Title | Gaseous Ion Mobility, Diffusion, and Reaction |
Author(s) | Viehland, Larry A |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XXXIII, 301 p. 97 illus., 49 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is about the drift, diffusion, and reaction of ions moving through gases under the influence of an external electric field, the gas temperature, and the number density. While this field was established late in the 19th century, experimental and theoretical studies of ion and electron swarms continue to be important in such varied fields as atomic and molecular physics, aeronomy and atmospheric chemistry, gaseous electronics, plasma processing, and laser physics. This book follows in the rigorous tradition of well-known older books on the subject, while at the same time providing a much-needed overview of modern developments with a focus on theory. Graduate students and researchers new to this field will find this book an indispensable guide, particularly those involved with ion mobility spectrometry and the use of ion transport coefficients to test and improve ab initio ion-neutral interaction potentials. Established researchers and academics will find in this book a modern companion to the classic references |

Title | Fano Resonances in Optics and Microwaves : Physics and Applications |
Author(s) | Kamenetskii, Eugene;Sadreev, Almas;Miroshnichenko, Andrey |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XXIII, 582 p. 259 illus., 206 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book discusses the development of Fano-based techniques and reveals the characteristic properties of various wave processes by studying interference phenomena. It explains that the interaction of discrete (localized) states with a continuum of propagation modes leads to Fano interference effects in transmission, and explores novel coherent effects such as bound states in the continuum accompanied by collapse of Fano resonance. Originating in atomic physics, Fano resonances have become one of the most appealing phenomena of wave scattering in optics, microwaves, and terahertz techniques. The generation of extremely strong and confined fields at a deep subwavelength scale, far beyond the diffraction limit, plays a central role in modern plasmonics, magnonics, and in photonic and metamaterial structures. Fano resonance effects take advantage of the coupling of these bound states with a continuum of radiative electromagnetic waves. With their unique physical properties and unusual combination of classical and quantum structures, Fano resonances have an application potential in a wide range of fields, from telecommunication to ultrasensitive biosensing, medical instrumentation and data storage. Including contributions by international experts and covering the essential aspects of Fano-resonance effects, including theory, modeling and design, proven and potential applications in practical devices, fabrication, characterization and measurement, this book enables readers to acquire the multifaceted understanding required for these multidisciplinary challenges |

Title | Measurement of the Antineutrino Double-Differential Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic Scattering Cross Section at MINERvA |
Author(s) | Patrick, Cheryl E |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XV, 341 p. 149 illus., 128 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis represents the first double differential measurement of quasi-elastic anti-neutrino scattering in the few GeV range--a region of substantial theoretical and experimental interest as it is the kinematic region where studies of charge-parity (CP) violation in the neutrino sector most require precise understanding of the differences between anti-neutrino and neutrino scatter. This dissertation also presents total antineutrino-scintillator quasi-elastic cross sections as a function of energy,??which is then compared to measurements from previous experiments.?? Next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments, such as DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande,??hope to measure CP violation in the lepton sector. In order to do this,??they must dramatically reduce their current levels of uncertainty, particularly those due to neutrino-nucleus interaction models. As CP violation is a measure of the difference??between the oscillation properties of neutrinos and antineutrinos, data about how the??less-studied antineutrinos interact is especially valuable. The measurement described herewith determines the nuclear and instrumental effects that must be understood to undertake precision neutrino physics.??As well as being useful??to help reduce oscillation experiments' uncertainty, this data can also be used to study??the prevalence of various correlation and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus. In addition to being a substantial scientific advance, this thesis also serves as an outstanding introduction to the field of experimental neutrino physics for future students |

Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | XXXVI, 431 p. 198 illus., 85 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides a comprehensive overview of the historical development of color science, told through the stories of more than 90 of the most prominent figures in the field and their contributions. The text comprises an extensive set of biographical essays about pioneering scientists, describing their most significant achievements and explaining how their findings influenced the general understanding of color. Grouped by historical period, each part is prefaced with a short introduction that sets the essays into context. Beginning with classical Greece and the works of Plato and Aristotle, the book goes on to describe the advances made by Islamic and European scholars between the 10th and 15th centuries. The subsequent part discusses color formation and visual perception from the 16th to 18th centuries, spanning the Age of Enlightenment. The final part of the book chronicles the most recent discoveries and contributions from pioneers born after 1800, and includes over 60 essays. Among these pioneers are Nobel laureates, vision scientists, and many other notable figures in contemporary color science. A useful reference for color scientists, science historians, artists, and others, Pioneers of Color Science offers a fascinating insight into the development of color science and the nature of scientific advancement |

Title | High Resolution Imaging, Spectroscopy and Nuclear Quantum Effects of Interfacial Water |
Author(s) | Guo, Jing |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2018. |
Description | XVIII, 115 p. 49 illus., 48 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis presents a series of experimental techniques based on scanning probe microscopy, which make it possible access the degree of freedom of protons both in real and energy space. These novel techniques and methods allow direct visualization of the concerted quantum tunneling of protons within the hydrogen-bonded network and quantification of the quantum component of a single hydrogen bond at a water???solid interface for the first time. Furthermore, the thesis demonstrates that the anharmonic quantum fluctuations of hydrogen nuclei further weaken the weak hydrogen bonds and strengthen the strong ones. However, this trend was reversed when the hydrogen bond coupled to the local environment. These pioneering findings substantially advance our understanding of the quantum nature of H bonds at the molecular level |

Title | DNA Systems Under Internal and External Forcing : An Exploration Using Coarse-Grained Modelling |
Author(s) | Engel, Megan Clare |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XV, 144 p. 70 illus., 67 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The interactions of DNA with force are central to manifold fields of inquiry, including the de novo design of DNA nanostructures, the use of DNA to probe the principles of biological self-assembly, and the operation of cellular nanomachines. This work presents a survey of three distinct ways coarse-grained simulations can help characterize these interactions. A non-equilibrium energy landscape reconstruction technique is validated for use with the oxDNA model and a practical framework to guide future applications is established. A novel method for calculating entropic forces in DNA molecules is outlined and contrasted with existing, flawed approaches. Finally, a joint experimental-simulation study of large DNA origami nanostructures under force sheds light on design principles and, through vivid illustrations, their unfolding process. This text provides an accessible and exciting launching point for any student interested in the computational study of DNA mechanics and force interactions |
