Title | Consciousness and Science Fiction |
Author(s) | Broderick, Damien |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XXII, 196 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Science fiction explores the wonderful, baffling and wildly entertaining aspects of a universe unimaginably old and vast, and with a future even more immense. It reaches into that endless cosmos with the tools of rational investigation and storytelling. At the core of both science and science fiction is the engaged human mind--a consciousness that sees and feels and thinks and loves. But what is this mind, this aware and self-aware consciousness that seems unlike anything else we experience? What makes consciousness the Hard Problem of philosophy, still unsolved after millennia of probing? This book looks into the heart of this mystery - at the science and philosophy of consciousness and at many inspiring fictional examples - and finds strange, challenging answers. The book's content and entertaining style will appeal equally to science fiction enthusiasts and scholars, including cognitive and neuroscientists, as well as philosophers of mind. It is a refreshing romp through the science and science fiction of consciousness |

Title | New Light Through Old Windows: Exploring Contemporary Science Through 12 Classic Science Fiction Tales |
Author(s) | Webb, Stephen |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XIII, 305 p. 22 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the reader with some of the earliest classic SF short stories ??? all of them published between 1858 and 1934, featuring both well-known and long-forgotten writers ??? dealing for the first time with topics to which science had (some) answers only at much later stages. This includes aspects of alien life forms, transmogrification, pandemics, life on Mars, android robots, big data, matter transmission and impact events to name but a few. The short stories are reprinted in full alongside extensive commentaries which also examine some of the latest scientific thinking surrounding the story???s main theme and provide the reader with suggestions for further reading. Since gaining a BSc in physics from the University of Bristol and a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Manchester, Stephen Webb has worked in a variety of universities in the UK. He has published an undergraduate textbook Measuring the Universe - The Cosmological Distance Ladder (1999) as well as several popular science books, among them Out of this World - Colliding Universes, Branes, Strings, and Other Wild Ideas of Modern Physics in 2004, New Eyes on the Universe - Twelve Cosmic Mysteries and the Tools We Need to Solve Them in 2012, the second edition of If the Universe Is Teeming with Aliens ... WHERE IS EVERYBODY? Seventy-Five Solutions to the Fermi Paradox and the Problem of Extraterrestrial Life in 2015, All the Wonder that Would Be - Exploring Past Notions of the Future in 2017, also published as part of Springer???s Science and Fiction series, as well as recently, Clash of Symbols - A ride through the riches of glyphs. His 2018 TED talk on aliens has to date been watched more than 2.33 million times |

Title | Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons : Theory, Learning and Applications |
Author(s) | Aizenberg, Igor;Aizenberg, Naum N;Vandewalle, Joos P.L |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 2000. |
Description | IV, 276 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons deals with two new types of neurons: multi-valued neurons and universal binary neurons. These neurons are based on complex number arithmetic and are hence much more powerful than the typical neurons used in artificial neural networks. Therefore, networks with such neurons exhibit a broad functionality. They can not only realise threshold input/output maps but can also implement any arbitrary Boolean function. Two learning methods are presented whereby these networks can be trained easily. The broad applicability of these networks is proven by several case studies in different fields of application: image processing, edge detection, image enhancement, super resolution, pattern recognition, face recognition, and prediction. The book is hence partitioned into three almost equally sized parts: a mathematical study of the unique features of these new neurons, learning of networks of such neurons, and application of such neural networks. Most of this work was developed by the first two authors over a period of more than 10 years and was only available in the Russian literature. With this book we present the first comprehensive treatment of this important class of neural networks in the open Western literature. Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons is intended for anyone with a scholarly interest in neural network theory, applications and learning. It will also be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of image processing, pattern recognition, control and robotics |

Title | Adaptivity and Learning : An Interdisciplinary Debate |
Author(s) | K??hn, Reimer;Menzel, Randolf;Menzel, Wolfram;Ratsch, Ulrich;Richter, Michael M;Stamatescu, Ion-Olimpiu |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XII, 403 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Adaptivity and learning have in recent decades become a common concern of scientific disciplines. These issues have arisen in mathematics, physics, biology, informatics, economics, and other fields more or less simultaneously. The aim of this publication is the interdisciplinary discourse on the phenomenon of learning and adaptivity. Different perspectives are presented and compared to find fruitful concepts for the disciplines involved. The authors select problems showing representative traits concerning the frame up, the methods and the achievements rather than to present extended overviews. To foster interdisciplinary dialogue, this book presents diverse perspectives from various scientific fields, including: - The biological perspective: e.g., physiology, behaviour; - The mathematical perspective: e.g., algorithmic and stochastic learning; - The physics perspective: e.g., learning for artificial neural networks; - The "learning by experience" perspective: reinforcement learning, social learning, artificial life; - The cognitive perspective: e.g., deductive/inductive procedures, learning and language learning as a high level cognitive process; - The application perspective: e.g., robotics, control, knowledge engineering |

Title | Models of Neural Networks IV : Early Vision and Attention |
Author(s) | van Hemmen, J. Leo;Cowan, Jack D;Domany, Eytan |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2002. |
Description | XIII, 413 p. 87 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Close this book for a moment and look around you. You scan the scene by directing your attention, and gaze, at certain specific objects. Despite the background, you discern them. The process is partially intentional and partially preattentive. How all this can be done is described in the fourth volume of Models of Neural Networks devoted to Early Vision and Atten?? tion that you are holding in your hands. Early vision comprises the first stages of visual information processing. It is as such a scientific challenge whose clarification calls for a penetrating review. Here you see the result. The Heraeus Foundation (Hanau) is to be thanked for its support during the initial phase of this project. John Hertz, who has extensive experience in both computational and ex?? perimental neuroscience, provides in "Neurons, Networks, and Cognition" to neural modeling. John Van Opstal explains in a theoretical introduction "The Gaze Control System" how the eye's gaze control is performed and presents a novel theoretical description incorporating recent experimental results. We then turn to the relay stations thereafter, the lateral genicu?? late nucleus (LGN) and the primary visual cortex. Their anatomy, phys?? iology, functional relations, and ensuing response properties are carefully analyzed by Klaus Funke et al. in "Integrating Anatomy and Physiology of the Primary Visual Pathway: From LGN to Cortex", one of the most comprehensive reviews that is available at the moment |
