine learning ??? a subfield of computer science that develops algorithms for challenging tasks such as shape or image recognition, where traditional algorithms fail ??? and photonics ??? the physical science of light, which underlies many of the optical communications technologies used in our information society. It provides a thorough introduction to reservoir computing and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Recently, photonic implementations of reservoir computing (a machine learning algorithm based on artificial neural networks) have made a breakthrough in optical computing possible. In this book, the author pushes the performance of these systems significantly beyond what was achieved before. By interfacing a photonic reservoir computer with a high-speed electronic device (an FPGA), the author successfully interacts with the reservoir computer in real time, allowing him to considerably expand its capabilities and range of possible applications. Furthermore, the author draws on his expertise in machine learning and FPGA programming to make progress on a very different problem, namely the real-time image analysis of optical coherence tomography for atherosclerotic arteries

TitleMachine Learning at the Belle II Experiment : The Full Event Interpretation and Its Validation on Belle Data
Author(s)Keck, Thomas
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXI, 174 p. 84 illus., 16 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explores how machine learning can be used to improve the efficiency of expensive fundamental science experiments. The first part introduces the Belle and Belle II experiments, providing a detailed description of the Belle to Belle II data conversion tool, currently used by many analysts. The second part covers machine learning in high-energy physics, discussing the Belle II machine learning infrastructure and selected algorithms in detail. Furthermore, it examines several machine learning techniques that can be used to control and reduce systematic uncertainties. The third part investigates the important exclusive B tagging technique, unique to physics experiments operating at the ?? resonances, and studies in-depth the novel Full Event Interpretation algorithm, which doubles the maximum tag-side efficiency of its predecessor. The fourth part presents a complete measurement of the branching fraction of the rare leptonic B decay ???B???tau nu???, which is used to validate the algorithms discussed in previous parts

TitleSupervised Learning with Quantum Computers
Author(s)Schuld, Maria;Petruccione, Francesco
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXIII, 287 p. 83 illus., 48 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteQuantum machine learning investigates how quantum computers can be used for data-driven prediction and decision making. The books summarises and conceptualises ideas of this relatively young discipline for an audience of computer scientists and physicists from a graduate level upwards. It aims at providing a starting point for those new to the field, showcasing a toy example of a quantum machine learning algorithm and providing a detailed introduction of the two parent disciplines. For more advanced readers, the book discusses topics such as data encoding into quantum states, quantum algorithms and routines for inference and optimisation, as well as the construction and analysis of genuine ``quantum learning models''. A special focus lies on supervised learning, and applications for near-term quantum devices
