Title | The Blue Laser Diode : GaN Based Light Emitters and Lasers |
Author(s) | Nakamura, Shuji;Fasol, Gerhard |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997. |
Description | XVI, 343 p. 83 illus., 13 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Shuji Nakamura recently developed the first commercially available blue and green light emitting diodes. Subsequently he demonstrated the first blue semiconductor laser based on GaN. GaN and its related compounds allow the fabrication of highly efficient light emitters and lasers ranging from red through yellow and green to blue in a single material system. In this book the physical concept and basic manufacturing technology of these new blue light emitting diodes and laser diodes are discussed. The breakthrough in GaN technology opens many new commercial applications for semiconductors, comprising displays, road and railway signalling, lighting, scanners, optical data storage, and much more. This book also gives information on the extraordinary realization of an extremely successful concept of research and development through Nakamura's work. The book appeals to researchers as well as to engineers |

Title | Laser Interactions with Atoms, Solids and Plasmas |
Author(s) | More, Richard M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1994. |
Description | VIII, 476 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The aim of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was to bring together scientists and students working in the field of laser matter interactions in order to review and stimulate developmentoffundamental science with ultra-short pulse lasers. New techniques of pulse compression and colliding-pulse mode-locking have made possible the construction of lasers with pulse lengths in the femtosecond range. Such lasers are now in operation at several research laboratories in Europe and the United States. These laser facilities present a new and exciting research direction with both pure and applied science components. In this ASI the emphasis is on fundamental processes occurring in the interaction of short laser pulses with atoms, molecules, solids, and plasmas. In the case of laser-atom (molecule) interactions, high power lasers provide the first access to extreme high-intensity conditions above 10'8 Watts/em', a new frontier for nonlinear interaction of photons with atoms and molecules. New phenomena observed include multiphoton ionization processes, atomic collisions in the presence of a strong laser field, Coulomb explosion following rapid ionization of a molecule and the production of high harmonics of the laser source. Another important topic reviewed in this ASI is the lasercooling ofatoms |

Title | Autosolitons : A New Approach to Problems of Self-Organization and Turbulence |
Author(s) | Kerner, B.S;Osipov, V.V |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994. |
Description | XVI, 672 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This monograph is devoted to an entirely new branch of nonlinear physics - solitary intrinsic states, or autosolitons, which form in a broad class of physical, chemical and biological dissipative systems. Autosolitons are often observed as highly nonequilibrium regions in slightly nonequilibrium systems, in many ways resembling ball lightning which occurs in the atmosphere. We develop a new approach to problems of self-organization and turbulence, treating these phenomena as a result of spontaneous formation and subsequent evolution of autosolitons. Scenarios of self-organization involve sophisticated interactions between autosolitons, whereas turbulence is regarded as a pattern of autosolitons which appear and disappear at random in different parts of the system. This monograph is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive summary of the theory of autosolitons as developed by the authors over the years of research. The monograph is comprised of three more or less autonomous parts. Part I deals with the physical nature and experimental studies of autosolitons and self?? organization in various physical systems: semiconductor and gas plasma, heated gas mixture, semiconductor structures, composite superconductors, optical and magnetic media, systems with uniformly generated combustion matter, distributed gas-discharge and electronic systems. We discuss feasibility of autosolitons in the form of highly nonequilibrium regions in slightly nonequilibrium gases and semiconductors, "hot" and "cold" regions in semiconductor and gas plasmas, static, pulsating and traveling combustion fronts |

Title | Analysis and Simulation of Semiconductor Devices |
Author(s) | Selberherr, S |
Publication | Vienna, Springer Vienna, 1984. |
Description | XIV, 296 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The invention of semiconductor devices is a fairly recent one, considering classical time scales in human life. The bipolar transistor was announced in 1947, and the MOS transistor, in a practically usable manner, was demonstrated in 1960. From these beginnings the semiconductor device field has grown rapidly. The first integrated circuits, which contained just a few devices, became commercially available in the early 1960s. Immediately thereafter an evolution has taken place so that today, less than 25 years later, the manufacture of integrated circuits with over 400.000 devices per single chip is possible. Coincident with the growth in semiconductor device development, the literature concerning semiconductor device and technology issues has literally exploded. In the last decade about 50.000 papers have been published on these subjects. The advent of so called Very-Large-Scale-Integration (VLSI) has certainly revealed the need for a better understanding of basic device behavior. The miniaturization of the single transistor, which is the major prerequisite for VLSI, nearly led to a breakdown of the classical models of semiconductor devices |

Title | Coherent Control in Atoms, Molecules, and Semiconductors |
Author(s) | P??tz, Walter;Schroeder, W. Andreas |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999. |
Description | XI, 226 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The International Workshop on Coherent Control of Carrier Dynamics in Semiconductors was held May 19 to 22, 1998 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Its intent was to bring together an international and interdisciplinary group of scientists to discuss recent progress, pertinent problems, and open questions in the field of coherent control in atoms, molecules, and semiconductors, in particular. Twenty-seven scientists from the physical chemistry, quantum optics, semiconductor, electrical engineering, and laser communities accepted our invitation and made this event a meeting of exciting presentations and vivid discussions. This volume contains the proceedings of this workshop. Most speakers accepted our invitation to provide a manuscript either on specific aspects of their work or a brief review of their area of research. All manuscripts were reviewed. It is hoped that they provide not merely an overview of most of the issues covered during the workshop, but also represent an account of the current state of coherent control in general. Hence, it is hoped that they are also of interest to a large number of scientists active in one of the areas listed above. The organizers of this workshop would like to thank all the participants for making this meeting a complete success. We are particularly indebted to Dr. Larry R. Cooper at the U.S. Office of Naval Research and Dr |

Title | Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern Formation in Semiconductors and Devices : Proceedings of a Symposium Organized Along with the International Conference on Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern Formation in the Natural Environment Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, July 4???7, 1994 |
Author(s) | Niedernostheide, Franz-Josef |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XI, 265 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern Formation in Semiconductors and Devices is concerned with fundamental processes of self-organization and electrical instabilities to show the correlations between them. Leading experts give a survey of recent experimental observations concerning the spatiotemporal behaviour of dissipative structures in various semiconductor and present theoretical approches to problems of self-organization and the basic concepts of dynamical structures. To connect the field of semiconductor physics with the theory of nonequilibrium dissipative systems, the emphasis lies on the study of localized structures, their stability and bifurcation behaviour. A point of special interest is the evolution of dynamic structures and the investigation of more complex structures arising from interactions between these structures. Beyond that, possible applications of nonlinear effects and self-organization phenomena with respect to signal processing, sensors, and neural networks are discussed |

Title | The Physics of Submicron Lithography |
Author(s) | Valiev, Kamil A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1992. |
Description | XI, 493 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is devoted to the physics of electron-beam, ion-beam, optical, and x-ray lithography. The need for this book results from the following considerations. The astonishing achievements in microelectronics are in large part connected with successfully applying the relatively new technology of processing (changing the prop?? erties of) a material into a device whose component dimensions are submicron, called photolithography. In this method the device is imaged as a pattern on a metal film that has been deposited onto a transparent substrate and by means of a broad stream of light is transferred to a semiconductor wafer within which the physical structure of the devices and the integrated circuit connections are formed layer by layer. The smallest dimensions of the device components are limited by the diffraction of the light when the pattern is transferred and are approximately the same as the wavelength of the light. Photolithography by light having a wavelength of A ~ 0.4 flm has made it possible to serially produce integrated circuits having devices whose minimal size is 2-3 flm in the 4 pattern and having 10-105 transistors per circuit |
