TitleOptics and Lasers : An Engineering Physics Approach
Author(s)Young, M
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1977.
DescriptionXIV, 210 p. 14 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe field of optics has changed greatly in the past dozen years or so. Partly because of the applied or engineering nature of much of modern optics, there is need for a practical text that surveys the entire field. Such a book should not be a classical-optics text, but, rather, it should be strong on principles, applications and instrumentation, on lasers, holography and coherent light. On the other hand, it should concern itself relatively little with such admittedly interesting phenomena as the formation of the rainbow or the precise deter?? mination of the speed of light. My purpose, therefore, has been to write an up-to-date textbook that surveys applied or engineering optics, including lasers and certain other areas that might be called modern optics. I have attempted to treat each topic in sufficient depth to give it considerable engineering value, while keeping it as free of unnecessary mathematical detail as possible. Because I have surveyed applied optics in a very general way (including much more than I would attempt to incorporate into any single college course), this book should be a useful handbook for the practicing physicist or engineer who works from time to time with optics. Any of the material is appropriate to an introductory undergraduate course in optics; the work as a whole will be useful to the graduate student or applied scientist with scant background in optics

TitleDimensional Scaling in Chemical Physics
Author(s)Herschbach, D.R;Avery, John S;Goscinski, O
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionIV, 510 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDimensional scaling offers a new approach to quantum dynamical correlations. This is the first book dealing with dimensional scaling methods in the quantum theory of atoms and molecules. Appropriately, it is a multiauthor production, derived chiefly from papers presented at a workshop held in June 1991 at the ??rsted Institute in Copenhagen. Although focused on dimensional scaling, the volume includes contributions on other unorthodox methods for treating nonseparable dynamical problems and electronic correlation. In shaping the book, the editors serve three needs: an introductory tutorial for this still fledgling field; a guide to the literature; and an inventory of current research results and prospects. Part I treats basic aspects of dimensional scaling. Addressed to readers entirely unfamiliar with the subject, it provides both a qualitative overview, and a tour of elementary quantum mechanics. Part II surveys the research frontier. The eight chapters exemplify current techniques and outline results. Part III presents other methods, including nonseparable dynamics, and electron correlation in pseudomolecular excited states of atoms. Although procrustean conformity was not imposed, unifying and complementary themes are emphasized throughout the book

TitleThe General Theory of Alternating Current Machines : Application to Practical Problems
Author(s)Adkins, Bernard;Harley, Ronald G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1975.
DescriptionXVI, 279 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book on The General Theory of Electrical Machines, by B. Adkins, which was published in 1957, has been well received, as a manual containing the theories on which practical methods of calculating machine performance can be based, and as a text-book for advanced students. Since 1957, many important developments have taken place in the practical application of electrical machine theory. The most important single factor in the development has been the increasing availability of the digital computer, which was only beginning to be used in the solution of machine and power system problems in 1957. Since most of the recent development, particularly that with which the authors have been concerned, has related to a. c. machines, the present book, which is in other respects an up-to-date version of the earlier book, deals primarily with a. c. machines. The second chapter on the primitive machine does deal to some extent with the d. c. machine, because the cross-field d. c. generator servesas an introduction to the two-axis theory and can be used to provide a simple explanation of some of the mathematical methods. The equations also apply directly to a. c. commutator machines. The use of the word 'general' in the title has been criticized. It was never intended to imply that the treatment was comprehen?? sive in the sense that every possible type of machine and problem was dealt with

TitleLinear Prediction of Speech
Author(s)Markel, J.D;Gray, A.H. Jr
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1976.
DescriptionXII, 290 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDuring the past ten years a new area in speech processing, generally referred to as linear prediction, has evolved. As with all scientific research, results did not always get published in a logical order and terminology was not always con?? sistent. In mid-1974, we decided to begin an extra hours and weekends project of organizing the literature in linear prediction of speech and developing it into a unified presentation in terms of content and terminology. This effort was completed in November, 1975, with the contents presented herein. If there are two words which describe our goals in this book, they are unifica?? tion and depth. Considerable effort has been spent on showing the interrelation?? ships among various linear prediction formulations and solutions, and in develop?? ing extensions such as acoustic tube models and synthesis filter structures in a unified manner with consistent terminology. Topics are presented in such a manner that derivations and theoretical details are covered, along with Fortran sub?? routines and practical considerations. Using this approach we hope to have made the material useful for a wide range of backgrounds and interests
