Abstract NoteThese proceedings highlight the fundamental researches and up-to-data developments on energy conversion and high-voltage application by means of low temperature and atmospheric pressure plasma. In recent years, plasma-assisted energy conversion gains increasing attention as an alternative to thermal-catalysis or electro-catalysis. These proceedings discuss and exchange cutting-edge scientific innovations and technological advances in fields like plasma-enabled synthesis of chemicals and fuels, plasma-enabled the environmental clean-up, plasma-enabled catalysis treatment, in-situ probing of plasma-catalyst interactions and its high-voltage applications, which show great potentials in industrial demands like CO2 hydrogenation, CH4 reforming and nitrogen fixation, plasma deposition, chemical synthesis, VOC abatement and high-voltage insulation. This collection of papers presents the main applications of plasma-induced energy conversion and high-voltage discharge in the form of separate chapters, including cutting-edge studies on conversion technology, complex mechanism simulation, in-situ detection and converged applications by artificial intelligence. These proceedings are suitable for researchers engaged in fields like plasma-catalysis, discharge diagnosis and modelling, chemical modelling and high-voltage applications. The major topics covered in the conference proceedings are: 1) Advanced plasma-catalysis conversion technology; 2) Advanced in-situ discharge diagnosis technology; 3) Advanced in-situ plasma-catalysis characterization; 4) Multi-scale or innovative modelling technology; 5) High-voltage discharge and application

TitleIntroduction to Laser-Plasma Interactions
Author(s)Michel, Pierre
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXIV, 416 p. 127 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics of laser-plasma interactions (LPI), based on a graduate course taught by the author. The emphasis is on high-energy-density physics (HEDP) and inertial confinement fusion (ICF), with a comprehensive description of the propagation, absorption, nonlinear effects and parametric instabilities of high energy lasers in plasmas. The recent demonstration of a burning plasma on the verge of nuclear fusion ignition at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California, has marked the beginning of a new era of ICF and fusion research. These new developments make LPI more relevant than ever, and the resulting influx of new scientists necessitates new pedagogical material on the subject. In contrast to the classical textbooks on LPI, this book provides a complete description of all wave-coupling instabilities in unmagnetized plasmas in the kinetic as well as fluid pictures, and includes a comprehensive description of the optical smoothing techniques used on high-power lasers and their impact on laser-plasma instabilities. It summarizes all the key developments from the 1970s to the present day in view of the current state of LPI and ICF research; it provides a derivation of the key LPI metrics and formulas from first principles, and connects the theory to experimental observables. With exercises and plenty of illustrations, this book is ideal as a textbook for a course on laser-plasma interactions or as a supplementary text for graduate introductory plasma physics course. Students and researchers will also find it to be an invaluable reference and self-study resource

TitleA Brief History of Nuclear Reactor Accidents : From Leipzig to Fukushima
Author(s)Marguet, Serge
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionLXXV, 414 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteAre you afraid of a nuclear reactor accident? Should you be? This book will arm you with the scientific knowledge necessary to make a rational and informed opinion on the subject, without having to be an expert in nuclear physics. Written so that a non-specialist can easily approach the highly technical aspects, it looks at all significant nuclear reactor accidents since the dawn of the Atomic Age and brings to light many crucial details that rarely, if ever, appear in the general media. Serge Marguet, an internationally renowned expert in reactor physics, breaks down the must-know technical aspects of numerous nuclear reactor accidents throughout history ??? both famous and unknown ??? from the first ever nuclear accident in Leipzig to the Chernobyl explosion and, finally, the Fukushima affair and its most recent developments. With many high-quality photographs and diagrams, this book is essential reading for anyone concerned about nuclear safety, curious about nuclear reactors, or simply interested in the history ??? and future ??? of nuclear power

TitleOur Climate and the Energy Problem : How our Energy Needs can be Covered in a Climate-Friendly Way
Author(s)Stierstadt, Klaus
PublicationWiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2022.
DescriptionX, 62 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis essential provides an overview of the changes in our climate, their causes and their consequences. Today, humanity's energy needs are largely met in ways that are harmful to the climate. The alternative to this, solar energy, would satisfy our needs thousands of times over. But this option is far too little used for mainly economic reasons. This essential discusses the energy converters that can be used to make solar energy available. Some other modern energy sources, such as nuclear power, are either inadequate, still utopian, or otherwise environmentally harmful. An outlook shows that our energy problem could easily be solved with economic reason by global use of solar energy. The climate could be stabilized in time This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Unser Klima und das Energieproblem by Klaus Stierstadt, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The content The climate - The energy demand - The sun - Solar energy converters -Non-solar energy sources The target groups Students of natural science, teachers of natural science subjects, people interested in climate and environment The author Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c.. Klaus Stierstadt is professor emeritus of physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich and author of several physics textbooks. He was a member of the board of the German Physical Society as well as vice president of the University of Munich and is honorary senator of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. His fields of work are radioactivity of the atmosphere, magnetism, phase transitions, neutron scattering and magnetohydrodynamics
