Title | Time Machine Tales : The Science Fiction Adventures and Philosophical Puzzles of Time Travel |
Author(s) | Nahin, Paul J |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XLIX, 383 p. 53 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book contains a broad overview of time travel in science fiction, along with a detailed examination of the philosophical implications of time travel. The emphasis of this book is now on the philosophical and on science fiction, rather than on physics, as in the author's earlier books on the subject. In that spirit there are, for example, no Tech Notes filled with algebra, integrals, and differential equations, as there are in the first and second editions of TIME MACHINES. Writing about time travel is, today, a respectable business. It hasn???t always been so. After all, time travel, prima facie, appears to violate a fundamental law of nature; every effect has a cause, with the cause occurring before the effect. Time travel to the past, however, seems to allow, indeed to demand, backwards causation, with an effect (the time traveler emerging into the past as he exits from his time machine) occurring before its cause (the time traveler pushing the start button on his machine???s control panel to start his trip backward through time). Time Machine Tales includes new discussions of the advances by physicists and philosophers that have appeared since the publication of TIME MACHINES in 1999, examples of which are the chapters on time travel paradoxes. Those chapters have been brought up-to-date with the latest philosophical thinking on the paradoxes. Paul Nahin is THE authority on the intricate physics of time travel, paradoxes and all. He makes the field as clear as it can be. ??? Gregory Benford, author of Timescape |

Title | Exploring Quantum Foundations with Single Photons |
Author(s) | Ringbauer, Martin |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XVIII, 208 p. 68 illus., 52 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis uses high-precision single-photon experiments to shed new light on the role of reality, causality, and uncertainty in quantum mechanics. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the current understanding of quantum foundations and details three influential experiments that significantly advance our understanding of three core aspects of this problem. The first experiment demonstrates that the quantum wavefunction is part of objective reality, if there is any such reality in our world. The second experiment shows that quantum correlations cannot be explained in terms of cause and effect, even when considering superluminal influences between measurement outcomes. The final experiment in this thesis demonstrates a novel uncertainty relation for joint quantum measurements, where the textbook relation does not apply.?? |

Title | Galileo and the Equations of Motion |
Author(s) | Boccaletti, Dino |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XIV, 175 p. 26 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is intended as a historical and critical study on the origin of the equations of motion as established in Newton's Principia. The central question that it aims to answer is whether it is indeed correct to ascribe to Galileo the inertia principle and the law of falling bodies. In order to accomplish this task, the study begins by considering theories on the motion of bodies from classical antiquity, and especially those of Aristotle. The theories developed during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are then reviewed, with careful analysis of the contributions of, for example, the Merton and Parisian Schools and Galileo???s immediate predecessors, Tartaglia and Benedetti. Finally, Galileo???s work is examined in detail, starting from the early writings.?? Excerpts from individual works are presented, to allow the texts to speak for themselves, and then commented upon. The book provides historical evidence both for Galileo's dependence on his forerunners and for the major breakthroughs that he achieved. It will satisfy the curiosity of all who wish to know when and why certain laws have been credited to Galileo |

Title | Trick or Truth? : The Mysterious Connection Between Physics and Mathematics |
Author(s) | Aguirre, Anthony;Foster, Brendan;Merali, Zeeya |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | VIII, 250 p. 20 illus., 12 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The prize-winning essays in this book address the fascinating but sometimes uncomfortable relationship between physics and mathematics. Is mathematics merely another natural science? Or is it the result of human creativity? Does physics simply wear mathematics like a costume, or is math the lifeblood of physical reality? The nineteen wide-ranging, highly imaginative and often entertaining essays are enhanced versions of the prize-winning entries to the FQXi essay competition ???Trick or Truth???, which attracted over 200 submissions. The Foundational Questions Institute, FQXi, catalyzes, supports, and disseminates research on questions at the foundations of physics and cosmology, particularly new frontiers and innovative ideas integral to a deep understanding of reality, but unlikely to be supported by conventional funding sources |

Title | Information and Interaction : Eddington, Wheeler, and the Limits of Knowledge |
Author(s) | Durham, Ian T;Rickles, Dean |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XXIII, 212 p. 22 illus., 11 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this essay collection, leading physicists, philosophers, and historians attempt to fill the empty theoretical ground in the foundations of information and address the related question of the limits to our knowledge of the world. Over recent decades, our practical approach to information and its exploitation has radically outpaced our theoretical understanding - to such a degree that reflection on the foundations may seem futile. But it is exactly fields such as quantum information, which are shifting the boundaries of the physically possible, that make a foundational understanding of information increasingly important. One of the recurring themes of the book is the claim by Eddington and Wheeler that information involves interaction and putting agents or observers centre stage. Thus, physical reality, in their view, is shaped by the questions we choose to put to it and is built up from the information residing at its core. This is the root of Wheeler???s famous phrase ???it from bit.??? After reading the stimulating essays collected in this volume, readers will be in a good position to decide whether they agree with this view |

Title | The Development of Elementary Quantum Theory |
Author(s) | Capellmann, Herbert |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | VII, 98 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book traces the evolution of the ideas that eventually resulted in the elementary quantum theory in 1925/26. Further, it discusses the essential differences between the fundamental equations of Quantum Theory derived by Born and Jordan, logically comprising Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Optics, and the traditional view of the development of Quantum Mechanics. Drawing on original publications and letters written by the main protagonists of that time, it shows that Einstein???s contributions from 1905 to 1924 laid the essential foundations for the development of Quantum Theory. Einstein introduced quantization of the radiation field; Born added quantized mechanical behavior. In addition, Born recognized that Quantum Mechanics necessarily required Quantum Optics; his radical concept of truly discontinuous and statistical quantum transitions (???quantum leaps???) was directly based on Einstein???s physical concepts |

Title | The Principles of Quantum Theory, From Planck's Quanta to the Higgs Boson : The Nature of Quantum Reality and the Spirit of Copenhagen |
Author(s) | Plotnitsky, Arkady |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XXXIV, 313 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The book considers foundational thinking in quantum theory, focusing on the role the fundamental principles and principle thinking there, including thinking that leads to the invention of new principles, which is, the book contends, one of the ultimate achievements of theoretical thinking in physics and beyond. The focus on principles, prominent during the rise and in the immediate aftermath of quantum theory, has been uncommon in more recent discussions and debates concerning it. The book argues, however, that exploring the fundamental principles and principle thinking is exceptionally helpful in addressing the key issues at stake in quantum foundations and the seemingly interminable debates concerning them. Principle thinking led to major breakthroughs throughout the history of quantum theory, beginning with the old quantum theory and quantum mechanics, the first definitive quantum theory, which it remains within its proper (nonrelativistic) scope. It has, the book also argues, been equally important in quantum field theory, which has been the frontier of quantum theory for quite a while now, and more recently, in quantum information theory, where principle thinking was given new prominence. The approach allows the book to develop a new understanding of both the history and philosophy of quantum theory, from Planck???s quantum to the Higgs boson, and beyond, and of the thinking the key founding figures, such as Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Schr??dinger, and Dirac, as well as some among more recent theorists. The book also extensively considers the nature of quantum probability, and contains a new interpretation of quantum mechanics, ???the statistical Copenhagen interpretation.??? Overall, the book???s argument is guided by what Heisenberg called ???the spirit of Copenhagen,??? which is defined by three great divorces from the preceding foundational thinking in physics???reality from realism, probability from causality, and locality from relativity???and defined the fundamental principles of quantum theory accordingly |
