TitleIUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Instability and Transition in Three-Dimensional Boundary Layers : Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Manchester, U.K., 17???20 July 1995
Author(s)Duck, Peter W;Hall, Philip
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996.
DescriptionXVIII, 446 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMost fluid flows of practical importance are fully three-dimensional, so the non-linear instability properties of three-dimensional flows are of particular interest. In some cases the three-dimensionality may have been caused by a finite amplitude disturbance whilst, more usually, the unperturbed state is three-dimensional. Practical applications where transition is thought to be associated with non-linearity in a three- dimensional flow arise, for example, in aerodynamics (swept wings, engine nacelles, etc.), turbines and aortic blood flow. Here inviscid `cross-flow' disturbances as well as Tollmien-Schlichting and G??rtler vortices can all occur simultaneously and their mutual non-linear behaviour must be understood if transition is to be predicted. The non-linear interactions are so complex that usually fully numerical or combined asymptotic/numerical methods must be used. Moreover, in view of the complexity of the instability processes, there is also a growing need for detailed and accurate experimental information. Carefully conducted tests allow us to identify those elements of a particular problem which are dominant. This assists in both the formulation of a relevant theoretical problem and the subsequent physical validation of predictions. It should be noted that the demands made upon the skills of the experimentalist are high and that the tests can be extremely sophisticated - often making use of the latest developments in flow diagnostic techniques, automated high speed data gathering, data analysis, fast processing and presentation

Author(s)Deville, Michel;Gavrilakis, Spyros;Ryhming, Inge L
PublicationWiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Vieweg+Teubner Verlag 2. Vieweg+Teubner Verlag, 1996.
DescriptionXIV, 394 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe IMACS-COST conference on "Computational Fluid Dynamics, Three-Dimensional Complex Flows" was held in Lausanne, Switzerland, September 13 - 15, 1995. The scien?? tific sponsors of the conference were ??? IMACS: International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation, ??? COST: European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research, ??? ERCOFTAC: European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combus?? tion. The scientific interests of the IMACS and ERCOFTAC associations are closely related to computational fluid dynamics whereas the European Union programme COST covers a wider range of scientific subjects. The COST' Action F1' launched in 1992 by Professor I. L. Ryhming deals with "Complex three-dimensional viscous flows: prediction, modelling, manipulation and control". It has several subtopics among which numerical methods and modelling issues are the main areas of research and development. The meeting gathered together eighty-seven scientists, engineers and researchers from sev?? enteen countries: Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America. All major numerical approximation methods were discussed: finite differences, finite volumes, finite elements, spectral methods. The topics covered by the sixty communications spanned the full spectrum of computational fluid dynam?? ics: direct numerical simulation, large-eddy simulation, turbulence modelling, free surface flows, non Newtonian fluids, thermal convection, etc

TitleAdiabatic Waves in Liquid-Vapor Systems : IUTAM Symposium G??ttingen, 28.8.???1.9.1989
Author(s)Meier, Gerd E.A;Thompson, Philip A
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionXVII, 436 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe planning for the IUTAM Symposium on Adiabatic Waves in Liquid-Vapor Systems began in May of 1986 in G5ttingen. The Symposium was held in August of 1989 in the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung. The invitations to participants suggested that the written papers concern Fast Adiabatic Phase Changes in Fluids and Related Phenomena. Particular topics suggested were: Liquefaction shockwaves and Shock splitting; Evaporation waves; Condensation in Laval nozzles and turbines; Stability in multiphase shocks; Non-equilibrium and near-critical phenomena; Nucleation in dynamic systems; Structure of transition layers; Acoustic phenomena in two?? phase systems and Cavitation waves. All of these topics should have been treated with emphasis on physical results, new phenomena and theoretical models. Participants from fourteen nations took part in the Symposium and presented papers which were within the range of suggested topics. The organization and execution of the Symposium was performed by the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung in G5ttingen. In particular, the meeting has been promoted under the leadership of Professor Dr. E.-A. MUller, who has for many years given his support for international exchanges in science. The detailed work of organization up to and during the Symposium was in large part due to Dr. T. Kowalewski, who served as Symposium Secretary

DescriptionXIII, 343 p : online resource
Abstract NoteGas Phase Chemical Reachtion Systems consists of edited papers presented at the International Symposion Gas Phase Chemical Reaction Systems: Experiments and Models 100 Years after Max Bodenstein, held at Heidelberg. It is divided into six sections, reflecting the diversity of the topics discussed. Part I is devoted to experimental reaction dynamics studies employing laser and molecular-beam techniques. Part II is the theoretical counterpart of Part I. Part III summarizes the current status of the Bodenstein (H2+I2) "textbook reaction" with experimental and theoretical results. Part IV shows the different approaches for the calculation of state-specific and thermal rate data. Part V includes papers from the "heterogeneous reactions" session and Part VI is devoted to the mathematical modelling of turbulence, reactive flows and complex chemical reaction systems

TitleFluid Dynamics I / Str??mungsmechanik I
Author(s)Truesdell, C.A
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1959.
DescriptionVI, 472 p : online resource
Abstract Note343 Whilst this may be so it is also true that this in itself is not sufficient to deter?? mine it completely. In fact the extent of the dead air region and the behaviour of the shear layer are also of prime importance and in short a unified treatment comprising external flow, boundary layer, shear layer and dead air region becomes necessary to complete the investigation. This would take us outside the scope of the present article and for the substantial progress that has been made towards such a treatment the reader is referred to a paper by HOLDER and GADD 1 and its comprehensive list of references. v. Heat transfer in incompressible boundary layers. 25. Introduction. The term fluid includes gases and liquids. Both gases and liquids are to some extent compressible but in many problems of fluid flow the density changes occurring are small. When they are small enough to be negligible we can regard the flow as incompressible. In Chap. IV we have established the equations for compressible flow of gases and these can of course be used to deter?? mine when density changes in a gas flow are in fact negligible. Broadly speaking this will be so when the temperature changes as determined by the energy equation are small enough

TitleAerothermodynamics in Combustors : IUTAM Symposium Taipei, Taiwan, 1991
Author(s)Lee, Richard S.L;Whitelaw, James H;Wung, T.S
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionIX, 353 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA Symposium on Aerothermodynamics of Combustors was held at the Institute of Applied Mechanics of the National Taiwan University from 3 to 5 June 1991 and was attended by 130 delegates from eight countries. The topics of the forty formal presentations included measurements and calculations of isothermal simulations and of combusting flows with one and two phases, and with consideration of configurations ranging from simple diffusion to gas-turbine flows. The discussions inside and outside of the Symposium Hall were lively and an open forum session demonstrated the range of opinions currently and strongly held. The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics initiated the Symposium under the chairmanship of Professor R S L Lee and with the Scientific Committee listed below. It benefited from sponsorship, again as listed below, and from contributors who presented interesting and up-to-date descriptions of their research. Invited lectures were delivered by Professors R Bilger and F Weinberg and set the scene in terms of quality of material and presentation
