PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionXVII, 436 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe planning for the IUTAM Symposium on Adiabatic Waves in Liquid-Vapor Systems began in May of 1986 in G5ttingen. The Symposium was held in August of 1989 in the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung. The invitations to participants suggested that the written papers concern Fast Adiabatic Phase Changes in Fluids and Related Phenomena. Particular topics suggested were: Liquefaction shockwaves and Shock splitting; Evaporation waves; Condensation in Laval nozzles and turbines; Stability in multiphase shocks; Non-equilibrium and near-critical phenomena; Nucleation in dynamic systems; Structure of transition layers; Acoustic phenomena in two?? phase systems and Cavitation waves. All of these topics should have been treated with emphasis on physical results, new phenomena and theoretical models. Participants from fourteen nations took part in the Symposium and presented papers which were within the range of suggested topics. The organization and execution of the Symposium was performed by the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung in G5ttingen. In particular, the meeting has been promoted under the leadership of Professor Dr. E.-A. MUller, who has for many years given his support for international exchanges in science. The detailed work of organization up to and during the Symposium was in large part due to Dr. T. Kowalewski, who served as Symposium Secretary

DescriptionVI, 472 p : online resource
Abstract Note343 Whilst this may be so it is also true that this in itself is not sufficient to deter?? mine it completely. In fact the extent of the dead air region and the behaviour of the shear layer are also of prime importance and in short a unified treatment comprising external flow, boundary layer, shear layer and dead air region becomes necessary to complete the investigation. This would take us outside the scope of the present article and for the substantial progress that has been made towards such a treatment the reader is referred to a paper by HOLDER and GADD 1 and its comprehensive list of references. v. Heat transfer in incompressible boundary layers. 25. Introduction. The term fluid includes gases and liquids. Both gases and liquids are to some extent compressible but in many problems of fluid flow the density changes occurring are small. When they are small enough to be negligible we can regard the flow as incompressible. In Chap. IV we have established the equations for compressible flow of gases and these can of course be used to deter?? mine when density changes in a gas flow are in fact negligible. Broadly speaking this will be so when the temperature changes as determined by the energy equation are small enough

TitleAerothermodynamics in Combustors : IUTAM Symposium Taipei, Taiwan, 1991
Author(s)Lee, Richard S.L;Whitelaw, James H;Wung, T.S
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionIX, 353 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA Symposium on Aerothermodynamics of Combustors was held at the Institute of Applied Mechanics of the National Taiwan University from 3 to 5 June 1991 and was attended by 130 delegates from eight countries. The topics of the forty formal presentations included measurements and calculations of isothermal simulations and of combusting flows with one and two phases, and with consideration of configurations ranging from simple diffusion to gas-turbine flows. The discussions inside and outside of the Symposium Hall were lively and an open forum session demonstrated the range of opinions currently and strongly held. The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics initiated the Symposium under the chairmanship of Professor R S L Lee and with the Scientific Committee listed below. It benefited from sponsorship, again as listed below, and from contributors who presented interesting and up-to-date descriptions of their research. Invited lectures were delivered by Professors R Bilger and F Weinberg and set the scene in terms of quality of material and presentation

TitleMagnetohydrodynamic Equilibrium and Stability of Stellarators
Author(s)Bauer, F;Betancourt, O;Garabedian, P
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1984.
DescriptionX, 196 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book, we describe in detail a numerical method to study the equilibrium and stability of a plasma confined by a strong magnetic field in toroidal geometry without two-dimensional symmetry. The principal appli?? cation is to stellarators, which are currently of interest in thermonuclear fusion research. Our mathematical model is based on the partial differential equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The main contribution is a computer code named BETA that is listed in the final chapter. This work is the natural continuation of an investigation that was presented in an early volume of the Springer Series in Computational Physics (cf. [3]). It has been supported over a period of years by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract DE-AC02-76ER03077 with New York University. We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Franz Herrnegger for the assistance he has given us with the preparation of the manuscript. We are especially indebted to Connie Engle for the high quality of the final typescript. New York F. BAUER October 1983 O. BETANCOURT P. GARABEDIAN Contents 1. Introduction 1 2. TitleWave Propagation in Solids and Fluids
Author(s)Davis, Julian L
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1988.
DescriptionX, 386 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe purpose of this volume is to present a clear and systematic account of the mathematical methods of wave phenomena in solids, gases, and water that will be readily accessible to physicists and engineers. The emphasis is on developing the necessary mathematical techniques, and on showing how these mathematical concepts can be effective in unifying the physics of wave propagation in a variety of physical settings: sound and shock waves in gases, water waves, and stress waves in solids. Nonlinear effects and asymptotic phenomena will be discussed. Wave propagation in continuous media (solid, liquid, or gas) has as its foundation the three basic conservation laws of physics: conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, which will be described in various sections of the book in their proper physical setting. These conservation laws are expressed either in the Lagrangian or the Eulerian representation depending on whether the boundaries are relatively fixed or moving. In any case, these laws of physics allow us to derive the "field equations" which are expressed as systems of partial differential equations. For wave propagation phenomena these equations are said to be "hyperbolic" and, in general, nonlinear in the sense of being "quasi linear" . We therefore attempt to determine the properties of a system of "quasi linear hyperbolic" partial differential equations which will allow us to calculate the displacement, velocity fields, etc

TitleComputational Techniques for Fluid Dynamics 1 : Fundamental and General Techniques
Author(s)Fletcher, Clive A.J
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988.
DescriptionXIV, 409 p. 17 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe purpose of this two-volume textbook is to provide students of engineer?? ing, science and applied mathematics with the specific techniques, and the framework to develop skill in using them, that have proven effective in the various branches of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Volume 1 de?? scribes both fundamental and general techniques that are relevant to all branches of fluid flow. Volume 2 provides specific techniques, applicable to the different categories of engineering flow behaviour, many of which are also appropriate to convective heat transfer. An underlying theme of the text ist that the competing formulations which are suitable for computational fluid dynamics, e.g. the finite differ?? ence, finite element, finite volume and spectral methods, are closely related and can be interpreted as part of a unified structure. Classroom experience indicates that this approach assists, considerably, the student in acquiring a deeper understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the alternative computational methods. Through the provision of 24 computer programs and associated exam?? ples and problems, the present text is also suitable for established research workers and practitioners who wish to acquire computational skills without the benefit of formal instruction. The text includes the most up-to-date techniques and is supported by more than 300 figures and 500 references
