Author(s)Li, Mi
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXIII, 135 p. 75 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents methodological and application research in detecting cellular and molecular biophysical properties based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanorobotics. Series methods for in situ label-free visualizing and quantifying the multiple physical properties of single cells and single molecules were developed, including immobilization strategies for observing fine structures of living cells, measurements of single-cell mechanics, force recognition of molecular interactions, and mapping protein organizations on cell surface. The biomedical applications of these methods in clinical lymphoma treatments were explored in detail, including primary sample preparation, cancer cell recognition, AFM detection and data analysis. Future directions about the biomedical applications of AFM are also given

TitleComplexity Perspectives on Language, Communication and Society
Author(s)Massip-Bonet, ??ngels;Bastardas-Boada, Albert
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXVI, 256 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe ???language-communication-society??? triangle defies traditional scientific approaches. Rather, it is a phenomenon that calls for an integration of complex, transdisciplinary perspectives, if we are to make any progress in understanding how it works. The highly diverse agents in play are not merely cognitive and/or cultural, but also emotional and behavioural in their specificity. Indeed, the effort may require building a theoretical and methodological body of knowledge that can effectively convey the characteristic properties of phenomena in human terms. New complexity approaches allow us to rethink our limited and mechanistic images of human societies and create more appropriate emo-cognitive dynamic and holistic models. We have to enter into dialogue with the complexity views coming out of other more ???material??? sciences, but we also need to take steps in the linguistic and psycho-sociological fields towards creating perspectives and concepts better fitted to human characteristics. Our understanding of complexity is different ??? but not opposed ??? to the one that is more commonly found in texts written by people working in physics or computer science, for example. The goal of this book is to extend the knowledge of these other more ???human??? or socially oriented perspectives on complexity, taking account of the language and communication singularities of human agents in society. ?? ??

TitleBiLBIQ: A Biologically Inspired Robot with Walking and Rolling Locomotion
Author(s)King, Ralf Simon
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXVIII, 86 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book ???BiLBIQ: A biologically inspired Robot with walking and rolling locomotion??? deals with implementing a locomotion behavior observed in the biological archetype Cebrennus villosus to a robot prototype whose structural design needs to be developed. ?? The biological sample is investigated as far as possible and compared to other evolutional solutions within the framework of nature???s inventions. Current achievements in robotics are examined and evaluated for their relation and relevance to the robot prototype in question. An overview of what is state of the art in actuation ensures the choice of the hardware available and most suitable for this project. Through a constant consideration of the achievement of two fundamentally different ways of locomotion with one and the same structure, a robot design is developed and constructed taking hardware constraints into account. The development of a special leg structure that needs to resemble and replace body elements of the biological archetype is a special challenge to be dealt with. Finally a robot prototype was achieved, which is able to walk and roll - inspired by the spider Cebrennus villosus. ??

TitleApplications of Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics in Engineering - Vol. 1
Author(s)Banerjee, Santo;Mitra, Mala;Rondoni, Lamberto
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2011.
DescriptionX, 350 p : online resource
Abstract NoteChaos and nonlinear dynamics initially developed as a new emergent field with its foundation in physics and applied mathematics. The highly generic, interdisciplinary quality of the insights gained in the last few decades has spawned myriad applications in almost all branches of science and technology???and even well beyond. Wherever quantitative modeling and analysis of complex, nonlinear phenomena is required, chaos theory and its methods can play a key role. ?? This volume concentrates on reviewing the most relevant contemporary applications of chaotic nonlinear systems as they apply to the various cutting-edge branches of engineering. The book covers the theory as applied to robotics, electronic and communication engineering (for example chaos synchronization and cryptography) as well as to civil and mechanical engineering, where its use in damage monitoring and control is explored). Featuring contributions from active and leading research groups, this collection is ideal both as a reference and as a ???recipe book??? full of tried and tested, successful engineering applications

TitleA Remote Integrated Testbed for Cooperating Objects
Author(s)Martinez-de Dios, Jose Ramiro;Jimenez-Gonzalez, Adrian;de San Bernabe, Alberto;Ollero, Anibal
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2014.
DescriptionXIII, 79 p. 31 illus., 28 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteTestbeds are gaining increasing relevance in research domains and also in industrial applications. However, very few books devoted to testbeds have been published. To the best of my knowledge no book on this topic has been published. This book is particularly interesting for the growing community of testbed developers. I believe the book is also very interesting for researchers in robot-WSN cooperation. This book provides detailed description of a system that can be considered the first testbed that allows full peer-to-peer interoperability between heterogeneous robots and ubiquitous systems such as Wireless Sensor Networks, camera networks and pervasive computing systems. The system architecture includes modules that allows full bidirectional communication between robots and WSN. One robot can The book describes the current state of the art in development of testbeds integrating Cooperating Object technologies. It describes in detail the testbed specification and design using requirements extracted from surveys among experts in robotics and ubiquitous systems in academia and industry. The book also describes the testbed novel architecture and its hardware and software components. Moreover, it includes details on user support tools to facilitate its use such as remote use using a virtual private network and sets of functionalities of interest for members from the robotics, WSN and robot-WSN communities. Finally, the book illustrates its capabilities and potentialities describing the implementation of some of the experiments that have been performed. Examples from the robotics, WSN and robot-WSN communities are described
