TitleTransmission Electron Microscopy : Physics of Image Formation and Microanalysis
Author(s)Reimer, Ludwig
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997.
DescriptionXVI, 587 p. 185 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteTransmission Electron Microscopy presents the theory of image and contrast formation, and the analytical modes in transmission electron microscopy. The principles of particle and wave optics of electrons are described. Electron-specimen interactions are discussed for evaluating the theory of scattering and phase contrast. Also discussed are the kinematical and dynamical theories of electron diffraction and their applications for crystal-structure analysis and imaging of lattices and their defects. X-ray micronanalysis and electron energy-loss spectroscopy are treated as analytical methods. Specimen damage and contamination by electron irradiation limits the resolution for biological and some inorganic specimens. This fourth edition includes discussion of recent progress, especially in the area of Schottky emission guns, convergent-beam electron diffraction, electron tomography, holography and the high resolution of crystal lattices

Author(s)Wilson, Raymond N
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXVIII, 557 p. 133 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume is concerned essentially with the modern developments in reflecting telescope optics. In the last twenty years, modern technology has revolutionized not only manufacturing and test procedures but also the whole area of quality specification with the introduction of active control into the functioning telescope. Other subjects covered here are alignment of telescope optics, atmospheric optics, including adaptive optics, reflecting coatings and ancillary equipment (adapters and baffles). Although an independent work, Vol. II is heavily cross-referenced with Vol. I. It is richly illustrated and gives, together with Vol. I, the most complete list of references available; it can also therefore be regarded as a source book

TitleNuclear Magnetic Resonance in Modern Technology
Author(s)Maciel, G.E
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXV, 606 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume represents the primary lectures of the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Modern Technology," which was held at Sarigerme Park (near the Dalaman Airport) on the southern Aegean shore of Turkey from August 23 to September 4, 1992. As indicated in the title, this ASI was aimed at examining, displaying, and perhaps influencing, the role of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in modern technological activity. The lectures summarized in this volume and the numerous short contributed talks and posters were primarily aimed at the question, "What is NMR doing in support of modern technology?" During the main discussion periods and the numerous small scheduled meetings of specific interest groups this same topic was also addressed, along with questions like, "What could or should NMR be doing in support of modern technology?" With this kind of subject orientation, the organizers attempted to include a large participation at the ASI from scientists and engineers from diverse private industries in which NMR does, or perhaps should, play a substantial role in supporting or optimizing technology. Perhaps because of a combination of worldwide industrial contractions and residual corporate nervousness regarding the then recent Gulf War (which caused a one-year postponement of this ASI), the participation from private industry was numerically disappointing. We hope that this book will serve to bring the role of NMR in modern industry to the attention of numerous industrial scientists and engineers who were unable to attend the AS!

TitleFrontiers of Particle Beams; Observation, Diagnosis and Correction : Proceedings of a Topical Course Held by the Joint US-CERN School on Particle Accelerators at Anacapri, Isola di Capri, Italy, October 20???26, 1988
Author(s)Month, Melvin;Turner, Stuart
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionIX, 510 p. 93 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume presents the latest ideas and developments in the world of beam diagnostics in particle accelerators and storage rings. It brings together papers by internationally recognized experts and by the younger scientists in the field. The lectures treat three main themes: - Phenomena used in beam observation - Single particle parameters - Collective parameters Each theme is introduced by one or more general lectures followed by detailed lectures on specific topics such as Schottky noise, closed orbits and impedance measurements. The overall aim was to show how to observe the diverse behavior of a beam, how to interpret and classify the observations and then how to control or correct the relevant parameters. The resulting volume contains much of the information needed to operate or commission a machine. The lecture program was supplemented by three seminars that looked at monitoring in e+e- colliders and at the special problems of nonplanar machines and experimental particle tracking. This unique and comprehensive collection of papers is the most up-to-date presently available

TitleLaboratory Manual for Nonlinear Physics with Maple for Scientists and Engineers
Author(s)Enns, Richard H;McGuire, George
PublicationBoston, MA, 1. Birkh??user Boston 2. Imprint: Birkh??user, 1997.
DescriptionXII, 136 p. 88 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteScience demands that all theory must be checked by experiment. Richard Feyn?? man, Nobel Laureate in physics (1965), reminds us in a wonderful quote that "The test of all knowledge is experiment. Experiment is the sole judge of sci?? entific truth. " 1 It is because nonlinear physics can be so profoundly counter?? intuitive that these laboratory investigations are so important. This manual is designed to be used with the text Nonlinear Physics with Maple for Scientists and Engineers. Understanding is enhanced when experiments are used to check so please attempt as many of the activities as you can. As you perform theory, these activities, we hope that you will be amazed and startled by strange behav?? ior, intrigued and terrorized by new ideas, and be able to amaze your friends as you relate your strange sightings! Remember that imagination is just as impor?? tant as knowledge, so exercise yours whenever possible. But please be careful, as nonlinear activities can be addicting, can provide fond memories, and can awaken an interest that lasts a lifetime. Although it has been said that a rose by any other name is still a rose, (with apologies to Shakespeare) the authors of this laboratory manual have, in an endeavor to encourage the use of these nonlinear investigations, called them experimental activities rather than experiments. A number of design innovations have been introduced: A

TitleQuantum Metrology and Fundamental Physical Constants
Author(s)Lucas, A.A;Cutler, Paul H;North, A
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionXII, 658 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe object of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was to pre?? sent a tutorial 'introduction both to the basic physics of recent spectacular advances achieved in the field of metrology and to the determination of fundamental physical constants. When humans began to qualify their description of natural phenomena, metrology, the science of measurement, developed along?? side geometry and mathematics. However, flam antiquity to modern times, the role of metrology was mostly restricted to the need of commercial, social or scientific transactions of local or at most national scope. Beginning with the Renaissance, and particularly in western Europe during the last century, metrology rapidly developed an international character as a result of growing needs for more accurate measurements and common standards in the emerging indus?? trial society. Although the concerns of metrology are deeply rooted to fundamental sciences, it was, until recently, perceived by much of the scientific community as mostly custodial in character
