Title | Theoretical Study on Correlation Effects in Topological Matter |
Author(s) | Isobe, Hiroki |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2017. |
Description | XII, 136 p. 46 illus., 41 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis elucidates electron correlation effects in topological matter whose electronic states hold nontrivial topological properties robust against small perturbations. In addition to a comprehensive introduction to topological matter, this thesis provides a new perspective on correlated topological matter. The book comprises three subjects, in which electron correlations in different forms are considered. The first focuses on Coulomb interactions for massless Dirac fermions. Using a perturbative approach, the author reveals emergent Lorentz invariance in a low-energy limit and discusses how to probe the Lorentz invariance experimentally. The second subject aims to show a principle for synthesizing topological insulators with common, light elements. The interplay between the spin???orbit interaction and electron correlation is considered, and Hund's rule and electron filling are consequently found to play a key role for a strong spin???orbit interaction important for topological insulators. The last subject is classification of topological crystalline insulators in the presence of electron correlation. Unlike non-interacting topological insulators, such two- and three-dimensional correlated insulators with mirror symmetry are demonstrated to be characterized, respectively, by the Z4 and Z8 group by using the bosonization technique and a geometrical consideration |

Title | Observation of Superconductivity in Epitaxially Grown Atomic Layers : In Situ Electrical Transport Measurements |
Author(s) | Ichinokura, Satoru |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2018. |
Description | XIX, 122 p. 50 illus., 42 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis presents first observations of superconductivity in one- or two-atomic-scale thin layer materials. The thesis begins with a historical overview of superconductivity and the electronic structure of two-dimensional materials, and mentions that these key ingredients lead to the possibility of the two-dimensional superconductor with high phase-transition temperature and critical magnetic field. Thereafter, the thesis moves its focus onto the implemented experiments, in which mainly two different materials thallium-deposited silicon surfaces and metal-intercalated bilayer graphenes, are used. The study of the first material is the first experimental demonstration of both a gigantic Rashba effect and superconductivity in the materials supposed to be superconductors without spatial inversion symmetry. The study of the latter material is relevant to superconductivity in a bilayer graphene, which was a big experimental challenge for a decade, and has been first achieved by the author. The description of the generic and innovative measurement technique, highly effective in probing electric resistivity of ultra-thin materials unstable in an ambient environment, makes this thesis a valuable source for researchers not only in surface physics but also in nano-materials science and other condensed-matter physics |

Title | Ordering Phenomena in Rare-Earth Nickelate Heterostructures |
Author(s) | Hepting, Matthias |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XVI, 147 p. 63 illus., 56 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis presents an experimental study of ordering phenomena in rare-earth nickelate-based heterostructures by means of inelastic Raman light scattering and elastic resonant x-ray scattering (RXS). Further, it demonstrates that the amplitude ratio of magnetic moments at neighboring nickel sites can be accurately determined by RXS in combination with a correlated double cluster model, and controlled experimentally through structural pinning of the oxygen positions in the crystal lattice. The two key outcomes of the thesis are: (a) demonstratingfull control over the charge/bond and spin order parameters in specifically designed praseodymium nickelate heterostructures and observation of a novel spin density wave phase in absence of the charge/bond order parameter, which confirms theoretical predictions of a spin density wave phase driven by spatial confinement of the conduction electrons; and (b) assessing the thickness-induced crossover between collinear and non-collinear spin structures in neodymium nickelate slabs, which is correctly predicted by drawing on density functional theory. |

