TitleWaves with Power-Law Attenuation
Author(s)Holm, Sverre
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXXXVII, 312 p. 142 illus., 82 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book integrates concepts from physical acoustics with those from linear viscoelasticity and fractional linear viscoelasticity. Compressional waves and shear waves in applications such as medical ultrasound, elastography, and sediment acoustics often follow power law attenuation and dispersion laws that cannot be described with classical viscous and relaxation models. This is accompanied by temporal power laws rather than the temporal exponential responses of classical models. The book starts by reformulating the classical models of acoustics in terms of standard models from linear elasticity. Then, non-classical loss models that follow power laws and which are expressed via convolution models and fractional derivatives are covered in depth. In addition, parallels are drawn to electromagnetic waves in complex dielectric media. The book also contains historical vignettes and important side notes about the validity of central questions. While addressed primarily to physicists and engineers working in the field of acoustics, this expert monograph will also be of interest to mathematicians, mathematical physicists, and geophysicists. Couples fractional derivatives and power laws and gives their multiple relaxation process interpretation Investigates causes of power law attenuation and dispersion such as interaction with hierarchical models of polymer chains and non-Newtonian viscosity Shows how fractional and multiple relaxation models are inherent in the grain shearing and extended Biot descriptions of sediment acoustics Contains historical vignettes and side notes about the formulation of some of the concepts discussed

TitleAcoustical Imaging
Author(s)Hua Lee
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2002.
DescriptionXIII, 409 p. 214 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe International Symposium of Acoustical Imaging has been widely recognized as the premier forum for presentations of advanced research results in both theoretical and experimental development. Held regularly since 1968, the symposium brings together th leading international researchers in the area of acoustical imaging. The 24 meeting is the third time Santa Barbara hosted this international conference and it is the first time the meeting was held on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. As many regular participants noticed over the years, this symposium has grown significantly in size due to the quality of the presentations as well as the organization itself. A few years ago multiple and poster sessions were introduced in order to accommodate this growth. In addition, the length of the presentations was shortened so more papers could be included in the sessions. During recent meetings there were discussions regarding the possibility of returning to the wonderful years when the symposium was organized in one single session with sufficient time to allow for in-depth presentation as well as discussions of each paper. And the size of the meeting was small enough that people were able to engage in serious technical interactions and all attendees would fit into one photograph. In light of the constraints of the limited budget with respect to the escalating costs it was not considered feasible

TitleShock Focussing Effect in Medical Science and Sonoluminescence
Author(s)Srivastava, Ramesh C;Leutloff, Dieter;Takayama, Kazuyashi;Gr??nig, Hans
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionX, 226 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn 1942 Guderley investigated the behaviour of the typical parameters near the axis when he was studying the focusing of cylindrical shock waves by solving the partial differential equations using the similarity method. He pre?? dicted an infinitely large pressure and temperature at the axis of convergence. Since then many theoretical and experimental studies have been performed on shock focusing as an energy source for the generation of very high pressures and temperatures. Many experimental investigations confirmed the idea of Guderley that at the centre of convergence extremely high pressures and temperatures can be obtained. At the Technical University of Darmstadt we performed a numerical exper?? iment to investigate the shock-focusing phenomenon, and many test problems were solved using the Rusanov scheme. At the centre of convergence we ob?? tained extremely high pressures and temperatures. The results of these inves?? tigations were compared with the experimental work done at the Max Planck Institute for Fluid Dynamics Research in Gottingen. The three-dimensional time-dependent shock wave which was created by a centred gas volume under high pressure interacts with the plane walls of the cavity and leads to a focusing effect after the explosion. The symmetry-preserving character of the invari?? ant difference scheme under use was proved numerically by calculation over a long interval of time. A test run of our investigation was also made at the Institute of Computational Fluid Dynamics in Tokyo, Japan

DescriptionXIII, 516 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book constitutes the Proceedings of the 26th Symposium on Acoustical Imaging held inWindsor, Ontario, Canada during September 9-12, 2001. This traditional scientific event is recognized as a premier forum for the presentation of advanced research results in both theoretical and experimental development. The lAIS was conceived at a 1967Acoustical Holography meeting in the USA. Since then, these traditional symposia provide an opportunity for specialists who are working in this area to make new acquaintances, renew old friendships and present recent results of their research. Our Symposium has grown significantly in size due to a broad interest in various topics and to the quality of the presentations. For the firsttime in 40 years, the IAIS was held in the province of Ontario in Windsor, Canada's Automotive Capital and City of Roses. The 26th IAIS attracted over 100specialists from 13countries representing this interdisciplinary field in physical acoustics, image processing, applied mathematics, solid-state physics, biology and medicine, industrial applications and quality control technologies. The 26th lAIS was organized in the traditional way with only one addition-a Special Session "History of Acoustical Imaging" with the involvement of such well known scientists as Andrew Briggs, Noriyoshi Chubachi, Robert Green Jr., Joie Jones, Kenneth Erikson, and Bernhard Tittmann. Many of these speakers are well known scientists in their fields and we would like to thank them for making this session extremely successful

TitleAcoustical Imaging : Volume 28
Author(s)Andr??, Michael P
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2007.
DescriptionXVI, 478 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe International Acoustical Imaging Symposium has been held continuously since 1968 as a unique forum for advanced research, promoting the sharing of technology, developments, methods and theory among all areas of acoustics. The interdisciplinary nature of the Symposium and the wide international participation are two of its main strengths. Scientists from around the world present their papers in an informal environment conducive to lively discussion and cross-fertilization. The fact that a loyal community of scientists has supported this Series since 1968 is evidence of its impact on the field. The Symposium Series continues to thrive in a busy calendar of scientific meetings without the infrastructure of a professional society. It does so because those who attend and those who rely on the Proceedings as a well-known reference work acknowledge its value. This Volume 28 of the Proceedings likewise contains an excellent collection of papers presented in six major categories, offering both a broad perspective on the state-of-the-art in the field as well as an in-depth look at its leading edge research. Audience: Researchers, industrial scientists, clinicians, graduate students interested in using acoustics for all aspects of imaging

TitlePhysics for Medical Imaging Applications
Author(s)Lemoigne, Yves;Caner, Alessandra;Rahal, Ghita
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2007.
DescriptionXIX, 385 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Nato Advanced Study Institute ASI 981171 was organised at the European Scientific Institute of Archamps (ESI , Archamps France) from October 26 to November 8, 2005. Everyy ear in autumn ESI organises the European School of Medical Physics, which covers a large spectrum of topics, ranging from Medical Imaging to Radiotherapy, over a period of five weeks. Thanks to the Cooperative Science and Technologys ub programme of th e NATO Science Division, the first two weeks were replaced this year by the ASI course dedicated to ???Optimising Detectors, Imaging & Computing Technologies from Nuclear Physics in General to Secur ity Applications???. This allowed the participation of experts and students fr om 20 different countries, with diverse cultural background and professional experience (Africa, America, Asia, and Europe). A further positive outcome of NATO ASI participation is the publication of this book, which contains the lectures series contributed by speakers during the ASI weeks. We hope it will be a reference book in Medical Imaging, addressing an audience of young medical physicists everywhere in the world, who are wishing to review the physics foundations of the relevant technologies, catch up with the state of the art and look ahead into future developments in their field. The ASI course was structured in two pa rts, defined by the use or absence of ionising radiation in the medical imaging techniques of interest
