Title | Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems : Volume 2: Astronomical Techniques, Software, and Data |
Author(s) | Bond, Howard E |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2013. |
Description | 38 illus. in color. eReference : online resource |
Abstract Note | This is volume 2 of Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems, a six-volume compendium of modern astronomical research, covering subjects of key interest to the main fields of contemporary astronomy. This volume on ???Astronomical Techniques, Software, and Data??? edited by Howard E. Bond presents accessible review chapters on Astronomical Photometry, Astronomical Spectroscopy, Infrared Astronomy Fundamentals, Astronomical Polarimetry: Polarized Views of Stars and Planets, Sky Surveys,Techniques of Radio Astronomy,Radio and Optical Interferometry: Basic Observing Techniques and Data Analysis, Absolute Calibration of Spectrophotometric Standard Stars,Virtual Observatories, Data Mining, and Astroinformatics, Statistical Methods for Astronomy, Numerical Techniques in Astrophysics . All chapters of the handbook were written by practicing professionals. They include sufficient background material and references to the current literature to allow readers to learn enough about a specialty within astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology to get started on their own practical research projects. In the spirit of the series Stars and Stellar Systems published by Chicago University Press in the 1960s and 1970s, each chapter of Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems can stand on its own as a fundamental review of its respective sub-discipline, and each volume can be used as a textbook or recommended reference work for advanced undergraduate or postgraduate courses. Advanced students and professional astronomers in their roles as both lecturers and researchers will welcome Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems as a comprehensive and pedagogical reference work on astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology |

Title | Econophysics Approaches to Large-Scale Business Data and Financial Crisis : Proceedings of Tokyo Tech-Hitotsubashi Interdisciplinary Conference + APFA7 |
Author(s) | Takayasu, Misako;Watanabe, Tsutomu;Takayasu, Hideki |
Publication | Tokyo, Springer Japan, 2010. |
Description | XI, 315 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In recent years, as part of the increasing ???informationization??? of industry and the economy, enterprises have been accumulating vast amounts of detailed data such as high-frequency transaction data in nancial markets and point-of-sale information onindividualitems in theretail sector. Similarly, vast amountsof data arenow ava- able on business networks based on inter rm transactions and shareholdings. In the past, these types of information were studied only by economists and management scholars. More recently, however, researchers from other elds, such as physics, mathematics, and information sciences, have become interested in this kind of data and, based on novel empirical approaches to searching for regularities and ???laws??? akin to those in the natural sciences, have produced intriguing results. This book is the proceedings of the international conference THICCAPFA7 that was titled ???New Approaches to the Analysis of Large-Scale Business and E- nomic Data,??? held in Tokyo, March 1???5, 2009. The letters THIC denote the Tokyo Tech (Tokyo Institute of Technology)???Hitotsubashi Interdisciplinary Conference. The conference series, titled APFA (Applications of Physics in Financial Analysis), focuses on the analysis of large-scale economic data. It has traditionally brought physicists and economists together to exchange viewpoints and experience (APFA1 in Dublin 1999, APFA2 in Liege ` 2000, APFA3 in London 2001, APFA4 in Warsaw 2003, APFA5 in Torino 2006, and APFA6 in Lisbon 2007). The aim of the conf- ence is to establish fundamental analytical techniques and data collection methods, taking into account the results from a variety of academic disciplines |

Title | Complexity in Financial Markets : Modeling Psychological Behavior in Agent-Based Models and Order Book Models |
Author(s) | Cristelli, Matthieu |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2014. |
Description | XIX, 216 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Tools and methods from complex systems science can have a considerable impact on the way in which the quantitative assessment of economic and financial issues is approached, as discussed in this thesis. First????it is shown??that the self-organization of financial markets is a crucial factor in the understanding of their dynamics. In fact, using an agent-based approach, it is argued that financial markets??? stylized facts appear only in the self-organized state. Secondly, the thesis points out the potential of so-called big data science for financial market modeling, investigating how web-driven data can??yield a picture of??market activities:?? it has been found that web query volumes anticipate trade volumes. As a third achievement, the metrics developed here??for country competitiveness and product complexity is groundbreaking in??comparison to mainstream theories of economic growth and technological development. A key element in assessing the intangible variables determining the success of countries in the present globalized economy is represented by the diversification of the productive basket of countries. The comparison between the level of complexity of a country's productive system?? and economic indicators such as the GDP per capita discloses its hidden growth potential |

Title | Self-Organizing Maps |
Author(s) | Kohonen, Teuvo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997. |
Description | XVII, 426 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Self-Organizing Maps deals with the most popular artificial neural-network algorithm of the unsupervised-learning category, viz. the Self-Organizing Map (SOM). As this book is the main monograph on the subject, it discusses all the relevant aspects ranging from the history, motivation, fundamentals, theory, variants, advances, and applications, to the hardware of SOMs. An extensive literature survey of over 2000 contemporary studies is included. Thus, answers to the most frequently asked questions relating to this topic can be found in this volume. The subject is presented in a didactive manner and only a general theoretical background is required. The reader will be guided by the many case studies to the very frontier of modern research in this area |