Title | Perturbative and Non-perturbative Approaches to String Sigma-Models in AdS/CFT |
Author(s) | Vescovi, Edoardo |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XIII, 239 p. 32 illus., 18 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis introduces readers to the type II superstring theories in the AdS5??S5 and AdS4??CP3 backgrounds. Each chapter exemplifies a different computational approach to measuring observables (conformal dimensions of single-trace operators and expectation values of Wilson loop operators) relevant for two supersymmetric theories: the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and the N=6 Chern-Simons-matter (ABJM) theory.?? Perturbative techniques have traditionally been used to make quantitative predictions in quantum field theories, but they are only reliable as long as the interaction strengths are weak. The anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence realizes physicists??? dream of studying strongly coupled quantum field theories with ???enhanced??? symmetries, using the methods provided by string theory.?? The first part of the thesis sets up the semiclassical quantization of worldsheet sigma-model actions around string solutions of least area in AdS space. This machinery is used to capture quantum corrections at large coupling to next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order by solving the determinants of partial differential operators and by computing Feynman diagrams, respectively. In turn, the second part presents an innovative approach based on Monte Carlo simulations to finite coupling for a lattice-discretized model of the AdS5??S5 superstring action.?? The thesis focuses on fundamental aspects, as well as on applications previously published by the author, and offers a valuable reference work for anyone interested in the most recent developments in this field |

Title | Many-body Approaches at Different Scales : A Tribute to Norman H. March on the Occasion of his 90th Birthday |
Author(s) | Angilella, G.G.N;Amovilli, C |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XVIII, 385 p. 90 illus., 72 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents a collection of invited research and review contributions on recent advances in (mainly) theoretical condensed matter physics, theoretical chemistry, and theoretical physics. The volume celebrates the 90th birthday of N.H. March (Emeritus Professor, Oxford University, UK), a prominent figure in all of these fields. Given the broad range of interests in the research activity of Professor March, who collaborated with a number of eminent scientists in physics and chemistry, the volume embraces quite diverse topics in physics and chemistry, at various dimensions and energy scales. One thread connecting all these topics is correlation in aggregated states of matter, ranging from nuclear physics to molecules, clusters, disordered condensed phases such as the liquid state, and solid state physics, and the various phase transitions, both structural and electronic, occurring therein. A final chapter leaps to an even larger scale of matter aggregation, namely the universe and gravitation. A further no less important common thread is methodological, with the application of theoretical physics and chemistry, particularly density functional theory and statistical field theory, to both nuclear and condensed matter |

Title | Formulation of Statistical Mechanics Based on Thermal Pure Quantum States |
Author(s) | Sugiura, Sho |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2017. |
Description | XII, 73 p. 4 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis introduces the concept of "thermal pure quantum (TPQ) states", which are pure quantum states in equilibrium. The author establishes a new formulation of statistical mechanics based on the TPQ states. This formulation allows us to obtain not only mechanical variables but also thermodynamic variables such as entropy and free energy from a single TPQ state. Furthermore, the formulation provides a new physical description in which all fluctuations including thermally driven ones are uniquely identified to be quantum fluctuations. The use of TPQ formulation has practical advantages in its application to numerical computations and allows for significant reduction in computation cost in numerics. For demonstration purposes, a numerical computation based on TPQ formulation is applied to a frustrated two-dimensional quantum spin model, and the result is also included in this book. |

Title | The NMR Probe of High-Tc Materials and Correlated Electron Systems |
Author(s) | Walstedt, Russell E |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2018. |
Description | XIII, 323 p. 124 illus., 13 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This new edition updates readers in three areas of NMR studies, namely,??recent developments in high-Tc materials, heavy fermion systems and actinide oxides are presented. ??The NMR probe has yielded a vast array of data for solid state materials, corresponding to different compounds, ionic sites, and nuclear species, as well as to a wide variety of experimental conditions. The last two parts of the book are completely new in this??edition, while the first part has seen major updates. This??edition features the latest developments for high-Tc materials, especially the advances in the area of pseudogap studies are reviewed.?? An in depth overview of heavy fermion systems is presented in the second part,?? notably Kondo lattices, quantum critical points and unconventional superconductivity are areas of intense research recently and are covered extensively. Finally, valuable information from NMR studies with actinide oxides will be provided. Ongoing analysis and discussion of NMR data have resulted in a wealth of important insights into the physics of these exotic systems. The aims of this monograph are manifold. First, it reviews NMR methodology as it has been applied to the different studies. This is addressed to NMR practitioners and to physics laypersons alike. Next, it presents a review of NMR measurements and the wide variety of phenomena which they represent. The third phase is to recount the theoretical model calculations and other proposals which have been put forward to account for these data |
